  • 2019 Junior NBA Global Championship (August 6-11)

This was kind of fun last year and the NBA has clearly put a lot into it. From the other thread:

    Back for 2019:
The Jr. NBA is the premier resource for youth basketball players, parents, coaches and league administrators looking to learn more about the game.

    Changes appear to be:

--More extensive US qualifying tournament, with a first round of local tournaments sponsored by NBA teams
--Asia Pacific will now include players from multiple countries
--Latin America team will include Caribbean players
--India team will be a selection instead of a city team (not totally clear)
The first US regional is the Central Region this weekend. This produced both champions last year.

Several Canadian provinces have determined their champions, the Canadian championship is June 13-16 in Toronto.

Europe/Middle East selection camp was in Bologna last weekend, apparently the Middle East region has been moved from Africa to Europe this year.

Last year's boys world champions Drive5 defended their regional crown by erasing a 15-point halftime deficit to edge Oz Elite 58-53 in the final.

                Day 1 Scores

                US Boys
                Southeast 66 West 56
                West 59 Northeast 56
                Southeast 88 Central 67

                Mid-Atlantic 69 Northwest 50
                South 55 Northwest 51
                Mid-Atlantic 86 Midwest 78 (OT)

Southeast maybe the early favorites after crushing the "defending champs" (with all-new players) on television tonight. Mid-Atlantic which has a combo of players from two top DC/Baltimore AAU programs will also be tough.

                International Boys
                Canada 70 Mexico 44
                Canada 64 Asia Pacific 61
                China 47 Mexico 38

                Latin America 63 Europe 58
                Africa 82 Europe 41
India 73 Latin America 67 (OT)

African team has two of their top players from last year (Marouf Moumine and Babacar Djiby Ly) and they will be very tough to beat in the international bracket. Nice win for India.

                US Girls
                West 60 Southeast 56
                West 68 Northeast 65 (OT)
                Central 75 Southeast 48

                Northwest 90 Mid-Atlantic 49
                Northwest 72 South 71
                Mid-Atlantic 59 Midwest 49

Standout players included West's Breya Cunningham, with 55 points and 26 rebounds in two games, and Northwest's Malia Samuels, who scored 52 points and shot 10/20 on threes.

                International Girls
                Canada 64 Mexico 41
                Canada 60 Asia Pacific 31
                China 49 Mexico 41

                Latin America 53 Europe 39
                Europe 51 Africa 34
                Latin America 54 India 21

Latin America girls with players from Brazil and Argentina U14 National Teams is much stronger than last year's South America team, but Canada is probably the favorite here.

Good streaming quality. Watching some girls' games I was impressed by Samuels (NW) and by Nichols & J. Williams (Central), E-ME and Africa disappointing.

                    Day 2

                    US Boys
                    Northeast 68 Central 59
                    West 79 Central 53
                    Southeast 80 Northeast 66

                    Midwest 70 South 69
                    Northwest 52 Midwest 43
                    Mid-Atlantic 67 South 54

Southeast and Mid-Atlantic teams win their brackets, both have the size to give the Africans trouble in a potential championship matchup.

                    International Boys
                    Asia Pacific 50 China 42
                    Canada 73 China 65
                    Asia Pacific 74 Mexico 61

                    Africa 63 India 21
                    Africa 65 Latin America 34
                    Europe 52 India 41

Strong showing for Asia Pacific despite having to assemble players from eight countries with just two practices. Europe came from 15 down at halftime to beat India for their first win.

                    US Girls
                    Central 67 Northeast 46
                    Southeast 66 Northeast 38
                    Central 60 West 55

                    South 84 Midwest 61
                    Mid-Atlantic 46 South 41
                    Northwest 77 Midwest 65

Central and Northwest won their brackets. Northwest's Miracle Sheppard with 14 steals against the Midwest team.

                    International Girls
                    China 53 Asia Pacific 44
                    Canada 61 China 36
                    Mexico 53 Asia Pacific 26

                    Africa 57 India 36
                    Latin America 47 Africa 26
                    Europe 62 India 23

Canada and Latin America both go 3-0, but no one looks ready to compete with the American teams.

Service Day and Skills Contest tomorrow and then knockout play starts on Friday.

                      Bracket Quarterfinals

                      US Boys
                      Southeast 72 Midwest 45
                      South 67 Northeast 62 (OT)
                      Central 72 Mid-Atlantic 58
                      West 60 Northwest 56 (OT)

Defending Champs Drive 5 from the Central Region went winless in the group stage, but outscored the Mid-Atlantic 35-13 in the fourth quarters for the upset. Second year in a row the Mid-Atlantic representatives have gone 3-0 in the group stage only to lose the first knockout game. Southeast continues to look the strongest.

                      International Boys
                      Canada 64 India 56 (OT)
                      Europe 58 China 57
                      Africa 70 Mexico 36
Asia Pacific 69 Latin America 59

Seven of the teams here are competitively matched...Finland's Elias Sauramo hit a three at the buzzer to give Europe the win over China.

                      US Girls
                      Central 65 Midwest 36
                      Mid-Atlantic 58 Southeast 51
                      Northwest 78 Northeast 51
                      West 78 South 64

Favorites all won handily, should be some really good matchups tomorrow.

                      International Girls
                      Canada 65 India 26
                      Europe 52 Mexico 46
Latin America 47 Asia Pacific 41
                      Africa 39 China 29

Winless Asia Pacific cut a 29-11 halftime deficit to 35-34, but couldn't come all the way back.

According to the schedule on the Exposure Events website, these are the "positive finish" matchups for quarterfinal losers:

                      Boys: India-Mid-Atlantic, Latin America-Northwest, Midwest-China, Mexico-Northeast
                      Girls: Midwest-Asia Pacific, Mexico-Southeast, India-Northeast, South-China

Last year the US teams swept all the inter-bracket games.

In the girls tournament Central beat a resilient Mid-Atlantic team with some fine plays of Jada Williams. Central's problems are the lack of size inside and rotation.
6-3 Breya Cunningham of West (36 pts, 22 reb and 88.9% FG!!) was simply too much for Northwest. She will be a huge threat for Central in the final.
Cunningham and teammate Judea Watkins as well as Central's Williams, S'mya Nichols and Grace Slaughter tried out at the U16 US team selection in May.

Update: Central girls repeat as US champs clearly winning over West after a great team effort.

Caught this on Fox, nice little concept, NBA clearly saw the little league world series and thought 'Why not' makes for entertaining tv. Looking forward to both finals.

                            Bracket semifinals and finals:

                            US Boys
                            Southeast 87 South 59
                            West 77 Central 74
                            West 80 Southeast 74

West team avenged their only loss of the tournament to take the US championship. Late technical foul and intentional foul hurt the Southeast. In the semis the West blew a 17-point lead against Central but pulled it out on a late three-point play by Taj DeGourville, averaging over 20 ppg for the tournament. Dunk contest winner Quinton Webb is just two points shy of having a double-double in every game so far, and they'll need all of his rebounding against a taller African team.

                            International Boys
                            Africa 66 Asia Pacific 55
                            Canada 65 Europe 59
                            Africa 80 Canada 46

Asia Pacific played Africa closer than anyone so far, behind 30 points from New Zealand's Dontae Nance. No such luck for the Canadians.

                            US Girls
                            Central 58 Mid-Atlantic 48
                            West 76 Northwest 57
                            Central 73 West 57

Balanced offense gets it done for the Central team against the West's two stars.

                            International Girls
                            Latin America 44 Africa 36
                            Canada 71 Europe 44
                            Canada 70 Latin America 54

Canada forced 32 turnovers (one below their average!) to win the battle of undefeated teams in the final.

Boys game should be interesting and competitive, girls game the US team should be favorites but it's hard to judge the Canadians since they haven't played the same level of competition.

                            Positive Finish Boys
                            Mid-Atlantic 79 India 26
                            Northwest 69 Latin America 53
                            Midwest 84 China 45
                            Northeast 72 Mexico 46

                            Positive Finish Girls
                            Midwest 76 Asia Pacific 47
                            Southeast 67 Mexico 20

Boys Championship: West 70 Africa 61

Really hard-fought game. Tied 44-44 after the third quarter, and the West team (City Ballers from LA, though one of their top players is from Las Vegas) hit four straight threes to open up a lead early in the fourth. Tough luck for Africa is their star Marouf Moumine left the game after landing awkwardly in the second quarter and did not return. Tyler Rolison played all 32 minutes and led the West with 21 points and 12 rebounds. African big man Seydina Faye posted 16 points and 24 rebounds and the announcers said he has only been playing basketball for seven months so remember that name.

Girls Championship: Central 72 Canada 35

First and third quarters were competitive but the Central girls (Missouri Phenom) outscored Canada (Brampton Warriors) 18-3 in the second and 23-5 in the fourth for the big win. Not sure what is the connection (if any) between this year's winners and last year's champions KC Prodigy--last year's team was almost all players from the Kansas City area, while this year's team has players from a broader area. Brampton kept alive the tradition of every Canadian youth team having a Bediako in their lineup.

Asia Pacific 61 South 59 (OT)

Dontae Nance's late basket gave Asia Pacific the first win for an international team against a US team in the history of the tournament. Considering all the factors, the A-P boys may have been the most impressive team in the tournament--10 players, 8 countries, 2 pre-tournament practices, one of their best players got injured early in the first knockout game against Latin America, but they didn't back down from anyone and got key contributions out of players from smaller basketball countries.

                              Northwest 72 Africa 34

Certainly a lot more fun than the Little League World Series. Would be nice if they are able to up the quality of some of the regional international selections in the future, as the African boys crushing everyone will get old, as will the US team winning the girls final by 30-40 points.
