  • the only silver lining about Chua's looming SBP takeover is that unlike vargas and panlilio, he is somehow able to let by gones be by gones ala vince mcmahon as long as you make him money/keep his teams winning. Case of point, Calvin Abueva. But, he did put Slaughter in the doghouse and is a card carrying member of BCAP so that's a red flag

Prefacing this with a warning that this is a long post:

Could not understand, in every angle, why ASP (Panlilio) would do this. Damage control? He actually damaged the SBP's image further. Finding a scapegoat? Most likely - they've been feeling the heat and the brunt the past couple of months already and can't seem to find a logical answer to all the blame thrown their way. Frustration for being pilloried? Absolutely - especially since they feel Tab should get part of the blame and he comes out the victim in all these.

But let's set aside these emotional sentiments from the SBP President but instead, focus on the content in order to find logic in his reasoning. First, he blamed Tab for opting out for the February qualifiers. I'll give Panlilio that, I don't think he has any reason to lie about this. He speculated that this decision may have been borne out of the non-availability of the players and that he may not be able to perform as creditably in the FIBA-Asia Cup qualifiers where Gilas beat South Korea twice. But given the situation that Baldwin was in, which coach would want to handle that? Wasn't it the responsibility of the SBP to ensure the availability of the players, just like what they're doing now through a summit this August? Most of the Gilas players that beat SK were either in the collegiate ranks (Kouame, Belangel, Tamayo, Baltazar, Abarrientos), in the foreign leagues (Sotto, Ramos, Heading), or were drafted by the PBA (Navarro, Nieto, Tungcab, Go). Shouldn't the SBP talk to the other basketball stakeholders and allow them to suit up? Or was it because the players who were available were at TNT or NLEX or Meralco?

The last item was the only option remaining. Given that Baldwin has no control over the PBA players, it was only logical that he opted out and pass the rein, even temporarily, to someone who knows them better. Which was why he suggested Chot Reyes. Speaking of which, Panlilio mentioned that it was Baldwin who recommended Chot. Of course, given the only recourse that time was to field professional players and Reyes had at least 15 players at TNT to select from, and another 30 from NLEX and Meralco. So does that mean if Chot succeeded, Tab should also take credit for recommending him?

We understand that the FIBA schedule makes it extremely difficult to be flexible. But it wasn't like the schedule was drawn up at the moment and planning cannot be done. The SBP had a year to work out the calendar to ensure constant player availability. That wasn't Tab's job. If the SBP is moving mountains today in trying to convince the other leagues to unite for the WC and make the players available, why wasn't this done earlier?

Panlilio also somewhat downplayed Tab's accomplishment by comparing his situation with Chot. Tab had 3 months inside the bubble to train the Gilas players, making them ready to compete internationally. Chot didn't have the same luxury. But didn't we know this since 1990 - that we didn't have the best team in Asia anymore and for us to become one, we need longer time and preparation? What did they exactly do? How come the pickup system is back? Was that Tab's fault again?

Panlilio may not have gone out directly by accusing Tab of allowing the Gilas players to suit up elsewhere and not stopping them to play in international leagues. But when Tab was removed, that was one of the reasons cited. But what exactly can Baldwin do when players are given contracts three times as much as what the max player in the PBA is earning? Even the PBA couldn't stop the talent drain. No amount of moral persuasion from Tab would've stopped these players from earning more overseas. Belangel, Baldwin's top player at Ateneo, passed up on a couple more years to play for the Eagles in the UAAP to turn pro in SK and receive a lucrative package. Baldwin couldn't (and wisely didn't) stop him. Kiefer Ravena, who's earning the max at the PBA, couldn't be re-signed by his mother team, NLEX, an MVP team, because of a similar reason. In other words, you can't blame anybody for talents leaving overseas.

When Baldwin mentioned he wanted to focus more on Ateneo for that particular qualifiers, given his outstanding performance in the FIBA-Asia Cup qualifiers, shouldn't it be more prudent on the SBP's part to allow another coach to take over temporarily in the windows? They did this in the first qualifiers, allowing Jong Uichico to coach. Why was he booted out? Results have shown that Baldwin was the most qualified coach to handle the team in the WC - why didn't he get some latitude to not coach a particular window and instead, given the pink slip (or forced to resign)? And now that when the players were available in the qualifiers and in the FIBA Asia Cup, shouldn't he been given the decision to coach that team or not?

Let's assume that Tab coached in the qualifiers instead of Chot, without the players he wanted. Presumably, the team would not have performed just as well as the first time. There'll be criticisms, of course, but without the players, what should we expect? The brunt of the criticism would therefore fall on the SBP for not being able to give Tab the players he needed.

And that's the crux of the matter. Panlilio is correct that Chot shouldn't be blamed (entirely) for Gilas' debacle (although the SEAG loss was definitely on Chot). Instead, the blame should be placed squarely on the SBP. And that should have been the content of that press conference - for Panlilio to be accountable for the debacles we've had the past couple of months for not being able to prepare well. He can protect Chot, and he may be partially right to say that he had to make that sacrifice. But to pin the blame on Tab as the reason for these losses?

Fans are angry not just because we're losing, but losing bad. Fans are angry because the players aren't available which is why even the PBA is being blamed as well. Fans are angry because the SEAG is our domain, and there was no reason for us to lose the gold medal to Indonesia, which wasn't even the host team, despite having the top PBA players around. Fans are angry because despite all these losses, no one is manning up, and no one is resigning or having his resignation accepted (which is worse). Yeng Guiao didn't do well in the 2019 World Cup and the 2018 Asian Games, but why are fans more forgiving? Yeng's situation was no different from Chot's today.

Because Yeng took accountability, he resigned publicly, apologized publicly, and didn't give any excuses. Two, because we all knew that Yeng also didn't have the same preparation time needed to whip up a competitive squad. He met Jordan Clarkson for the first time when the tournament was already underway in the Asian Games. Chot had the same misfortune, but because Chot himself was the one justifying the debacles (Yeng opted not to offer any excuses), he didn't get the same treatment as Yeng.

if that interview was designed to do damage control, it only made worse. I don't know who are handling the PR work for the SBP, but it would have been a far better approach if Panlilio:

1). Apologized, sought forgiveness from the basketball fans, take the blame as head of the SBP.

2). Explained why they had to retain Chot and why they couldn't ask Tab to coach Gilas anymore.

3). Committed to everyone that they will propose a workable schedule with all basketball stakeholders and allow a pool of players from the PBA, the international leagues (with limitations since the SBP has no control on them) and the collegiate leagues, to be formed and prepare full-time for six straight months prior to the WC.

4). Acknowledged Tab's contribution to their initial success and consider him to serve as consultant / assistant coach alongside Cone, Vucinic, Uichico and Monteverde.

5). Worked out a way to have Clarkson or Kouame play as a local so that both can suit up for Gilas.

Then, perhaps, the damage control would have been better....

Not really. He is an employee of Salim. Panlilio seems to be his heir-apparent as chair of the Salim (not MVP) group of companies here. It is not surprising that he is also the head of SBP. But while MVP seems to be a purveyor of meritocracy, having worked outside the country, Panlilio seems to be more comfortable with the local palakasan system.

Another accusation. You said Kobe was taken out of U16 because of the kid. When infact Kobe chose to represent U18 in Fiba 3x3. Stop the lies

                    • Bolick played but Slaughter will not be be allowed by SMC. The others already wants to be in PBA, if not why will just stay like Navarro. Choosing PBA means no Gilas stint for a peroid. Javi GDL, was nursing injury and Kobe will not play for Gilas. Kiefer had Covid situation.

How did you even think those players will play.
