  • Naturalized Players in 2019 WC

Naturalizations have become "natural" today. According to Eurohoops, there are 12 naturalized players in this tournament.

    • Deon Thompson - Côte d'Ivoire
    • AJ Slaughter - Poland
    • Ricardo Ratliffe - South Korea
    • Michael Roll - Tunisia
    • Andray Blatche - Philippines
    • Reggie Moore - Angola
    • Jeff Brooks - Italy (Italian wife)
    • Blake Schilb - Czech Republic (Czech wife)
    • Scottie Wilbekin - Turkey
    • Nick Fazekas - Japan (He's eligible for the Hungarian passport actually through his grandparents)
    • Derek Needham - Montenegro
    • Dar Tucker - Jordan

All naturalized players are the US-born.

This practice goes way back in Europe, but there seems to be an increase in African passports (also Brandon Davies with Uganda). Does it bring an advantage? in ACB especially?

Also, it's not a naturalization, but Ekpe Udoh is playing for Nigeria, having never lived there (both parents are from Nigeria).

technically, he's not counted as naturalized due to his Greek ancestry. A bit similar to Chris Kaman case in the past with Germany.

interesting one. The eligibility due to ancestry is there, and he's in the team together with Blatche, which means yes, his case is like Calathes's.

However, according to this article; "...the World Cup operates under FIBA rules which could classify him as “naturalised” as he obtained his Filipino passport after the age of 16... However, the Philippine basketball federation (SBP) is trying to convince FIBA to accept Clarkson as a Filipino citizen." Since both Blatche and Clarkson are in the roster, I assume they must have managed to convince FIBA.

I didn't know this. Alright, then i don't know what makes his case different than Calathes's in terms of eligibility.

Gilas Pilipinas head coach Yeng Guiao has ruled out Jordan Clarkson's participation in the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup.

Guiao had included Clarkson in the 19-man pool for the tournament, but acknowledged on Wednesday that the chances of getting the Filipino-American guard to play in China was slim to none.

"Mukhang wala na si JC, so Jordan, it's too late at this point," said Guiao. "FIBA has not indicated any changes in its original decision, so we just have to move on."

That's from two days ago. I don't know if that's the final word, but I guess it's fair to assume he's not going to play.

Even though he obtained Greek citizenship after he turned 16, Calathes has never been considered as naturalised player by FIBA.

Same status applies to Koufos. On the other hand, Tyler Dorsey and Mike Bramos aren't accepted as locals.

I believe it's because Calathes already played for Greece before the passport before 16 rule was implemented.

Nick Nurse - Canada .. jk.

But seriously, Canada hasn't used a naturalized player since Samuel Dalembert (who moved to Montreal from Haiti at 14), but current player Kyle Wiltjer has never lived in Canada but has been a citizen since birth. His parents are Canadian, and his dad is a bit of a Canadian BBall icon.

No he didn't. The rule was already in place when he first played for the Greek NT.

Back then it was much easier for "well connected" federations to get the General Secretary clearance that's outlined in clause 21.b of the Book 3.

Now things have changed, FIBA doesn't do any favours anymore.
