Would it really have been that hard to split up the teams from the same regions?

Top eight teams advance to the FIBA Americas Olympic Pre-Qualifying tournament in November, which seems awfully redundant. Curious what kind of team the US will field at these tournaments.

Following a three-day training camp in Miami that featured 21 athletes, the USA Basketball Women’s AmeriCup Team was finalized and is headlined by a pair of veterans, Tina Charles (New York Liberty) and Sylvia Fowles (Minnesota Lynx), who have earned a combined nine Olympic and FIBA World Cup gold medals.

The 12-member team that will compete in the FIBA AmeriCup, which will be held Sept. 22-29 in San Juan, Puerto Rico, also includes Jordin Canada (Seattle Storm), Napheesa Collier (Minnesota Lynx), Diamond DeShields (Chicago Sky), Stefanie Dolson (Chicago Sky), Olivia Nelson-Ododa (University of Connecticut), Arike Ogunbowale (Dallas Wings), Katie Lou Samuelson (Chicago Sky), Khadijah Sessions (Kouvot, Finland), Brittney Sykes (Atlanta Dream) and Elizabeth Williams (Atlanta Dream)

I don't think Sessions is even an active pro, but she played for Staley at South Carolina.

Probably ends any hopes GB might have had for recruiting the younger Samuelson, who had a very poor rookie season in the WNBA.

Strange choice of Sessions, when considering that Jewell Loyd was listed among the attendees. Maybe her former ties with Staley played a role. Nelson-Ododa is the only collegian.

Though announced in the trials roster, neither Natalie Achonwa nor Kia Nurse were selected. U19 star Aaliyah Edwards (2020 HS class) made the team.

Colombia was up 58-55 late but Brazil was able to get the ball in to Dos Santos for the crucial baskets. Key unsportsmanlike foul against Colombia too.

Slowish start by the US but once they settled down and stopped firing up so many early threes Paraguay didn't offer much resistance. For the weaker teams it's all about getting that one win to move on to the extremely redundant Olympic qualifiers.

Cuba used to be good.

USA, Brazil, Canada, and Puerto Rico have clinched the semifinal spots with one game to go, if my understanding of the Group A tiebreaker situation is correct. US has cut down the three-point attempts the last two games. Brazil was very shaky in their opener against Colombia but they have good size so it will be interesting to see if they can give the US a game.

Mexico and Paraguay are out of the Olympic qualifying.

The teams to the world OQT should came out from this tournament, there is not point to have another tournament from the americas next year.. Fortunately for Argentina, next year will have another chance...

Even though the USA-Brazil score is reasonably close Brazil was never in the game. Semis on Saturday are USA-Puerto Rico and Canada-Brazil.

USA won the tournament as expected after clearly beating Canada 67-46. For the winners, good tournament of veterans Fowles (MVP), Charles and Dolson, among the newcomers Canada and DeShields earned All-Five honors. The injury suffered by Kayla Alexander in Sf hurt the (low) chances of Canadian team in the final. Alexander and Damiris Dantas (Bra) completed the All-Five selection.

Now the same pool groups less Mexico and Paraguay will compete again in a first phase of Pre-Olympic QT in Canada and Argentina on Nov 10-18. What a waste of energies!

Pretty comfortable showing from the US team. My biggest question looking towards the Olympics is how things will look with the back court. Bird, Taurasi and Diggins-Smith barely played this year so who know what their form is going to be like. There are other options for sure but it feels like the next generation just doesn’t compare at this point.

The pre-Olympic qualification does seem pretty pointless. I suppose it’s an opportunity for teams that might not otherwise be able to get some competitive games for quite a while to do so though.

Didn't get to watch the final but the US was very sloppy in the semi against Puerto Rico. Obviously there were a lot of factors limiting player availability but still unclear why a few of these players were on the team.
