WOMEN'S BASKETBALL STANDOUT MAKES PUERTO RICO NATIONAL TEAM

Former University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) women's basketball standout, Deanna Kuzmanic, has been named to the Puerto Rican National Team and will be competing in the 40th Pan American Games this coming August.

Kuzmanic was raised with a basketball always nearby. She grew up with her parents coaching her older sister and naturally she followed in those footsteps, joining an organized team in the first grade. Her basketball journey would grow from there, and she continued to develop as a standout on the court. She ultimately picked UAB to further her education and basketball career.

A simple Puerto Rican flag emoji in her Twitter biography would change things for the course of her basketball career. The Puerto Rican Basketball Federation contacted Kuzmanic to see if she was eligible to play for the team and upon learning that she was, the coaching staff closely followed the remainder of her basketball career as a Blazer.

After a two week tryout, she has officially been named to the roster where they will start training for the Pan American games.

Kuzmanic has been practicing with the national team since July 1st and will continue until the end of July. On August 1st the team will switch gears from practice to play as they travel to Lima, Peru for the 40th Pan American Games.

The Pan American Games will gather around 6,700 athletes who will participate in 39 sports.

"It means everything to me to be able to represent Puerto Rico, the place where my grandparents were born and raised. It has been an amazing opportunity to play with and learn from such wise and talented players, and coaches who have competed in NCAA Elite Eights, the WNBA, and the biggest international stages," said Kuzmanic.

After the Pan American Games, Kuzmanic and the Puerto Rican National Team will travel to China for a series of scrimmages. At the end of September the squad will compete in the Americup in San Juan, Puerto Rico. They must take 8th place or higher to qualify for the Olympic Qualifier tournament which is held at the end of November.

"I look forward to experiencing basketball internationally for the first time, competing in the 40th Pan American Games, and having the opportunity to qualify for the 2020 Olympics. Among it all, I want to play my role to the best of my ability to help my team succeed and make Puerto Rico proud."

Kuzmanic finished out a polished career at UAB with impressive accolades throughout the season; 128 career starts, averaging 13 points and seven rebounds per game as a senior, a winner of the 2019 Jim Castañeda Conference USA Postgraduate Scholarship Award, and graduating with a Bachelor of Science in mathematics.

Her coaches have nothing but praise for the former Blazer, "We are all so excited for Deanna and the opportunity she has to compete for the Puerto Rico National Team. Any team she plays on will be better because of her amazing work ethic and outstanding leadership abilities. We wish her the best and look forward to following her journey," said UAB head coach Randy Norton.
A welcome addition to Puerto Rico's roster.

Every time these games come around it makes me sad to see how far this tournament has fallen. Up until 1991 this was the most prestigious tournament for USA basketball second only to the Olympics. I remember watching the ‘83, ‘87 and ‘91 tournaments clearly and it was awesome. The Olympic team that followed the Pan Am games was usually made up with players from that team. Now this tournament is borderlines unwatchable.

US basketball teams finally winners, even if it's just the 3x3 tournament!
In the women's competition Ruthy Hebard, Sabrina Ionescu, Olivia Nelson-Ododa and Christyn Williams (all college players) went undefeated to beat Argentina 21-17 in the final. Ionescu hit three 2-pointers to finish with 7, same as Hebard, her teammate at Oregon.
The men's team was just 2-3 after the prelim round, but then managed to overcome Brazil 21-12 in Sf and Puertorico 21-19 for the title. Jonathan Octeus topped the winners scoring 8 points each game.

The 3x3 tournament was played indoors. I haven't compared the shooting percentages, but it seems like a higher proportion of the games ended with a team reaching 21 points than in the outdoor FIBA tournaments. The few games I saw seemed to be officiated a little tighter than normal as well. US men pulled out a good win in front of a very pro-Puerto Rico crowd--PR scored three points in a row to tie the game at 19 but Octeus hit a pair of free throws for the win.

Interesting read on Big East selection representing US and some historical highlights:

As for the history of US lineups, it's true that they were mixed (Colleges, AAU, Army) until 1967, but the same happened with the Olympic teams until 1972. This was the common practice of the selection committees, since pros were not allowed to play in official international competitions. Besides talented but young collegians, AAU and Army contributed with experienced players. AAU/NIBL (Industrial League) and Army (that regularly played at the AAU Denver tournament) fielded athletes who had not yet (or at all) turned pro, ex collegians with excellent pedigree in some cases. At the end of 1960s however, AAU level faded substantially with the new established ABA league absorbing large part of the available players pool.

After 1987 Pan Ams US lineups were:
                        1991 - Colleges
                        1995, 1999 - CBA
                        2003, 2007 - Colleges
                        2011 - NBA D-League
2015 - Mix of colleges (7) and various pros (5).

                          USA 119 USVI 84
                          Puerto Rico 73 Venezuela 64
                          Argentina 102 Uruguay 65
                          Dominican Republic 65 Mexico 61

US came out shooting very hot, seven threes and 39 points in the first quarter. USVI has a few good players and a lot of international experience the past couple years, but they don't bring much energy or defense. US executed okay for a team of guys without much time together but PR and Venezuela will be much stiffer tests.

Argentina has pretty much a full team and looks like the clear favorite.

                            Puerto Rico 101 USVI 89
Argentina 102 Dominican Republic 97 (OT)
                            Uruguay 72 Mexico 61
                            USA 70 Venezuela 53

There's your illustration of how deep the US talent pool is relative other countries. Both teams missed a ton of open threes, but the US had a little more youthful energy and Myles Powell scored a hard-earned 30. US and PR play for the top spot in their group tomorrow.

DR, after a big fourth quarter comeback, was up 7 with 1:20 left in regulation and 4 with 15 seconds left, but Campazzo hit a three to send the game to OT where the Argies won it. Prior to the tying three, Argentina's previous 15 points had all come from the free throw line. Teams combined for 72 fouls, Scola and Laprovittola both fouled out in about 20 minutes of action.

                              Puerto Rico 87, USA 84

The US blew a 16 point lead and got outscored in the 4th quarter 23-12. Even though the FT disparity was suspect, the US had umpteen chances to win this one. Hopefully Argentina will be off their game or we'll still be staring at 1983 as the last time we won gold at the Pan Am Games.
