Still no pro stints for UAAP athletes, says executive director

    Luisa Morales (Philstar.com) - December 18, 2020 - 9:45am

MANILA, Philippines — UAAP student-athletes will still not be allowed to participate in professional leagues without giving up their eligibility to play for their respective universities.

This despite the Games and Amusements Board's (GAB) recent introduction of the Special Guest License (SGL) that would enable collegiate athletes to participate in GAB-sanctioned leagues.

UAAP to be closer to fans on multiple platforms
"At the moment, in the eyes of the UAAP for as long as any league is sanctioned by GAB, we consider it as a professional league," said UAAP executive director Atty. Rebo Saguisag in a press conference on Thursday.

"Any athlete that participates therein will be considered a professional athlete which makes him/her ineligible to participate in the UAAP which is an amateur league," he added.

    NCAA ok with special license

UAAP rival league NCAA has already accepted GAB's terms of the SGL and has given its athletes the green light to participate in professional leagues through the special license.

The SGL would require a student-athlete to ask permission from their school to participate in the professional league, and it would keep them eligible to still play for their respective colleges and universities in the amateur leagues.

However, Saguisag said that the UAAP is still open to further discussions and a possible change of policy should it be in the best interest of its student-athletes.

"We remain dynamic, the league is dynamic and we continue to listen and observe the changes nationally and internationally on what would be best for the student-athlete," said Saguisag.

"If makakabuti sa kanila, there's no stopping us from changing our policy," he added.

The UAAP has recently cancelled its 83rd season amid the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and is targetting a late 2021 start date for Season 84.
This is a 1GDL thing right?

Yes..the Special License GAB gave him to be able to play at Chooks 3x3...

With NCAA ok with this SGL thing with GAB, I hope PBA would copy the B League's Special Designated Player rule...I like to see players like Oftana, Abando and CariƱo apprenticing with PBA teams

      • There’s a lot of bad players in the PBA right now.
A lot of these young guys would be upgrades over them.

        Munzon should go number one

I haven't heard his name in basketball in years.. He could have turned pro earlier if he's really serious in basketball but chose to join next year's stacked draft..

Well showbiz is hard today. More competition with the abs shutdown and limitation to do shoots.

Meralco may show interest in Andre Paras in the second round.

and I thought he'd stick to acting as he hasn't played competitive basketball for awhile.

IMO though he looks good (no homo), its difficult to cast him due to his height , his usual onscreen partners before like Yassi Pressman and Barbie Forteza are a foot smaller than him which doesnt translate well in screen

hope he gets drafted as this yr's batch is too loaded

He'll most likely get drafted. Name recall alone would be enough to earn him consideration from the different teams. Not to mention that drafting doesn't end anymore in the second round and can go as deep as the 5th or 6th. Not to mention the above average numbers he produced in the D-League when he was still active.

It's getting signed to play for a team that should be worth watching...

                        • Been thinking about the Gilas draft, and really, a big reason for that is to make players available for Gilas. It's a band-aid solution.

As for availability, a big reason for that is the PBA's scheduling. Last year's WC stint was an example. THREE WEEKS after the Commissioner's Cup Finals. Barely any time to prepare.

What if, instead of a special draft, the PBA schedules the season so as to give time for international events, and provides breaks for Gilas training and development sessions? That would be a better solution. And Tab still gets to pick the players. I'd think he'll prioritize youth and potential, so it's likely thay we won't have a problem with developing them.

The more we tank internationally, the more they lose fans, and the less profit they'll get.

Hope he's as versatile as them on defense.

The problem with him is his consistency and commitment. And also what is his real height? He was definitely not taller than 6'3 in HS and looked undersized in UP. Watched him in the finals against the RCs I thought he was overrated back then. Dude had one ok game but because he's a Paras and had the looks a lot of people thought that he was the one carrying that team lol. There's a reason he didn't do well in UP and never made team A in San Beda despite having his father in the coaching staff. Everyone knew basketball is just a side gig his real career is in showbiz. I was surprised he had a career after college.

I'd pick him over Pasaol ( never liked his stat padding, lack of discipline and low effort on D) but pick the other names before him unless he's out of showbiz for good
