after 14 years or more, Iran basketball federation now has a new president, Mashhoon did great for Iranian basketball but his last few years were terrible and the change was necessary .

now there are serious rumors that Samad Nikkhah will be invited to the national team once again. not sure if he accepts this but he showed interest before.

with the new federation in charge, they announced a new coach "Mehran Shahinab" !!! he will coach the team until 2018 Jakarta Asian Games

and they called up 15 players for the World Cup qualifiers

      Aren Davoudi (Tabriz)
      Sajjad Mashayekhi (Petrochimi)
      Farid Aslani (Naft)
      Saeid Davarpanah (Petrochimi)
      Navid Rezaeifar (Mahram)
Samad Nikkhah Bahrami (Nanjing Monkey King - China)
      Mohammad Jamshidi (Naft)
      Arsalan Kazemi (Petrochimi)
      Oshin Sahakian (Petrochimi)
      Mohammad Hassanzadeh (Naft)
      Navid Niktash (Petrochimi)
Hamed Haddadi (Sichuan Blue Whales - China)
      Asghar Kardoust (Tabriz)
      Rouzbeh Arghavan (Tabriz)
      Mohammad Mirzaei (Petrochimi)

I would drop Aslani, Mirzaei and Niktash for the final 12. let's see what will happen

alongside Samad NB, we also have Davoudi, Kardoust and Davarpanah in the list again, they all played great in the superleague. Aren, Kardoust and Arghavan helped Tabriz to win the super league today. they beat Mahram 3-2 in the final.

interesting to see Samad in the same team with Hassanzadeh and Kazemi. considering their past problems, I hope they can find a way to play together.

btw Behnam Yakhchali broke his hand in superleague semifinal and missed these two games.

Oshin Sahakian announced retirement from the Iran NT at the age of 32. since 2007 he was a key player and helped the "Golden generation" winning so many medals in Asia

Why is Samad Bahrami not in the Iran roster for the game vs. Japan tonight?

Has he already retired from the National team?
"A king may move a man, a father may claim a son, but that man can also move himself, and only then does that man truly begin his own game. Remember that howsoever you are played or by whom, your soul is in your keeping alone, even though those who presume to play you be kings or men of power, when you stand before God, you cannot say, 'But I was told by others to do thus,' or that virtue was not convenient at the time. This will not suffice." - King Baldwin IV

He had some personal things to do in US, there were rumors he will retire after the Philippines game in Tehran but he didn't do anything special after the game, so people assume he is not retired yet. even though he stayed quiet about the whole retirement story. rumors came from his interview before the Asian Games where he said he is thinking about that seriously but he didn't give an exact date.

Things don't look good for Iran before the next window. and I think they simply gave up trying for the next 2 games . both away games against Philippines and Australia.

after the previous window. guys inside the federation talked some nonsense about the players and they reacted badly. even though things look under control now but maybe it's just a calm before storm. they invited 20 players for this window and Arsalan Kazemi is not in the list. first everybody thought because he is injured but apparently that's not the case. this is kind of a punishment. Hamed Haddadi is still injured and clubless .he is in the list but the chance of him playing in next window is very low. even if he plays he is not in good shape. not a sure thing even if he wants to play after what happened. Samad NB is still in US and it's not clear if he is going to play or not. and we just heard today that Sajjad Mashayekhi got injured in a league games and will miss the next window for sure.

here is the list of 20 invited players

                1. Amir Hossein Azari
                2. Rouzbeh Arghavan
                3. Mohammad Reza Bahramzad
                4. Mohammad Torabi
                5. Mohammad Jamshidi
                6. Hamed Haddadi
                7. Mohammad Hassanzadeh
                8. Hamed Hosseinzadeh
                9. Aren Davoudi
                10. Navid Rezaeifar
                11. Keivan Riaei
                12. Amir Sedighi
                13. Aaron Geramipoor
                14. Sajjad Mashayekhi (they announced the list before his injury)
                15. Rasoul Mozaffari
                16. Salar Monji
                17. Meisam Mirzaei
                18. Samad Nikkhah Bahrami
                19. Behnam Yakhchali
                20. Mohammad Yousefvand

this will be Geramipoor's debut for the NT. he can't enter Iran (because then he can't leave) for now he is only going to play in games outside of Iran.
some people were expecting to see Mehdi Kamrani in the list. after not playing pro basketball for a year . he is back playing for Chemidor Club . he looks good but maybe still not ready for the NT level. the same goes to my favorite player "Arman Zangeneh"

12 man roster for the 5th window

Arghavan, Torabi, Hassanzadeh, Hosseinzadeh, Jamshidi, Davoudi, Rezaeifar, Riaei, Sedighi, Mozaffari, Mirzaei and Yakhchali.

they are going to Qatar and Geramipoor will join the team there he is apparently a bit injured, if he is technically and physically good enough, he will replace one of those 12 players.

this is probably even weaker than the team which lost to Iraq ! they are going to lose both games for sure. Haddadi and Samad NB didn't even show up for the camp. they are some problems inside the team.

thanks but we are not qualified yet. at least not on paper. still a 3 way tie break between Iran, Philippines and Japan are possible. unlikely but possible.

btw I hope you don't regret those Zaid Abbas's FTs in the first round at the end of the qualifiers.

Nope, there is no Way that Philippines ties with Iran cause even if you lose the last 2 and PHI their 2 games and have a draw you will make it since you won the Home & Away games against them.. so a 3rd Place is already gauaranteed for Iran.
Btw i read the news on the Official Website of the Iranian Federation.
Unfortunately we are regretting it now but hopefully our guys can make it in the next window up and Qualify.

no if Japan beat Iran and lose to Qatar. and if Philippines win the next two games. all 3 teams will be tied on 7-5 record. and all 3 teams will be tied 2-2 on head to head record between them , then we will go to the points difference between 3 teams. not guaranteed yet

even if you check FIBA. they don't mark Iran as a qualified team
The official website of FIBA, the International Basketball Federation, and the governing body of Basketball. FIBA organises the most famous and prestigious international basketball competitions including the FIBA Basketball World Cup, the FIBA World Championship for Women and the FIBA 3x3 World Tour. The website features live and on demand videos, basketball news, over 70,00 players profile and thousands of teams profiles, schedules and statistics of all FIBA Events as well as results and statistics from over 80 national basketball leagues.

but the funny thing is that all media here and also our federation think we are already qualified. we will finish 4th in the group if for example such results happen

                              Philippines beating Qatar and Kazakhstan
Japan beating Iran by more than 8pts
                              Japan losing to Qatar

these are not completely impossible results. specially if we play relax thinking we are already qualified. and if Japan beat us. they have no reason to play serious against Qatar. they can lose that one.

and if Japan beat Iran by less than 8pts. Philippines won't be higher than 4th in the group no matter what.
