  • Oldest active players

There's not actually an age beyond which a player can be determined to be past the normal/average active basketballer career, but perhaps 38 can be determined as that limit.
So post those who pass the average and can be considered basketball phenomena and maniacs
    Here's one:

Dan Gay - 46 years old, currently plays for Scavolini Pesaro (Italian Lega A)

Estonia's oldest basketballer WAS center Margus Metsak. He retired at the age of 45 last year. He played in Poland and Germany during his career. This year he started as assistant coach for his longtime club.

Kevin Willis was the oldest active player in the NBA last season. He played for Dallas Mavericks, but only in 5 games. I guess he retired after last season, at least from NBA. But to play in NBA at the age of 44 is impressive.

Nat Hickey of the 1947-48 Providence Steamrollers, at 46, was the oldest player in NBA history. He only appeared in one game that season.

In Argentina, there are a few cases:

-Carlos Colla is Belgrano's starting SG at age 40, and a team symbol having played there for 10 consecutive years, always above 10 ppg.

-Donald Jones is a naturalized American/Argentinean who has played here for more than 20 years. He's 45 now, but still scores 13 ppg for a second division pro team. In fact, he's so old that his son was part of a cadet national team preselection this year.

-in 2004, shooting guard Edgard Merchant (another naturalized American) was signed by Libertad to play the Liga Sudamericana, filling in for an injured player. Not only he played, but he was the top scorer in the win that qualified Libertad to quarterfinals, scoring 21 points in 7/7 threes (he scored 48% of threes in that tournament). He was 45 years old at that time.

Veljko Petranović still active player at the age of 49. Though, playing in second Slovenian League, but he played in first League two years ago at the age of 47.

He scored 100 points (he played only 3 quarters!) at the age of 44 playing in a Cup game with first league team against some lower league team.

Does the "joke" American minor league ABA count?

                            Takers sign 80-year-old player 03/16/07

Houston, TX. The American Basketball Association (ABA) has always been known for its creativeness, out-of-the-box, unusual, innovative, ground-breaking initiatives. Larry D. Leonard II, the owner of the ABA Houston Takers has just added to the league's mystique with the announcement on Thursday that Mr. Howard Judah will take the floor as a Houston Taker for the 2007-2008 season.

According to Leonard, "Mr. Judah has an awesome basketball resume and has been a consistent winner." "And one other thing," added Leonard, "Mr. Judah is 80 years old and is probably the oldest professional basketball player in history. So, the ABA gets the tallest player ever - 7'9" Sun Ming Ming and the oldest player ever - Howard Judah. It doesn't get any better than this."

The Houston Takers are looking to turn things around for next season and it seems as if Howard Judah will be the spark they need to get them heading in the right direction. For more information, visit www.houstontakers.com or www.abalive.com.
Although, I'm not sure if he ever played. (Even if he did there is no info as always with ABA.)
