US was on fire in the first quarter and led by as many as 16, but went cold in the second half. Powell who had the big game against Venezuela was just 1-8 from the field and fouled out in 14 minutes of play.

The US is getting flayed by Argentina right now...97-57. Yes, we're represented by collegiate players, but being down by 40 points is absurd. I hope we've got something for the Dominicans tomorrow.

US-Argentina was similar to the Canadian CIS guys playing Australia at the Commonwealth Games...they don't have the talent or experience or togetherness to defend a well-executing team of veteran pros. Thought the US also looked kind of tired and I wonder how much they have left for the bronze game tomorrow. They've given a good effort overall and it would be nice to see them get a medal.

US 39-point loss is tied by a 108-69 rout from Argentina (again) at Fiba Americas Championship 2001 as the worst ever. At that event also a college selection represented US, though it was NJCAA.

Argies were the best team on paper and proved the best team on the court as well...Scola finally with a big game in the final. US took a well-deserved medal with a big fourth quarter. More talented US teams have failed to do any better in recent competitions, although without Canada and Brazil the field was weaker than usual this time.

I was very surprised with the PR team. For the first time in a long time PR sent mostly young players with no senior FIBA experience and they looked composed. Argentina was just so superior to everyone else.

Argentina was up 45-37 in the third quarter but the US was able to clamp down on defense. Offense has a ways to go.

Semis will be Brazil-Colombia and USA-Puerto Rico. Brazil has some serious size coming through the ranks with 6-6 2000-born Stephanie Soares getting substantial playing time here and 6-7 Kamilla Cardoso one of the top players in next year's high school class.

Brazil fields a mix of prospects and veterans such as former WNBA star Erika (37 y) and looks as the tournament's favorite. US collegians were covincing just at times and will have to better perform against Puerto Rico that has a couple of good scorers in Jennifer O'Neill and Jazmon Gwathmey bringing international experience. Canada disappointing and Argentina unfortunate, could have been in sf.

Very tight all the way between the US and PR. US looking for just their second title since 1987, while Brazil hasn't won since 1991.

Deserved title from Brazil able to strike back anytime the gap got closed by US. Little Taina Paixao was inspired leading all scorers with 24. US team did well at times but struggled with poor shooting and got too little by too many players. Last US gold won in 2007 by a fine young team led by Angel McCoughtry.
