  • I noticed that we do have plenty of shooters this season. It’s a good sign.

I think Serrano physically has potential as a player about 5’10 but built like a brick house and very explosive, quick one of the reasons he was playing so well in the 3x3 against taller guys was because of his quick second jump and his strong core, problem was his skill set really was more of a forward than a guard. If he can transition and learn how to be a good pg then he’ll be fine. Thirdy wasn’t really a guard coming out of high school, he was a raw athlete but that was it because high school coaches used him that way. It’s all about giving time to development.
Coach Tab goal actually is to develop all his players especially Seniors and graduating players to have a good Pro career moving forward and maybe a Gilas player... He tries to improved on their weakness to become better pro players.. He convertes Mike Nieto from a HS C/PF to a 3 and D shooter at 3,Go to a stretch 4, Matt Nieto into a dynamic pass first PG with good outside shot and of course Thirdy into a playmaking SF/SG... GOAL ni Tab is all his graduating players should be at least a first rounder in the PBA...

Also converted Aaron Black from a potential star scorer to... a benchwarmer

Jokes aside Tab is very rigid with his system and each player's fit in his system. I still remember the outrage when he cut Abueva from the FIBA Olympic qualifying tournament team in 2016 lol.

            • I'm a Aaron Black believer . He was not given his fair shake in Tab's system. He's much better than that

if aaron black turns out to be good player... he might be a collateral damage of coaching politics innthe blue lair knowin aaron to be the son of norman..fan of adrian wong.. but aaron black is more well rounded although the issue of aaron is he is jack of all trades master of none type of player.. whole the ateneo core compose of specialists..
To becomes Asia's Best, we need to compete against the World's Best..
                1 Big 4 small > 5 out offense.

6'2 with shoes. Also comes with a lot of mental problems.

Black is a utility player. Doesn't do anything particularly well like shooting. Hard to stand out in Ateneo. How's his defense at the Dleague?

Abueva could have been a decent SF internationally with his wingspan. 6'1.5 without shoes with 6'6 wingspan. Had he been exposed to international competition he might have developed the tools, handles and shooting, to be a decent SF. However, his skill set remained as a PF.

Perez has a much more advanced skill set with around the same height but not the same length. With Perez's length he will only be effective internationally as a guard, hence his skills-- handles, shooting, passing-- should be more advanced.

During Abueva's rookie year he even saw minutes at center. He is faster and is just as strong than the usual pinoy bigmen. So his former coaches exploited his strengths and never bothered to develop his other skills. That resulted in his team winning in the NCAA, Dleague(or PBL?) and lots of individual awards.

Perez has slightly better skills. Let's see if his coaches can develop him right. He's more advanced than Abueva was at the same age.

                      • Kinda OT but since Perez was mentioned, I just found out that CJ never played a single game in the UAAP, he played 2 games for Ateneo in the Fil-Oil tournament and that's it...ok carry on.............

In terms of pba or international?

pba: I think he'll be a good pba player as is.

International: Like what most mentioned here, he will have to be a PG at that level. Defensively, I think he can guard opposing PGs. His shooting form is not broken so he won't be a liability on offense, and rebounding translates well at any level. In terms of play-making, hard to say because my basis is just youtube videos. And being mentored by someone like Coach Baldwin cannot be discounted, and he has shown willingness to play within a role. Overall, if he can transition into a PG, I can see him as a defensive specialist guard. If he remains a forward, then it will be better to look for someone else.

Does Thirdy have PG level handles, vision and shooting? Malayo pa I think. If he improves his shooting he can be a combo guard. But has it improved in recent years?

Good shooters on the other hand only need to improve their handles to be a combo guard. So an Abando or a Suerte need only polish their handles to get to the next level.

That said a Dave I is actually at that level. He is a combo guard. But needs to improve his vision to be a better point forward and then shooting to be a better PG.

Abando has never been a ball dominant guy. More than likely he will just improve the skills he has now and be a better version of the same player. Thirdy has always had the ball in his hands he was a power point forward in HS and in the Srs he had a lot of ball handling responsibilities. More times than not you do not add skills you polish the same skills you have had since HS.
