  • Cant even pay a player that was signed on peanuts and played only 2 months. It's the referee's fault.

      • What is happening in Greece at the moment is not only bad for Greek basketball, but also for European basketball. Because this decreases the chances of Rick Pitino staying at PAO. The EL having a hall of famer at Pao is a great asset. It would be interesting to see what this coach can do after one or two full seasons at the bench of a team like Pao.

If Pitino does not extent his contract, the heroics of both Greek teams may be responsible for that. They are both shooting themselves in the foot.

He has another year to run on his contract. It looks like he will stay if he doesn't find another offer. I don't think he's happy with Oly not turning up to games but obviously he still wants to be paid. Oly would be happy for him to leave as they hold him responsible for all the players he brought to the club that offered way less than expected.

              • Oly not paying anyone anything.

EuroLeague Basketball referred Olympiacos to the Finance Panel

EuroLeague Basketball announced that Olympiacos is monitored by the Finance Panel regarding overdue payments.

The complaint filed by the EuroLeague Players Association (ELPA).

                Per the competition’s announcement:

“The Euroleague Basketball Management Control Commission (MCC) has referred Olympiacos Piraeus to the Finance Panel for further monitoring of the club’s compliance status with the Financial Stability and Fair Play Regulations (FSFPR) for overdue payables, which are contained in the Euroleague Basketball Disciplinary Code.

The regulation whose compliance is in question concerns payments to Olympiacos players by the club. The case arose from a complaint filed with the MCC by the EuroLeague Players Association (ELPA).

The proceeding has been opened on the basis of an alleged infringement of the criteria established in Article 3.a) of the Financial Stability and Fair Play Regulations.

The MCC’s decision to refer the case to the Finance Panel means that the latter would be expected to issue a decision within the next 30 days, in accordance with Article 33 of the Euroleague Basketball Disciplinary Code.”

                • It looks like The Angelopoulos screwed the club up financially, and the club is not fit to compete even in the greek league. they don't want the club to be a doormat in top competition next season so they try to make it appear like they are fighting against corrupt Greek Basketball, refs, scumbag pao etc to get fan support. they are intentionally moving the club out of competition and successfully passing this as an honorable act. it is clear from the comments that the fans have bought it.

Disclaimer, I do not have much knowledge about Greek basketball. I do however find myself thinking the exact same as above. I think it is a travesty for Greek and European basketball that a team like Olympiakos cannot meet its financial obligations and try to pass it on as the fault of the Greek federation, the officials and Panathinaikos... It will be very interesting to see, how the Greek league and Euroleague will respond to this. Can Panathinaikos justify their spendings without Olympiakos? If not, then how will affect the Greek league? Can the Euroleague substitute Olympiakos with a team of the same quality and fan base? Will they maybe even keep them due to the 10 year contract? So many unanswered questions.

That they weren't even paying a club legend like Printezis wasn't a good sign.

                        • So, all Oly players are now for sale, is that it?

Printezis, milutinov and papanikolau could take better offers from other Euroleague teams, others not so much.

Milutinov is a free agent and most likely to go to Spurs who have his rights.

Both Papanikolaou and Printezis have another year to run on their contracts. They earn 850K and 1M euros respectively.

from what I see greek league is shit competition for a long time. unlike 90s, greek teams other than pao and oly are not even significant in bottom tier tournaments of fiba.(cept AEK)

pao will still need a play-off worthy roster, since they ll remain in EL. while oly may lose their A license if everything is true. it is also funny how the tables turned and the winds have changed since the last season. we were talking about DPG lol.

There are other teams with similar fan bases, but they are not at the EL level Olympiacos was. Olympiacos was a top 4 team until they decided not to pay the players. In Greece AEK Athens could take their place. If they will play in the EL, they can potentially increase their budget. They have a decent fan base and a decent arena. Much better than the arena of Olympiacos, which is arguably the least fit for basketball in the EL.

But if so, the Euroleague has to act fast.
