Sure there are many people ashamed of public assistance like food stamps and such but I also know plenty that couldn’t care less and like the free handout and have the mentality that if it’s there I am gonna get mine.

Well, policies are not made for some minority that will always find a way to mooch of public assistance. That shouldn’t be the criterion. You say that it’s stupid to pay them for for doing nothing, I say pay them a livable wage.
But it’s not just that. Take for example student debt forgiveness. There is always a boomer that will show up informing the rest how they worked their way through college and bought a house. That was when college was $5, jobs paid a livable wage and buying a house was actually a thing that you could do without bleeding through the ass.

Yes, I knew the situation of healthcare, I didn’t find out about it now. But it’s only after you live in it that you realize the craziness. I speak from a very privileged spot by the way. My state insurance is phenomenal. Also, Rutgers is surprisingly socialist in that regard. We all have the same insurance but we pay premiums that are proportionate to our income! What? Fist up New Jersey <3

I was mostly talking about things like parental leave (non existent, also if you bring up that you want a year off to stay with your kid you are lazy) or the fact that if you don’t live in a good school district (because you know, rent will be through the roof) you really have to send your kid to private school.

It’s not a perfect system. It has its faults. But honestly I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else in the world if I had the option.
I didn’t say it’s stupid to pay them for doing nothing. I am saying it’s stupid to actually get paid more than you were before as a consequence of this crisis. It’s illogical and ridiculous. At best under these circumstances I would draw the line at getting full assistance in unemployment of what you are losing out. It can’t be more. On another note incidentally a recent.NewJersey law now allows for paternity leave. I have a friend that basically took the entire summer off and got paid to be with his wife and his newborn.

I disagree with student loan forgiveness. I don’t think the payments are set up in a way that prevents you from succeeding down the road. I speak from personal experience on that. Again this country is different than most of the world in that regard.

I was a Democrat my entire life. Ever since I could vote starting in 1992 I voted that way. But as I matured and started a family I started to look at things differently. You know the saying if you’re a conservative before 30 you have no heart and a liberal after that you have no brain. I think there is some truth to that.

Too much government dependency and assistance is not a great thing. In the 1950’s the African American divorce rate/ two parent household was better than that of a white married couple. Do you know what changed ? Government handouts led to a less need to sustain such a family. A pregnant woman did not need a potential husband/father in order to support her family. She became married to the government. And fatherless homes lead to children taking the wrong path and in turn to crime and poverty.

Look I’m going to be be very brief. I respect your levelheadedness (if that’s even a word) and your respectful answers but these are things that we probably fundamentally disagree on and this is not a proper forum to discuss them. So, very briefly:

If your job pays you $2 an hour, should government assistance keep that oppression going? No, I don’t think so.
Education is a right, and as such, it should be offered. Just because you don’t think that people have serious problems or even because you made smart choices and got out of it (congrats) doesn’t make it less of a problem. I’m very seriously considering that my kids should learn Greek and French so we can have an option to send them to school in Europe. Undergrad education has nothing to be jealous of (if you exclude the MITs and the Caltechs) and is free.

I know the saying and I completely disagree. Again, too large of an issue to be discussed here. I have actually made my father in law mad so many times that my wife has made me swear to not start political shit anymore I do think I have some brain though.

Your last part must be a joke for sure. Why would you ever stay with a spouse just because you need them to support you?! If that’s not the prime example of an unhappy marriage I don’t know what is.

I respect your point of view and yes we fundamentally disagree on a lot. And there nothing wrong with that. It doesn’t make you wrong or me right. Unfortunately in today’s climate my point of view is usually shouted down or even censored. That’s un American plain wrong.

Just to clarify my earlier point. I was trying to illustrate that a woman was less likely to become pregnant if she had serious doubts on whether the father would be there or be supportive. They knew that without that it would be difficult if not impossible to raise that kid adequately. But as a result of massive welfare programs that changed. Again the father could be substituted by the government and that in turn led to many one parent homes.
