I see that FIBA has now corrected the point totals in the standings. While teams get one point for a loss, forfeits yield zero points.

The talent is there - the structural issues with poor NBA participation, media attention, poor management and coaching are still there but they seem to be moving in the right direction.
Great answer mojo. I quoted optimistic part. You have plenty of talent and with time you should build a solid BB culture.

Jamal Murray with a 48 point game.
Shai Gilgeous Alexander starting the season really well - very impressive so far. Got his first start for the Clippers last night.
Dillon Brooks started slow, but is now playing well the last few games.
Nik Stauskas is even having a career resurgence! (I wonder if he will ever play for Canada again?)

And a very interesting NCAA season kicks off tonight - with, by my count, no less than a dozen Canadian NBA prospects and a solid chance of 3-5 drafted in the 2019 first round.

Apparently the lesson the Argies learned from the AmeriCup final was not to build a 20-point lead in the first half.

IMO USA really missing inside presences who can do what Warney and Hilliard did for them in the AmeriCup game. Also team defense sucked once Argentina settled into the game, but that's not too surprising.

No paint presence, no one who can score in the paint, and no chemistry. Just a mess. The bright side is having Panama in our back pocket for qualification or hoping they play much better vs. Uruguay.

Yeah, it's a free game for us.

Also, painful last-second Puerto Rico losses to weak opponents are the best kind of Puerto Rico loss.

At this point I've accepted this loss and just want to see them build toward Uruguay.

There might be a theoretical scenario where Argentina gets slaughtered by PR and the US in the last window and somehow finishes fourth in a tiebreaker, but realistically they've qualified, so congratulations to them.

The dream scenario, of course, is if Panama beats Mexico and PR, the US beats Uruguay, and then we get to throw the last Panama game

Even in that scenario they own the tiebreaker over Uruguay, they're fine.

Yeah, I was thinking a four-way tie at 8-4 between ARG, USA, URU, and PUR, but in that case ARG would be 3-3 head to head while PUR would be 2-4, so the point differential wouldn't matter. But maybe they could lose out in a three-way tie with URU and PUR if they lost to PUR by something like 100 points? Not going to happen, in any case.

Default Venezuela Group F Leaders And One Step Away From Classification

Key triumph for Venezuela that allows them to place a foot in the qualifying line for the World Cup in China 2019, this time against their old rival of Canada with whom they have played several important games and from which in almost all these commitments has come out successful the national team of Venezuela.

Venezuela with 8 victories and only one defeat is the absolute leader of group F and thanks to their defense and collectivity have been able to find the victories in this new modality of competition in the windows FIBA for the classification to the world.

It is important for our nation that Venezuela returns to the elite of basketball to face the best in the world and this is only won with work and effort and this is demonstrated by the Vinotinto team, who had already qualified for the Rio Olympics in 2015 also defeating their rival Canada.

Venezuela beat Canada 84-76 in a game that was very close from the beginning, the game of the South Americans was extremely collective, which highlighted: Jose Vargas 15 Pts. 2 Ast. Dwight Lewis 14 Pts. 3 Reb. Gregory Vargas 13 Pts. 6 Reb. Jhornan Zamora 12 Pts. Gregory Echenique 10 Pts. 12 Reb. Nestor Colmenares 10 Pts. 7 Reb.

Excellent performance and victory of Venezuela that leaves them one step away from being in the world of China 2019.

I can’t think of a team better advantaged by this awful qualification system than Venezuela. It must be nice to be able to floor the best team possible during these in season windows not to mention to have guys together for weeks of practice that have been playing together for years. Was the entire Venezuela team made up of domestic league players?(except 1 I think). Instead most teams are cobbling together a patchwork of players from all over the world and getting two days of practice together. No Canadian fan expected a road win the other night considering the circumstances. And I would not call this a rivalry. It is more of reminder of the ridiculousness of FIBA to most.

Anyways - congratulations and good luck in the World Cup and I hope Venezuela represents the America’s well for once. Let’s see if Venezuela can stay within 30 points of any half decent basketball nation fielding anything close to their “A” team. Hopefully it is not another awful embarrassing showing like the Olympics.

USA wins 78-70, way more of a headache than it needed to be, but USA qualified for China.

US were lucky, Uruguay was dynamite from 3 but shit inside the perimeter.

Now to sit back and let other people/teams/countries stress out.

Took everything that Uruguay and FIBA rules and regulations had to throw at us and somehow transformed into a different team in the final five minutes and won anyway.

    RIP Panama

Actually did not realize this till your post, but yes Panama is eliminated. They were WAY WAY WAY more competitive then I thought they'd be, just 2 points away until they could have made it till the last window. Honestly I though they might be the group punching bag, but they've actually out performed Mexico.

    Edit: RIP Mexico
