Talking UAE NT leave for france taining camp

The UAE basketball team have left for a two-week training camp in France in preparation for the Asian qualifiers of the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

The UAE team will play warm-up matches against four French clubs during the tour to gain experience before the Asian qualifiers, which will be held in Japan from July 29 to August 5.

The team will be under the guidance of experienced Serbian coach Zoran Zubcevic, who led the UAE to a gold medal in the Gulf Cup in January.

Salim Al Muttawa, board member of the UAE basketball association, heads the delegation, which includes 12 players - Younis Khamis, Jasim Abdul Redha, Mohammad Mubarak, Ahmad Mussa, Talal Salim, Ayoub Ahmad, Mattar Abdullah, Hasan Ali, Rashid Naser, Saeed Khalfan, Jasim Mohammad and Ali Abbas.

Three key players - Mal Allah Rashid, Qasim Mohammad and Ebrahim Khalfan, couldn't travel due to personal commitments.

A squad of 16 players, which had been reduced to the present number, trained during the past two weeks at the Al Wasl Club.

During the 10-day stint in Lyon, they are expected to play a couple of warm-up matches against local clubs and some of the African teams preparing for the African Games to be held in Algiers.

The players and officials are expected back on July 23 and travel two days later to Japan to compete in the championship. UAE are in the same group with hosts Japan, Lebanon and Saudi Arabia.

This Mohammad Mubarak is very popular in the Filipino community here in the UAE because he used to play with some Filipinos here in a pick-up basketball game. he's a high leaper but quite old. if he's the old Mubarak during the 1998 UAE NT. i think he used to guard Johhny Abarrientos in the 1998 Jones Cup when UAE faced RP NT.
