  • 2021 FIBA 3x3 U18 World Cup (Aug 24-29, Hungary)

    Tournament website: http://www.fiba.basketball/3x3U18WorldCup/2021

    Men
Pool A: Kazakhstan, Brazil, France, Indonesia, Ukraine
Pool B: Russia, Dominican Republic, Lithuania, Hungary, Mongolia
Pool C: Egypt, Belarus, Germany, Romania, Israel
Pool D: Estonia, Latvia, Slovenia, Sri Lanka, United States

    Women
Pool A: Egypt, Netherlands, Ukraine, Spain, Romania
Pool B: Russia, Belarus, Mongolia, Slovenia, United States
Pool C: Germany, Latvia, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Israel
Pool D: France, Estonia, Hungary, Switzerland

Apparently Egypt is the #1 ranked team in the women's tournament. The US, having won four of the last six tournaments and finished runner-up in the other two, is seeded #18 of the 19 teams.

    US teams:

Playing for the U.S. men will be: Eric Dailey Jr. (IMG Academy/Tampa, Fla.), Gradey Dick (Sunrise Christian Academy/Wichita, Kan.), Kyle Filipowski (Wilbraham & Monson Academy, Mass./Slate Hill, N.Y.) and Keyonte George (iSchool of Lewisville/Lewisville, Texas).

The U.S. women’s team features: Janiah Barker (Tampa Bay Tech H.S., Fla./Marietta, Ga.), Ayanna Patterson (Homestead H.S./Fort Wayne, Ind.), Kiki Rice (Sidwell Friends School/Bethesda, Md.) and Mikaylah Williams (Parkway H.S./Bossier City, La.).

Astute readers of this forum may remember that Dick, Filipowski, and Rice all played in the inaugural Jr. NBA championship a few years ago.

Ukraine, Lithuania, Belarus, Egypt, and the US are 2-0 in the men's competition after two days. US had to overturn 14-9 and 15-11 deficits to beat Estonia 21-17 and then downed Slovenia 21-13. Lithuania edged Russia 20-19, and then the Russians beat the Dominican Republic 22-21 in overtime after trailing 19-15. Egypt has some imposing-looking guys but I don't know how strong their group is.

Spain, Netherlands, US and Germany are 2-0 in the women's tournament. Hungary and Estonia are 1-0 after their group was reduced to only three teams; I don't know why FIBA didn't redistribute the groups.

Neither French team made it to the tournament, a big loss, and also the Sri Lanka men are not playing.

      Quarterfinal Pairings

      Men
      Ukraine-Belarus
      USA-Lithuania
      Dominican Republic-Estonia
      Egypt-Kazakhstan

DR beat Lithuania 22-20 and Russia fell to Mongolia, so the DR and Lithuania advanced.

      Women
      Spain-Latvia
      Hungary-Russia
      USA-Estonia
      Germany-Ukraine

Russia made four free throws in the last eight seconds to beat the US 20-17 in the last group game, which allowed them to tie Belarus on the total points tiebreaker and advance on the "higher world ranking" tiebreaker, which seems pretty unfair since Belarus beat them 22-9 in their matchup. I think the top half of the bracket is tougher, Spain has a strong team with players from their U19 NT.

        Quarterfinals

        Men
        Belarus 21 Ukraine 14
        United States 21 Lithuania 13
        Estonia 21 Dominican Republic 13
        Egypt 21 Kazakhstan 16

Starting to look like the US and Estonia, who met in the first game of group play, are the two best teams.

        Women
        Spain 21 Latvia 11
        Hungary 21 Russia 18
        United States 18 Estonia 4
        Germany 13 Ukraine 10

US definitely got the weaker side of this bracket.

Those games between Russia, Lithuania and the Dominican Republic were all nail biters. The Russian team was in the stands watching the game between the Dominican Republic and Lithuania. It looked to me as if they were cheering for the Dominican Republic since at the time they still had hopes of finishing first on the basis of a tie breaker..

Overall though the game scores don't lie. I watched many of those games on Youtube and the U.S. team was easily the class of the Tournament. The American players seemed to be physically stronger than their opponents. And the Americans got better as the Tournament progressed.

But I believe Belarus emerged with the Bronze by virtue of a lucky draw.
