    Default Question About Zone Defense

In the Spain ACB League today Malaga was getting handled by Baskonia and went to a 2-3 matchup zone defense in the second half and it totally turned the game around..

Any of you guys think the zone defense has more of a place in the Turkish Airlines League ?

Keep in mind Baskonia is a euroleague team....

Zone defense has just use for confuse an opponent for a short time. With zone for a long period you will have big rebounding issues and you will get one 3 pointer from the corner to another. Zone cant be used in a high quality game in todays modern basketball.

    Good reply...Thanks

Found in interesting how a good team like Baskonia couldn't score against it for a full quarter today.....Malaga did get away from it early 4th quarter though.....They actually did come back and win the game and that zone in the 3rd quarter was the reason why....

Zone could bring more results in earlier period . Nowaday, teams had better percents of shoots .In small ball ,players on position pf are fast ,so on zone they are more danger for offensive rebound ,on defense man to man ,there are more contact play .Zone could be good, when some team wants to direct other on some solutions. For exaple,if play Zenit against Cska,Zenit on almost all segments is weaker ,so match to them Cska shoots 33 shoots for 3p, no matter if half of shoots is open ,because half of that shoots would open for 2points and percent would be better in that case .

I think it comes down to matchups before all. If you can use zone defense to exploit a weakness in a team, then why not. Of course, even then there is a gamble factor that will always be present with zone defense, and that is what if their shots start falling like crazy.

But let's give a real-life example from EL. This edition of Zvezda is fielding some strange lineups, like Brown - Baron - Lazic - Gist - Kuzmic, which is basically 4 non-shooters in the lineup. I would be comfortable playing a lot of zone vs such a team, because you could zone out & switch the PnR and completely focus on stopping the ball movement inside or slashing. I would be fine with Lazic and Brown shooting from outisde all night.

During Radonjic era, Zvezda play a LOOOOT of Box-and-One zone defense (recently made popular by Torono in the Finals vs Warriors). That was our base defense for several seasons, and Zvezda was always one of the best defensive teams in the EL during those years (Usually Top 3. if not the top). We would use a combination of Jovic/Lazic/Dangubic to be the And One guy, who will take care of the PG/primary PnR player then the rest would zone in a box shape and switch and cover everything. This defense was extremely proficient at stopping PnR, penetration and ball movement inside. It was vulnerable at corner 3s, but front and 45 degrees was well covered. So, teams that had a lot of patience and ball movement, to move players into corners and shoot from there, usually did well against us.

We didnt mention , if some team play zone to exploting shooting lacks of opponent .On zone, there are some solutions except shoots ,what could make problems on zone even if some team has bad shooting .For example high-low ,or moving on weak side, shoot from mid-range ,early offense where can use not set defense .

What is the best zone defense in your opinion? Is it 1-3-1 or 2-3 or 3-2?

There is no such correct answer. It depends on what you are trying to "stop".

paspalj responses more or less correctly . 3-2 zone very infrequently played ,1-3-1 some atypical teams ,Partizan last time when coach was Vujosevic played often ,we got enough benefits .Valencia in era of Perasovic in some situation played 1-3-1 . Turkey with Tanjevic 2010 played 2-1-2 with Asik in line of free throws ,they crashed Slovenia and France . Zone 2-3 defense is passive zone ,usually play to keep some center in offense ,also provoke shoots ,if offense hasnt more than one good shooter ,and if doesnt good attack space between lines .There are also match up zones or zone press,Maccabi in earlier periods ,almost every game in some period played some atypical defense .
