  • 2018 FIBA U18 Women's European Championship

Tournament will be held from 4-12 August in Udine (ITA).
The official website of the FIBA U18 Women's European Championship 2018. Competition schedule, results, stats, teams and players profile, news, games highlights, photos, videos and event guide.

The top five teams will qualify for 2019 U19 WC.

Belgium (winner of 2017 title with some returning players, notably the Massey sisters), Spain and France should be among the best, but other teams are expected to compete for the top positions as there's no big favorite. Germany, Russia and Italy also performed well in various prep tournaments.

There should be plenty of talent at the tournament and here's a coverage of the top players to watch:
It’s that time of the year again when the youth tournaments are coming thick and fast, with the latest on the agenda being arguably the most important. As I have emphasized previously, I love U18 because it acts like something of a watershed in terms of judging whether players might make the top grade. At […]

Interestingly, several U17 WC players are back to action in the U18 competition:
    - Hungary lists as many as eight players back from its 4th place team (but not the leading scorer Dombai)
    - Latvia has four (leading scorer Meldere, Vihmane, Nulle and Klescova)
    - France has two (Ewodo and Salaun) as well as Spain (leading scorer Carrera and Puyo) and Italy (Orsili and Pastrello). Italian team is missing its top prospect Sara Madera injured.

Another casualty at an U18 tournament, as Germany star Nyara Sabally fell in pain while running the floor free early in the game vs Hungary. Quite unexplicable. Video footage shows her holding her right ankle, reports say she was taken to hospital to evaluate a possible fracture to her lower leg. Headed to join her older sister Satou at Oregon, Nyara had a 22 pts/12 reb performance in her first game. Germany clearly lost to brilliant Hungary, while Spain was upset by Serbia 58-47 after a shocking Q3.

Edit: Nyara Sabally injury doesn't seem such bad as reported yesterday, she was today with the team, obviously not suited up to play.

Amazing comeback of Italy against previously unbeaten and reigning champ Belgium, after trailing over 30' in the game. Italy's narrow win (55-53) anyway ensures Belgium the first seeding in the group, followed by Italy and Croatia. U17 Alessandra Orsili best of Italian team.
After a preliminary round plenty of up and down results, France is the only unbeaten team so far. Very open tournament indeed, with no clear favorites.

Historic qualification of Germany to the U19 WC after disposing of Czech Republic in the last QF. Total control of the boards by German team, led by another double-double of back-to-action Nyara Sabally.
Latvia beat Russia leading from Q2 by a narrow margin but with result never in real danger. Aleksa Gulbe (LAT) and Darya Ignatova (RUS) on top today.
Spain edged Belgium by one in the best tournament's game so far, for intensity and quality of play. Either team could have won, but Belgium had its top players in foul trouble and lost sniper guard Eva Hamboursin (5/5 threes) in the final moments. Excellent game of U17 Raquel Carrera (ESP) as well.
Deserved win of Hungary over disappointing France 69-61. Hungary with virtually the same U17 WC team took advantage of France fouls with a nearly perfect FT shooting. France to miss the SF for the first time since many years.
For today's losers there's still one spot available for the U19 WC.

Spain-Germany will be the (unusual) final and Belgium-Czech Republic will battle for the last U19 WC spot and the 5th place. Spain trailed in the first half against Hungary making a good Q3 comeback to take a narrow win 57-54. Wide margin victory of Germany over Latvia 66-37. Both teams looked off target on shooting but German girls were better on offensive ebounding taking many more shots. Luise Geiselsoder led the way for the winners with 15 points.

Germany is the well deserved new champ (1st time ever) beating Spain 67-54. Always ahead, despite losing Nyara Sabally by mid Q2 again for injury (knee), Germany never relinquished and closed the 1st half on a comfortable 43-24 lead. Spain wasn't able to stop the excellent inside shooting of Leonie Fiebich (22 pts), Luise Geiselsoder and of Sabally in the 1st half.
Hungary finished 3rd edging Latvia in an ugly game, while Belgium won the last ticket for U19 WC overwhelming a weak Czech Republic.

            All-Star Five:
            N. Sabally, GER (MVP)
            L. Fiebich, GER
            M. Pendande, ESP
            A. Gulbe, LAT
            B. Angyal, HUN
