Antigua squad. Some of these guys are old.

Veterans Lennox “Termite” McCoy, Bryan “Hollywood” Matthew and Mario “Axel” Davis headline the selection of what is a team seemingly balanced with youth and experience.

Xavier Meade, Kareem Edwards, Adonis Humphreys, Kwame Brathwaite, Cohen DeSouza, Clinton Joshua (overseas-based), Vivian “Boast” Destin, Selassie Brathwaite and Ernest Scott (overseas-based) are all in the 12-member line-up. Kenroy Telemaque is the 13th man.

            Guyana

The team which is coached by Junior Hercules, features Stanton Rose (Captain), Harold Adams, Orland Glasgow, Shane Webster, Ray Victor, Anthony Moe, Travis Burnett, Felix Hamilton, Travis Belgrave, Denzel Devonish, Timothy Thompson and Kevon Wiggins.

On the management side, Dennis Clarke will serve as the Assistant Coach, while Nigel Hinds will act as the Manager…..
Young team--the captain Rose is just 18 years old, and Wiggins has put up big scoring numbers (on losing teams) in recent youth tournaments. Moe has played professionally(?) in El Salvador the last couple years.

              Montserrat

The Montserrat-based players are Kerrel Silcott, Nichon Weekes, Jamaul Wade, Vachel Murraine, Jenzel Skerrit, Dave Williams Jr. and Shaquan Wade.

They will be joined by players Immanuel Bradshaw, Kenneth White, Darius Browne, Chad Kirnon and Darren O’Garro.
All I got is Chad Kirnon getting arrested along with a former England cricketer for smuggling cocaine onto an airplane a decade ago. Skerritt may have played some low-level college basketball a long time ago.

South American and Central American qualifiers were not held in February as originally announced. It seems they might be in July?

                Central American schedule (provisional)
                10 Jul Group A - Belize - Guatemala
                10 Jul Group B - Costa Rica - Nicaragua
                12 Jul Group A - El Salvador - Guatemala
                12 Jul Group B - Honduras - Nicaragua
                15 Jul Group A - El Salvador - Belize
                15 Jul Group B - Honduras - Costa Rica
                17 Jul Group A - Guatemala - Belize
                17 Jul Group B - Nicaragua - Costa Rica
                20 Jul Group A - Guatemala - El Salvador
                20 Jul Group B - Nicaragua - Honduras
                22 Jul Group A - Belize - El Salvador
                22 Jul Group B - Costa Rica - Honduras
                26 Jul Final 1st Leg - 1st Group A - 1st Group B
                29 Jul Final 2nd Leg - 1st Group B - 1st Group A

Haven't seen a South American schedule anywhere.

Outside of the heavy-hitters, I don't know much about teams from the Caribbean region. Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Is., Dominican Rep., and occasionally the Bahamas emerge from this region year after year. I'd like to see somebody new, perhaps an Antigua, start pushing their way through. The sport needs new countries to help continue its growth in popularity.

Haiti has some potential with their large North American diaspora, if they can keep their program going. Sad to see Jamaica absent.

                    Day 1 results:

                    Haiti 78 Barbados 62
                    Antigua 91 Bermuda 78
                    Guyana 93 Grenada 64
                    Suriname 80 St. Lucia 61

Haiti made a triumphant return to international competition behind 33 points from UNC-Wilmington's Jeantal Cylla.

                      Day 2:

                      Antigua 87 Montserrat 66
                      Barbados 87 Bermuda 78
                      Guyana 104 St. Vincent 102 (2 OT)
                      Suriname 69 Grenada 67

Respectable debut by Montserrat against one of the tournament favorites...I think this is their first FIBA tournament.

Bermuda is down to six players after half their team was declared ineligible following the first game. Chris Crumpler scored 33 in a losing cause.

Teenager Stanton Rose went for 41 points (9 threes) in Guyana's wild win over St. Vincent. Wonder if he has any options for playing in the US>

Suriname won on Gylan Watalameo's buzzer-beater after Grenada's Jonathan Williams had hit three free throws to tie the game.

Highlight game on Day 3 will be Antigua-Barbados, with the Bajans probably needing a win to keep their semifinal hopes alive. That group looks a lot tougher than Suriname's group, but who knows in this tournament.

                        Day 3:

                        Grenada 73 St. Lucia 69
                        Haiti 110 Montserrat 50
                        Antigua 62 Barbados 55
Suriname 88 St. Vincent 86 (OT)

Last night's hero Watamaleo did it again for Suriname, hitting a late three to send the game to overtime. Dancell Leter led the hosts with 33 points and 19 rebounds.

Montserrat racked up an impressive 37 fouls in getting trounced by Haiti.

Antigua-Haiti and Suriname-Guyana tomorrow should decide the group winners.

                          Day 4:

                          Haiti 76 Antigua 59

                          Guyana 83 Suriname 72

Still one day of group play remaining but the semifinals are pretty much set as Haiti-Suriname and Guyana-Antigua.

                            Day 5:

                            Barbados 109 Montserrat 47
                            Grenada 91 St. Vincent 86
                            Bermuda 20 Haiti 0
                            Guyana 85 St. Lucia 70

Haiti beat Bermuda 96-60 but now it looks like they have forfeited their games and will play St. Lucia for ninth place? Eligibility issue?

                              9th Place
                              Haiti 100 St. Lucia 62

                              5th-8th Place
                              Grenada 88 Montserrat 57
                              St. Vincent 76 Bermuda 62

                              Semifinals
                              Guyana 76 Barbados 71
                              Antigua 76 Suriname 73

So Haiti had to forfeit because of eligibility issues with their US-born players. Articles indicate that they would like to appeal to the CAS but with FIBA's rather arbitrary regulations regarding dual nationals they are probably out of luck. I don't understand how these things aren't taken care of before the tournament. Crazy thing is that they had to go ahead and play the ninth place game with their apparently ineligible players.
