  • 2017 FIBA Women's Afrobasket

This year's edition opened today in Bamako, MLI.
The official website of the FIBA Women's Afrobasket 2017. Competition schedule, results, stats, teams and players profile, news, games highlights, photos, videos and event guide.

Angola, Egypt, Mali, Nigeria and Senegal should be the top teams competing for the two final spots at the 2018 WC. Mozambique, Ivory Coast and maybe Cameroon are there hoping to build up some upsets. Little known Tunisia is challenging host Mali right now.

In today's first games Angola topped Cameroon 78-56 with a fine performance of experienced guard Italee Lucas, 28 pts (7/12 FG3) and 6 rebounds. Interestingly, former North Carolina star Lucas was a member of the US U18 & 19 teams that won gold at the Fiba Americas (2006) and WC (2007). She took the Angolan nationality in 2015. In today's game Cameroon was led by Tia Weledji, an incoming senior guard at Princeton.

Cameroon itself and Nigeria have several players with NCAA experience.

In today big game, host Mali was upset by Angola, once again led by Italee Lucas (21 points) despite getting 2 early fouls. Mali didn't exploit its advantage on rebounding and Angola shot better from the outside.
Cameroon still winless, lost today to Ivory Coast after a disappointing performance of its two best shooters Lonlack and Weledji.

Impressive win of Nigeria over Egypt 106-72, securing a spot in qf. Big Evelyn Akathor (Kentucky 2017) was outstanding with 24 pts (10/12 FG), 13 reb, 5 asts, 3 stls and 3 blocks. Former UCLA Atonye Nyinginfa also finished with a double double, 15 pts, 12 reb, plus 5 asts and 5 stls.
Senegal and Angola too are unbeaten after edging Congo DR and Tunisia in close games.

Nigeria won its third Afrobasket title defeating Senegal in the final. Both nations have qualified for the last spots at the 2018 WC.
Winners were led by young center Evelyn Akhator (Kentucky 2017), while Astou Traore topped all scorers for the losers.
Nigeria had survived a real scare in sf edging Mali by one point. Hosts (3rd) finished on a high note but missed the qualification they would have maybe deserved.

        All-Star five:
        Astou Traore (Sen) MVP
        Evelyn Akhator (Ngr)
        Leia Dongue (Moz)
        Naignouma Coulibaly (Mli)
        Italee Lucas (Ang)
