Bracket is almost set. Canada vs. France is the big one. Winner goes to the round of 8, and gets to avoid the US until the final.
US looks vulnerable though. But they get to avoid Canada and Australia until the final.

China has never beaten Japan "A" in an official game since 2011 (0-5 record or something). But just last week they finally beat Japan in a tuneup game. The 19-year-old giant Han Xu may just be the difference, especially defensively. Kid (hasn't played professionally) has some bad habits and poor endurance but is incredibly gifted.

Suddenly the bracket looks very favorable for the US. Defense and injuries still an issue but if they keep scoring 100 points it won't matter. Griner looked good.

Great to see breakthrough wins for Canada and Belgium, hopefully they can duplicate them in the quarterfinals.

Why is Fujioka playing such limited minutes for Japan? I thought she was their top player in the Asian championships.

China and Japan both shooting close to 60% from the 3, WTF? This may be the highest scoring game of the tournament.

Why is the Chinese coach still playing Sun Mengran this much? Sun is a good player in certain situations (vs. most European teams for example), but she has already showed 4 times that she is worthless vs. Japan.

Nigeria and Greece at halftime 31-26 Nigeria. Getting 2012 flashbacks...

Yep 2012 flashbacks, Nigeria wins by 1 and goes on to play the USA.

That will always be the greatest game in the history of this board.

Spain very shaky against Senegal before pulling away in the fourth quarter.

Hmm.... Nigeria looks capable of a major upset

The Nigerian coach Otis Hughley is American. Strangely, there's almost no information about him online, but he coached Chinese Taipei women's NT back in 2015. That year they did pretty well, not record-wise, but really challenged Japan in the semi (I think they only lost by a few points, while Japan beat China by 35 or something in the final.)

Nigeria only scored 17 in the second half. Stewart and Griner too tall/long-armed and overall US just too good on the boards.

China vs. Australia next. China lost by 30 in a tuneup game earlier this month (54-84) so expectations are low, but China has been playing well. Nobody expects Li Yueru and Han Xu to stop Cambage (I suspect Li Yueru will foul out in 3 quarters), but if they play aggressively on offense, China's perimeter players will be able to make things closer.

It's the same problem teams face with the Men's USA, you can't try to out 'athletic' the US, they can play that game too and more often than not they're going to dominate.

US has the most talent no doubt, but the offense is not very convincing. Australia just dismantled China from start to finish. Having watched both games (and the China-US game), I believe Australia will beat U.S. in the final, probably even convincingly.

Hopefully the US got their bad offensive game out of the way today because they would have been in real trouble against a team that could score. Worst offensive showing against a non-Russia opponent in many years. Got very little from the guards once again, even less than usual since Taurasi had a poor game.

Is there a reason why Sue Bird is still playing? Is it really difficult to find a replacement for her or she’s simply still very good at 37 years of age?

She just had an excellent WNBA season and her team won the championship.

She still has good passing abilities and (obviously) leadership. Not easy to replace but younger valuable guards are missing here (Diggins-Smith, C. Gray). Transition from old to new looks a major issue for backcourt, imo.

Down by 13 at half, China outscored Canada 42-23 in the second half for a hard-fought victory. Switching to zone made all the difference.

It further confirms Australia's dominance. Spain didn't really beat Canada until the last quarter while China looked like 3rd graders against Australia (for at least 37 of the 40 minutes).
