    Big Week for Small Countries

    It's European Championship for Small Countries time:

    Men

    Day 1
    Gibraltar 102 Moldova 96 (OT) (Group A)
    Malta 96 Andorra 64 (Group B)
    Norway 88 San Marino 48 (Group A)

    Ireland is the remaining team in Group B. Moldova's Vladislav Solopa scored 44 points in a losing cause. FIBA website indicates that Norway hasn't fielded a senior team in official competition since 2001, but they had no trouble handling the hosts.

    Women

    Day 1
    Denmark 96 Malta 58 (Group A)
    Luxembourg 71 Cyprus 49 (Group B)
    Norway 73 Ireland 62 (Group A)
    Gibraltar 70 Moldova 64 (Group B)

    Denmark hasn't played a FIBA competition in years, but on paper they have the most talented team in the tournament and they started with a dominant win over the defending champs. Hosts Ireland disappointed an enthusiastic home crowd with a third-quarter collapse against Norway.

    Malta wrapped up Group B, while Norway took the driver's seat in Group A.

    Women
    Norway 56 Cyprus 54
    Denmark 116 Gibraltar 33
    Luxembourg 70 Ireland 47
    Malta 122 Moldova 32

    Norway and Luxembourg locked up semifinal spots, while the hosts are eliminated after just two games. Denmark continued to dominate, while Malta should beat Gibraltar tomorrow to advance.

          Sam Deguara's 24 points and 14 rebounds led Malta to their first championship.

          Denmark was ahead 55-22 at halftime. South Florida's Maria Jespersen led the way with 23 points.
