Tim Cone is the least surprised with Slaughter’s impressive debut, saying it is merely a reflection of the hard work the seven-footer put in during the break in between conferences as he strives to get better after a long injury layoff.
“If you have a chance to watch us play against LG and the Korean teams, you’ll see that Greg is extremely playing well," said Cone. "Now, he is a year and a half, almost two years removed from his ACL injury.”
Cone said he has also made adjustments with the way he uses Slaughter. From a low-posting big man, he has turned the former Ateneo standout into a 'movement type of player."
“He is not the June Mar [Fajardo] kind of guy where he is going to sit on the post and try to beat people up in the post. He really is a movement type of player. He can shoot jumpers and he can get to the basket off rolls and stuff like that.
“We are kinda just figuring it out right now. We are using him a little bit differently than we used to in the past. He is responding very, very well. He is excited coming into practice every day. He is excited coming to the games. He knows he is going to play well."
On the other hand, Cone swears the extra work has made Slaughter quicker with or without the basketball.
“He is moving up and down the court, you saw him get down in transition and get that dunk. That was something that he couldn’t do a couple of conferences ago," Cone said. "He is playing quick out there. You have a seven-footer who plays quick, you really have a weapon."
