  • Norway and Small Countries Tournament

I was viewing the draws for some tournaments and I realised Norway is competing in 2018 FIBA European Championship for Small Countries. Other countries like San Marino and Gibraltar are understandable but why is Norway there? Actually Ireland is also there. What makes you a small country? Why Kosovo or Lliechtenstein isn`t there for example

Very simply because Norway senior men's national team has been inactive since the 2011 Nordic Championship in Sweden, and now they have to start from the bottom all over again.

The FIBA European Championship for Small Countries being the lowest-ranked tier of the biannual FIBA EuroBasket competition organized by FIBA Europe, Norway has to start from there.

Having made it to the final of the 2016 championship, Armenia & Andorra gained the right to participate in the group phase of the final stage of the European Championship. However, Andorra didn't exercise this right.

Kosovo* is a lex specialis case in many areas, including basketball. A particular case that derogates from the general rule, as determined by the USA and its allies in the West and the Muslim world which supported the recognition of Kosovo as an independent state from Serbia.

Liechtenstein is not a member of FIBA and does not have a national team. I guess that you have confused Liechtenstein with Luxembourg.

The size of the country and the popularity, or rather the lack of the popularity of the game should I say, define the concept of Small Countries. The purpose of this competition is before everything else the promotion of basketball in these countries. Victories, even against weak opponents are always better than disastrous defeats against far better ones to promote basketball in the local media.

By the way, 2 days ago the current best Norwegian baller Karamo Jawara signed to a 2nd division team in Spain.

Iberostar Palma de Mallorca (LEB Gold) signed 27-year old 6'8 Norwegian power forward Karamo Jawara (1991).

He started the season at Cambados Cidade Europea do Vino 2017 in the LEB Silver. In 16 games he had 12.0ppg, 9.8rpg, 2.2apg and 1.1spg this season.

The last season Jawara played at Doxa Pefkon in Greek A2 where in 32 games he recorded 12.2ppg, 7.7rpg (5th in the league) and 2.4apg.

The list of the past achievements is quite long as among others Jawara's team won MEAC Regular Season for two years in a row (2014 and 2015), and he was also voted All-MEAC 2nd Team back in 2015 at his college time.

Jawara represented Norway at the World University Games in Kazan (Russia) 5 years ago.

He has played also professionally in Romania (UBT Cluj Napoca), Greece (Apollon Patras) and Norway (Froya Basket).

Jawara attended North Carolina Central until 2015 and it is his 3rd season as a professional player.

Minnesota Gophers' 7'0" redshirt center Matz Stockman (1995), who is in need of playing time after 3 seasons of bench warming under Rick Pitino at Louisville and a sit-out 2017-18 season due to NCAA transfer rules in Minneapolis, should be eager to take part to this event in view of getting ready the last season of his college career. His frame and length could be useful at this level.
