  • The tiger... Hunter of all!

    Tigers…

Explosively powerful with superior weaponary for killing and fighting… With greater aggression and ferocity… With far superior killing style… With far more agile and possesses the most lethal combination of size, strength, power, speed, explosiveness and agility that’s perfectly designed for routinely attacking and dispatching large, formidable animals that are 7 times it’s own weight.

Tiger means death itself as the sole purpose of their life is to kill the prey, large prey, and they do it all alone. Added with this fact tiger has got more weight, size and bite power which make them nearly a perfect killing machine making it nearly impossible for any animal to win against them in a fight.

A tiger, as a typical loner, has to have eyes in the back of it’s head and in case of a confrontation with an enemy, an instant reaction (an attack or defense) and cruelity as well as being larger than all other wild big cats, are it’s strongest weapon.

When it comes to strength and cleverness, the tiger is far ahead of other big cats. Many instances were recorded where tiger was found hunting down the animal far greater in strength than itself:
*Tigress (called Machli, in India) killed a full grown crocodile. (Nearly 500 kg and 5.5 metres.)
*Tiger killed gaur. (Largest cattle in the wild up to 1000 kg.)
*Tigers were found to kill bears. (Lots of documented cases, especially in India and Russia.)

Tigers like one man army. They have learned survival tactics to feed and fight on their own. For them it’s like better be dead than injured. With 1050 per square inch bite force (which crushes a buffalo’s windpipe), a tiger not only have strong jaws but also very sharp teeth, when hunting very large prey, tigers prefer to bite the throat until the prey dies of strangulation. Tigers have the strongest bite among big cats and rankes second among carnivorous mammals.

When fighting, all tigers stand on their hind legs and use both front paws and massive front arms, therefore sizing eachother up and swinging with well thought moves to rip eachothers faces… Keep in mind that, when it comes to the tiger (any tiger), it’s all about muscles (%72.6), and that is what gives the striped cat a super advantage over any other predator, including bears, lions, crocodiles and humans no matter how muscular. A tiger has most of the advantages; size, bulk, muscle density, 1 on 1 takedown experience, aggression, bite force, intellect, arsenal, canine strength…

The tiger’s strength is legendary. The authors of Wild Cats Of The World (Mel and Fiona Sunquis) refer to some incredible examples of tiger’s strength. One account comes from Myanmar; a tiger dragged away a gaur bull weighing 770 kg… 13 men were unable to move the carcass of this large animal a single yard! There are other records of tigers dragging and carrying large kills over great distances. One tiger was reported to have carried a full grown horse for 500 metres. Another tiger carried an adult heifer up a 12 foot high embankment.

Another example of tiger’s strength is it’s swimming ability. There are records of tigers periodically visiting islands in the Sunda Strait despite the strong tidal current of about 4 km/h. (The islands are about 4 km from the mainland.) As for climbing ability, tigers have been observed to climb smooth bark trees to a height of 10 metres. The tiger’s jumping ability is well developed. They can jump up to 10 metres in length. This exceeds the human world record for the long jump.

As for being attacked by other animals, the tiger was observed to have killed 12 wild dogs out of a pack of 22, with many others badly injured before the dogs overcame the tiger. The Amur Tiger, being the largest of all tiger species possesses an unthinkable amount of strength. It is the strongest living land creature on earth measured by it’s power to weight ratio. They are able to leap 5 metres vertically in the air, there have been reports of tigers leaping up to attack helicopters monitoring them.

A tiger’s strength is almost phenomenal. It’s easier to quote from people who have witnessed it rather than trying to explain why and how. Here are just a few. Numerous more such accounts can be found in literatures by famous hunters, scholars and animal trainers.

    “A 300 kg Siberian (Amur) tiger: 300 x 72.6 = 217 kg muscles.
    217 x 3.35 + 300 – (7.7 x 3) – (2.7 x 3) = 998.4 kg brute strength.
A tiger’s legs are so powerful that they can remain standing even when dead with a slight support. Siberian or Bengal tigers the front paw size generally varies from 12 to 16 cm. Some large ones maybe up to 18 cm. (Almost square)” – QUORA.

“A tiger has %16 larger brain (by volume) than equal sized lion.” – TELEGRAPH, UK.

“The tiger has a more arched and convex profile of the skull. Beside the 3 lobes of the blade of this tooth there is a tubercle on the inner side. This tubercle is larger and better developed in the upper carnassial of the tiger than it is in the lion. The tiger’s skull is also wider and more massive than the lions. However the stout rounded and brouder skull of a tiger gives it more power at the jaws.” – JIM CORBETT, IDIOSYNCHRATIC TEMPLE TIGER, PAGE:178-REF:47.

“Tiger’s short time memory alone lasts about 30 times longer than humans… and their memories are made with stronger brain synapses, meaning that they can remember more and do not forget things as easily as we do.” – SLIGHTLYVIRAL.

“A tiger is a professional killer, a trained soldier from a task force whose only goal is to kill and survive. If a tiger decides to kill you nothing can stop it and you can do nothing. A tiger will never changes it’s mind.” – DAVE SALMONI.

“Genghis was a large male tiger of Ranthambhore National Park. He weighed approximately 250 kg and and had been featured National Geographic’s `Land Of The Tiger`. He invented the technique of chasing the prey into the water and then hunting it down. In water prey’s (usually deer) speed lowers considerably and hence it is easier to catch it. He was very ferocious and athletic. He had been known to reclaim his kill from the crocodiles in the lake by wrestling it from their mouths. 1 in 5 of kills would be successful. It has been known to run over 150 metres and has managed to kill. It has also managed to swim 45 metres with the carcass of an adult deer weighing around 200 kg after wrestling it away from crocodiles. The technique of chasing prey into the water was unknown till 1980s till Genghis invented it. Other tigers have learnt this technique of hunting by observation. Unfortunately, Genghis fell victim to a poacher and disappeared from the jungles forever.” – SEEMA KHINNAVAR, CELEBRITY TIGERS-GENGHIS THE MASTER KILLER.

“When a tiger is forced to fight, it will start treating a lion not as an opponent that it wants to dominate, but as a prey that it wants to kill. Lion stands up face to face with a killer that has nowhere to back out and won’t let go. When a tiger is forced to fight, the fight ends with the tiger’s opponents death.” – DAVE SALMONI.

“To clarify the relationship between bears and tigers, I interviewed local hunters, old timers, Primorski Krai. 7 people responded that the tiger specifically hunts for a bear. 14 described the tiger-bear fights without a tragic outcome. 2 remembered when a bear strangled a tiger, 11 claimed that the tiger killed the bear, and 2 hunters assured that the bear leaves the grounds where the tiger appeared.” – RUKOVSKY, RUSSIAN BIOLOGIST.

“Here’s a source stating that tiger kills brown bears far more often than not, face to face confrontations. In 44 recorded encounters between tigers and brown bears; the tiger initiated contact in 12 cases, while the bear initiated contact in 8 cases. Of these encounters; %50 resulted in the dead of bear, %27.3 resulted in the dead of tiger, and %22.7 of encounters both animals survived and parted ways. So in face to face encounters; the tiger had killed the bear 22 times, and the bear killed the tiger 12 times.” – CARNIVORECONVERSATION.

“In 1921 on the shores of the Chambal River, Kesri Singh discovered that, while crossing the river a tiger had fought off and kill a crocodile-loosing part of his tail in the process.” – JIM CORBETT, IDIOSYNCHRATIC TEMPLE TIGER, PAGE:187-REF:23.

“This happens often and usual outcome is a dead crocodile. In a very rare event a tiger may die and it would be worth exploring why. At Tadoba, India, lake is literally filled with crocodiles and yet they leave clear passage when a tiger comes to drink water. Even when there has been a competition for prey between crocs and tigers, crocs stay well clear of the tiger.” – NIGAM SWASTIK.

“There is a case of Bengal tiger taking on a polar bear and wounding it fatally. It’s genus names refers `the hunter of all` and aptly suits it’s nature of killing bigger animals.” – JANKOWSKI, PAGE:15.

“They call the lion kig of the jungle, but the tiger is the royal lord of all animal creation. You can cow a lion, but a tiger is fearless. I will put any one of my full grown tigers in any arena with a full grown lion and post $1000 that the tiger will kill the lion.” – MABEL STARK, THE FIRST EVER WOMAN TIGER TRAINER, PAGE:13-REF:55/66.

“The outcome of a given fight completely depends on the individuals; their history, fighting style and psychology… but if I had to put my money on it, I would give the advantage to the tiger. What I’ve seen from the tigers, they seem to be more aggressive, they go for the throat go for the kill. Whereas the lions are more `I will just pound you and play with you`.” – CRAIG SAFFOE, A BIOLOGIST AND THE CURATOR OF GREAT CATS AT THE SMITHSONIAN ZOO WASHINGTON DC.

“Rex, a royal Bengal tiger was the most dependable cat I have ever trained. He went to greater lengths to avoid a fight than any other lion or tiger I have known. When the issue was forced upon him and there was no escape from a battle, he fought like a demon and usually won. 3 or 4 times lions are ganged up on such occasions and dragged him down from his roost and always lived to regret it. For Rex was at his best when the odds were against him.” – CLYDE BEATTY’S ACCOUNTS, PAGE:167-REF:7.

“In my opinion 100 on 100 fights will be always won by a tiger. A tiger of a similar size is more agile, it’s equally strong and similarly armed (canines and claws), but it fights in a different way. A tiger often turns on it’s back gripping a lion until it defeats it.” – JOHN SMITH CLARKE, LION TRAINER, UNIVERSITY OF GLASGOW ZOOLOGICAL SOCIETY… analyzed the fighting styles of tigers and lions, on the basis of a real recorded fight.

“Tigers show absolutely no fear crocodiles/bears in their habitat and they don’t tolerate the disturbance of other animals in their territories. Fiercly territorial cat aka the king of the jungle.” – TAPATALK.

Cats shares %95.6 of their DNA with the tigers.

Tiger's swipe can reach a greater distance up to 140 km/h with a bigger and heavier paw, before any living creature reach.

A tiger goes into a fight all or nothing. He fights to kill, not just to push aside someone and get better food.

A tiger has most of the advantages; size, bulk, muscle density, one on one takedown experience, aggression, bite force, intellect, arsenal, canine strenght, agility... He is everything that's wild, savage, lordly and sinister.

The Sumatran Tiger is the fiercest. The Bengal Tiger is the most skillful. The Siberian Tiger is the biggest.

The foothills of the Himalayas are larger than the tigers in the Central India.

Tigers in general have more developed bones and muscles than lions. It can kill monstrous preys with just one swipe of the paw.

Tigers take the more assassin mindset who is extremely calculative and self reliant. They try to go for the kill as soon as possible not wasting any time. That is how tiger evolved throughout the ages and because it's a solitary cat, if forced in to a corner it will try to end the fight as soon as possible.

A tiger has an equal bite force to the lion despite being 25 kg lighter. 1850 N. for a 150 kg tiger, 1850 N. for a 175 kg lion. (Aurora Grandal-D'Anglade) According to this study a tiger the same size as the lion would bite more than %50 harder.

" In Khana National Park %25 of tigers deaths are from other tigers and only %5.5 of lions deaths are from other lions. Out of 21 lions monitored by scientists, only 3 of them were killed by fighting in 5 years." (PAGE: 60, WONDERS OF LIONS - GEORGE & KAY SCHALLER.)

    "A tiger is stronger by;
    30.10% in shoulder joints,
    34.70% in hip joints,
    31.91% in forelimbs,
    34.91% in backlimbs.

A tiger has 72.6% muscle mass and a lion has 58.8% muscle mass. A tiger also has 7.7% body fat while lion has almost double at 13.7%.

The lion's humeroradial index (measure of it's limb proportions) at 98.3% is closer to that of the cheetah (101.3) than to that of the tiger (89.8)

    S.Fatalis (78.9)-P.Tigris (82.4) -3.5
    S.Fatalis (78.9)-P.Leo (89.5) -10.6
    A.Jubatus (100.1)-P.Tigris (82.4) -17.7
    A Jubatus (100.1)-P.Leo (89.5) -10.6

...the tiger is closed to S.Fatalis (Smilodon) and the lion is closer to A.Jubatus (Cheetah)."

In Jim Tully's book; Circus Parade (Ref:42) there's an entire chapter devoted to lion vs tiger fights. It has a fascinating account of how the people of the circus used to talk about what would happen in a fight between Bad Bill; a fierce lion who supposedly "could lick anything that walks or swims in the world" and had killed a trainer... and Ben Royal, a Bengal Tiger. When because of unfortunate circumstances, the 2 cats really fought a battle; "Bad Bill was found, his throat torn, his stomach ripped open, and part of his carcass eaten. Ben Royal with bloody jaws dozed near him... The tiger was afterward billed as Ben, The Lion Killer."
