Not really, probably PBA has freed up its schedule already by August, Gilas is scheduled for tuneups in Spain on August 4-11 then uwi sila dito then off to China. Higjly improbable naman na after their Spain tuneups, babalik pa sila sa team nila... More than enough practice time actually, what is lacking is the tuneups. GILAS will have 4 practices in June (Monday-Thurs) starting Monday. Then in July another minimum 8 practices... Thats around 12 practices already...

      • I really like this 2019 NBA Champions - Raptors. This proves that we DO NOT NEED TO CONFORM to what is the prevailing international game nowadays.
this RAPTORS team showed us that we need to find a way on how we can be effective as a team, RATHER THAN imitating other international teams approach to the game.

Who would have thought that a SUPPOSED DINOSAUR CENTER in Marc Gasol can still remain effective, competitive and relevant to the Raptors run to the finals.
Who would have thought that a DIMINUTIVE, almost midget-like Van Vleet and Lowry, can help carry this RAPTORS team to the championship.

Ultimately, the Raptors made use of the right mix of players, and emphasizing their own strength in order to get their FIRST championship.

My point then is, even if a PG is below 6' ft. if he can be considered world class, and can also somehow carry its own weight in defense, then there should be no problem getting that guy in GILAS.
If a PF/ C is a traditional back-to-the-court player and usually had a slower pace than other bigs, but can definitely be as effective in attacking and helping in the defense, then there should be no problem getting that "slow poke".

Finally, I hope, our Gilas Team can devise a plan wherein our uniqueness as a team will be used as an advantage against other teams INSTEAD of looking at it as a disadvantage.

        • Agree about diminutive guards. But Gasol is nowhere near your prototypical dinosaur center.
Never look too far ahead. You might stumble on a block right in front of you.

yes he's not your typical center but he definitely nowhere near those supposed athletic type of player.
If we will look back in history, the typical Really NBA Great Centers, who were not named Russel ( more of a specialist ), you would notice that they have a back to the basket post moves; a facing the ring moves; a mid-range and long range jumpers; can attack to the ring; and have some semblance of good passing.

Ofcourse people like the Great Shaq may not fit the bill to the T, but he is Shaq! what can we do hehehehe
Other really great centers have a semblance of this kind of game I mentioned, and Marc Gasol fit that bill. Since he is an international player, it is but natural that he should know how to shoot the three. these things are usually normal qualities of a typical International Center so hindi na bago yan.

As to the midgets -- well those two proved that they were really great so okay lang na nasa lineup talaga sila.

            • marc and pau are not your traditional centers. while i agree they still have the skills typical to traditional centers, they also possessed of a modern big. marc is pretty mobile for his 7'1 frame. can junmar and greg same with marc in terms of mobility? no.

marc and pau still to the definition of stretch 5. they are no jurassic centers.

I guess what we are saying then is that, jurassic centers are low post players who are slow as compared to mobile centers. In that case, I would consider Junemar as mobile. not as mobile by other international bigs standards, but nonetheless a definite mobile big.

                • Going to the toronto model,Given the right dose of athleticism, length, size, quickness, skills and smarts,we could actually compete against the world's best. However Siakam may not be an elite athlete in the NBA but he is at least imo an abovev average athlete in the NBA.Ibaka is another above average athlete although he was not as athletic as he was. Those guys are around 6'8 and 6'10.what i mean is that we dont need to be
very tall to beat teams in the world stage.

Agree. And as to the "midget" Lowry, he compensates in his defense by taking charges. that is actually the best strategy that a small guy can use against the bigs. I usually call that a mismatch, especially when someone low posts against a "midget". a really good midget position defender can almost call it money, when he gets to defend against a low post player because he can hardly be noticed when defending a big, and almost likely falls down when the big barrels its way down low. that is an easy charging foul if the midget knows how to get into position.

i don't consider junmar as mobile. his reaction time in game situations are pretty slow unlike marc.

the things, we don't have 6'8 above players that are mobile. siakam and ibaka may not be that athletic, they are still mobile to their position. i say japeth and the many of our young prospects (kai, aj, cortez among others) are mobile than our present bigs. maybe almazan and troy are mobile but they are either short or thin to play 4 or 5 internationally.

I would consider Siakam to be an elite athlete. The way he runs the floor is Giannis-esque, and his stamina throughout 48 minutes is incredible. It’s almost a guaranteed 2 points if Siakam leads the fast break. He just isn’t as flashy when it comes to posterizing or just jumping over other players to score. Most of his production comes from driving right past them, post ups, or corner threes. I think Edu has the potential to become a Siakam like player in the future if he develops his handles and becomes a great slasher.

I think the only way we can win is if we can be as closely good defensively as a team as the raptors are. Like the way they switch on the shooters,(props on how marc gasol closes out on curry). That's basically how a team should defend in international competition. If we can have a good defensive coach that can try to teach that to our boys then we can be competitive. If JunMar can only play d like Gasol, he'll get significant minutes. But if not, he won't get those minutes and he won't be used much against Serbia and Italy (love a Boban vs JunMar 1v1 matchup) Against Angola he'll probably get more minutes. When JunMar's on the floor, I'd like more pick and rolls with him and castro (too bad kiefer ain't in the lineup) and more post up plays. Like u mentioned just utilize our strengths

TJ who couldn't get an NBA job made Junemar look like a statue. Granted they weren't matched up the whole game but Junemar was always late in his rotations. It's like Jones was always moving at a pace that's too fast for him. Of course JF could also score at will against TJ but that highlighted his weakness against mobile bigs. He could offer good resistance against post up bigs naman
