  • Serbian High School Players in US

Have been following a few Serbian ball players in the US, heard of a kid named Nemanja Jacimovic who is supposed to have some game, anyone have any info on him or others?

There are a lot in Canada as well. I know this one player Nemanja Stankovic, he played High school ball in Toronto and now plays for Chicago state.

Nikola Dragovic (UCLA), Luka Drca (Utah) are for me the best serbian players in NCAA. I expect Dragovic to be starter this year. The same for Drca.
Two freshmen, Luka Mirkovic and Ilija Milutinovic can have solid NCAA careers.

About Jacimovic I think he was playing in a team in Novi Sad (not a pro one, only a team with young players U16 or U18 I think.

In the 2009 senior class, three serbian high-school players already commit to NCAA teams.

        Milos Kleut
(PF/C, 208, 1989) from North Cobb Christian in Kennesaw (Georgia) will join Lipscomb University.

Sasa Borovnjak (a versatile forward, 205) from Veritas Christian Academy in Fletcher (North Carolina) will join Penn State

Nikola Cicic (G, 194) from Rise Academy in Philadelphia, will join Arkansas-Little Rock.

There is also some talent american players from serbian descents such as Nick Markovich (PG) from Basha HS in Chandler (Arizona) or Peter Rakocevic (C 210) from St. Laurence HS in Burbank (Illinois).

The 2010 class is also very talented, especially Aleksandar Nikolic (PF/C 208 1991) from DuPont Manual in Louisville (Kentucky) who began to pratice basketball 3 years ago, Petar Todorovic (SG 194) from Wheeler HS in Valparaiso (Indiana) and one of the best players in Illinois Alex Dragicevich (SF 200) from Glenbrook North in Northbrook.

On your opinion, who of all these serbian young players does have the most chances to become the european star in the future? Thanks

It's hard to answer to this question. I think we will able to evaluate better all these players when they will play in NCAA.

Two month ago, the only player I have heard about in this list was Milos Kleut. In 2006, he was called for under 18 national team preliminary try outs. Then he left Serbia. He is a post player, funny to watch playing because his moves are very "mechanic", but he is talented.

Sasa Borovnjak also leave Serbia two years ago. He can play both forward position and can score inside and out. He has a very nice footwork because when he was younger he was playing guard. But at fifteen, he grew up suddenly. Often compared to Goran Suton. Bulk his body since he is in the US.

#43 in this video (full game) he played well against NBA prospect Al-Farouq Aminu.

Aleksandar Nikolic is a probably the most intriguing player in the list. His fast improvement starts to generate some chatter in USA and in Serbia too. Actually he is considered to be the 2nd best center in Kentucky (the 22nd in the whole US) for the 2010 class. He is still junior, so he has to play one more year in HS before joining NCAA. He started to play basketball three years ago, previously he was playing volley-ball in Serbia.

Alex Dragicevich is a sensational shot-maker, a Kapono like player. Offensively, he will be efficient in NCAA easily. But lack of footspeed may prevent him to play at the highest level (NBA). He is american from serbian descent. Such as Peter Rakocevic and Nick Markovich. Both are good players at HS level, but NCAA level is maybe the limit for them.

Nikola Cicic is totally unknow to me. The only thing I know is that his father is coach in Serbia.

            Petar Todorovic
, still HS junior, is also a good shooter (rank 7th SG in Indiana 2010 class), his family left Serbia for the USA eleven years ago.

The 4 first players seems to be able to play pro later.

We also have many talented kids in canadian high schools too. The most famous is Stefan Nastic (C 211 1992) who was member of serbian U16 national team last summer. But there is also some unknow talents such as Dejan Kravic (PF 208 1990), Srdjan Pejicic (SG 197 1991), Nikola Manojlovic (C 207 1991), Sasa Malic (SG 194 1991) and Stefan Cvrkalj (G 191 1992). All are among best players in their teams and in Ontaria HS league.

Kravic is probably the best prospect in this list, he is a skinny PF with guard skills, very athletic indeed, with an amazing jumping leap for a white guy and with 3pts range. He has to gain some weight. But his potential is real. Unfortunately most of them will play next year in Canadian Universitary championship and not in NCAA although they received some offers.

Srdjan Pejicic is also an interesting prospect (didnt decide yet where he will commit but he had NCAA offer from Rutgers).

Albion Gate, thanks for your description. Serbia like always is №1 in their constant production of new talents, even if some of these youngsters from time to time grow up abroad.

Borovnjak Signs With NIT Champion, Penn State - Apr 27, 2009 (by Eurobasket )

6'9' Serbian forward, Sasa Borovnjak (6'9''-F) signed a National Letter of Intent to accept a basketball scholarship to Penn St., a member of the Big Ten Conference. The Belgrade native has been attending Veritas Christian Academy in Fletcher, NC for the last two years of his high school career. This year, Borovnjak averaged 26.1 ppg and 12.1 rbpg in leading the Warriors to a 6th place national finish in the NACA Division I National High School Championships. Borovnjak went for over 30 points 11 times this season including a 33 point 15 rebound performance against Oak Hill Academy who featured 6'11' Syracuse bound, Moussa Keita and 6'10' Oklahoma bound, Tiny Gallon. Borovnjak was one of three Veritas senior players who signed with NCAA Divison I schools. 6'10' center, Andrew Kyles will be attending the Citadel while 6'7' Colin Sekal will suit up for Wagner College. Borovnjak was also recruited by NC State, Marquette, College of Charleston, Wake Forest and several other top college programs.

Veritas head coach, John Jordan who has a long history of developing European players on the American high school level, then sending them to top American colleges, feels Borovnjak has the potential to step in and play immediately for the Nittany Lions who were this year's NIT Champions. 'Sasa is a thinking 4 man who can make plays. He can score in many different ways both with his back to the basket as well as facing the rim. He also sees the floor extremely well and has a knack for finding the open man. We felt Sasa fit the style that Coach DeChellis (Penn State Head Coach) likes to run. We also feel that based on his returning personnel, Sasa has a chance to step in and contribute as a freshman. Sasa has a dream to play professional ball like his brother (Dejan Borovnjak) once he earns his college degree, we felt the Big Ten conference would prepare him for that as well any conference in the country.' Said Jordan. Borovnjak represents the second European post in as many years to come out of the Veritas program. 7'2' Romanian, Catalin Baciu (7'2''-C-88) was a 2008 graduate of the program and just finished his freshman campaign at Clemson of the ACC.

As far as I know, Sasa is 20 years old, so he is eligible to play for Serbian U20 national team next summer. I hope Slobodan Klipa will select him in serbian U20 national team preliminary list in order to evaluate him better during the try outs.

Before moving to USA, he was playing for FMP, Partizan and Atlas in serbian youth championships.

Serbian prospect Dejan Kravic [PF 208 1990] commit to York University and will play next year in CIS league (CSI is canadian equivalent of NCAA league). Kravic turned down a NCAA offer from Cornell University.

“We are extremely excited about Dejan’s commitment to play at York next year,” said head coach Bob Bain. “He is a highly-skilled big man with many guard-like skills including the ability to hit the three-point shot. He will be a huge part of our program for years to come because he can help us in so many different ways.”

Dejan Kravic, a 6-foot-10 power forward from Westminster Secondary in London, is also one of the top graduating high school players in the province
"He's a highly skilled big man," Bain said of Kravic. "We got lucky and are very excited that he's picked York."

Stefan Kovacevic from Skokie (IL) has recieved an invitation from the national team of Montenegro. He has interest from Miami, Yale, Harvard, Columbia, Dartmouth, Valpariso, and several other schools. I'm not sure if he is techinically allowed to play for Serbia though.

I know him, as myself, he is serbian from Montenegro. He's got an invitation from Montenegrin U18 national team. Stefan is born in 1992 in Niksic, his family moved to USA in 1995. He has never play for any montenegrin youth national team, so he is still eligible for serbian national. Don't know if he already possess serbian citizenship. Stefan (SG, 192, junior class) plays for Niles West HS in the same league as Alex Dragicevich. Dragicevich was named best player in this league, while Kovacevic was elected best newcomer

                              May 27, 2009

Class of 2010 Glenbrook North star Alex Dragicevich of Full Package Athletics, a fierce competitor on the basketball court, is continuing to showcase his versatility, and continues to solidify his standing as one of the top 2010 basketball prospects in the state of Illinois.

Dragicevich, a 6'7" guard, has long been known for his ability to drop shots with range and accuracy. He is coming off of a stellar junior year which saw him average better than 20 points and 6 rebounds per contest en route to being named Player of the Year in the Central Suburban League North Division.

Dragicevich put his skills on full display in a match-up against a loaded SYF team at the Adidas May Classic. Dragicevich, who is playing the 1,2 and 3 slots on the floor, and scored 30 points in a narrow loss.

Dragicevich impressed earlier this spring while running with the Illinois Wolves, and was a driving force to their run to the 17-U title game against the Illinois Warriors at the Nike Spring Showdown In Indiana presented by ChicagoHoops.com.

Steve Pratt of Full Package Athletics said, "Alex Dragicevich is a no-brainer high-major player, and we are ecstatic to have him as a part of the program."

Dragicevich, who figures to be a very popular attraction during the July Evaluation Period, already has scholarship offers from Utah and Colorado, and has the likes of Wake Forest, Xavier and a long line of other programs actively involved in his recruitment.

Dragicevich, and his Full Package teammates will be on display at the loaded Chicago Summer Classic July 9-11 in Deerfield, Illinois.
