  • 2018 FIBA Americas U18 Women's Championship (Aug 1-7)

    Draw was finally completed yesterday:

    Group A
    United States
    Argentina
    Puerto Rico
    Chile

    Group B
    Canada
    Mexico
    Colombia
    El Salvador

Weaker tournament with Brazil still suffering the effects of their suspension. In their absence, Argentina dominated the last year's South American U17 championship. Mexico beat Puerto Rico in the Centrobasket final.

USA roster. They had to make three changes from the original roster due to school commitments:

The 2018 USA Women’s U18 National Team includes: Aijha Blackwell (Whitfield School/Berkeley, Mo.); Jenna Brown (The Lovett School/Smyrna, Ga.); Desiree Caldwell (Byron P. Steele II H.S./Cibolo, Texas); Maori Davenport (Charles Henderson H.S./Troy, Ala.); Nazahrah Hillmon-Baker (Gilmour Academy/Cleveland, Ohio); Rhyne Howard (Bradley Central H.S./Cleveland, Tenn.); Ashley Joens (Iowa City H.S./Iowa City, Iowa); Olivia Nelson-Ododa (Winder-Barrow H.S./Winder, Ga.); Anaya Peoples (Schlarman H.S./Danville, Ill.); Sedona Prince (Liberty Hill H.S./Liberty Hill, Texas); NaLyssa Smith (East Central H.S./Converse, Texas); and Christyn Williams (Central Arkansas Christian School/Little Rock, Ark.).

This is the remnants of the disappointing U16/17 group from a couple years ago, so it will be interesting to see how they perform.

Canada's 20 players selected for tryouts and training camp (14-28 July):

Niyah Becker, Kiandra Browne, Roxanne Makolo and Christine Morra are among the few prospects known (at least to me), but maybe someone will shine at the tryouts and Mexico City tournament. Top prospect Laeticia Amihere (born 2001) isn't in the junior rosters anymore, probably launched at higher level (Sr NT).

Colombia has some players from their U17 team too. Minsk to Mexico City in three days is a tough turnaround, I wonder if they will rest their U17 players in their opening games against the US and Canada.

USA beat Canada 72-42 in a scrimmage according to the USAB website.

              Day 1:

              Puerto Rico 74 Chile 69
              Canada 73 Colombia 49
              USA 87 Argentina 42
              Mexico 88 El Salvador 48

USA very sloppy on offense, but turned up the defensive intensity after a slow start.

Mexico playing without their top player in this age group, Sofia Payan, who scored 21.2 ppg at last year's Centrobasket.

Not in Division A, maybe in Div B but it's still too early to know as tournament is slated for late October.

                  Day 2:

                  USA 115 Chile 39
                  Canada 81 El Salvador 52
                  Argentina 79 Puerto Rico 60
                  Colombia 88 Mexico 78

US looked sharper today, although Chile didn't put up much resistance after the first 5 minutes.

Mayra Caicedo, who played big minutes for the senior team at the CAC games recently, scored 30 points to lead Colombia over the hosts.

                    Day 3:

                    Argentina 82 Chile 56
                    Colombia 80 El Salvador 48
                    USA 103 Puerto Rico 59
                    Canada 65 Mexico 54

Not the happiest win for the US, as Sedona Prince was stretchered off the court after landing awkwardly in the third quarter. Twitter reports are that she broke her leg. Christyn Williams also didn't play tonight.

Really unfortunate getting so badly injured for Prince, she had imo progressed a lot since the U16/17 cycle and was substantially contributing to the U18 team so far. Hope she will recover healthy soon.
Prince is one of the few capable of dunking decently (at least in warmups), here's with the current U18 team preceeded by teammate Nelson-Ododa.

Broken leg injury unfortunately confirmed for Prince:

Best wishes for a full recovey.

Easy win by wide margin as expected of US team against undersized El Salvador, 87-27. Too much slow down from the winners in the 2nd half, anyway holding ESA to just 8 points. Williams did play but performed below her usual standard.

Yeah, it felt like a practice game.

                            Quarterfinal Scores:

                            USA 87 El Salvador 27
                            Colombia 85 Puerto Rico 58
                            Argentina 89 Mexico 62
                            Canada 98 Chile 52

Colombia continues their great run, following their U17 WC qualification and CAC Games gold with their first U19 WC qualification.

                              Semifinals:

                              USA 83 Colombia 47
                              Canada 77 Argentina 71

Uninspiring performance by the US although they opened up the margin in the fourth quarter. Halfcourt offense just isn't very good and they create offense from their defense. In the other semifinal Argentina came back from a double-digit deficit to tie the game at 66, but Canada pulled it out in the end.

                              Classification:

Puerto Rico 70 El Salvador 56
                              Chile 71 Mexico 69
