The WNBL has officially become the country’s first-ever professional basketball league in the Philippines just a year after its inception after its main organization NBL got the nod of GAB recently.

NBL executive vice president Rhose Montreal said the focus of the WNBL is to showcase and expose the talents of women’s players from all over the country.

“First things first, we don’t want to sell WNBL by selling skin,” said Montreal during the league’s press conference announcing the GAB approval on Wednesday. “I believe that there is a surplus of talented women ballers in the Philippines and for us, we don’t care about their gender preferences.”

“We don’t care whether they sport a short or long hair. We don’t care whether they wear short shorts or long shorts. We want to sell their skills,” said Montreal.

MANILA, Philippines — The newly minted pro league Women's National Basketball League (WNBL) is set to pick its inaugural rosters of players amid the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Recently getting the pro nod from the Games and Amusement Board, the WNBL announced it will be holding a draft in October this year.

Applications forms for the draft will be posted online as the country continues to battle the coronavirus health crisis.

The WNBL kicked off its inaugural season as an amatuer league in April 2019 and featured seven teams.

The Philippine Air Force claimed the first WNBL title.

Becoming a professional league, the WNBL becomes a premiere destination for women ballers in the country post-college.

Among those who have already expressed interest in joining the new pro league is Gilas Pilipinas Women skipper Jack Danielle Animam.

However, the WNBL will have to wait a little longer before they receive Animam's commitment with a import stint awaiting the five-time UAAP champion in Taiwan.

            • 5’8 guard Vanessa De Jesus

              https://www.spin.ph/basketball/fiba/...ome_featured_1

Gilas Pilipinas head coach Pat Aquino was also present in the virtual media briefing together with coaching staff member Julie Amos, Mark Solano of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP), and Lindy Brown, senior associate director of communications Duke Athletics External Operations.

But at 18 years of age, De Jesus may no longer be eligible to play in FIBA-sanctioned tournaments as per its 16-year eligibility rule that requires a player to prove his or her legal nationality through a passport – of at least three years validity - acquired before turning at age 16.

At the most, the Filipina baller, who loves Filipino food such as lumpia, pansit, adobo, and sinigang, could suit up as a naturalized player.

De Jesus however, could play as a local in FIBA 3x3 tournaments, which has a different set of eligibility rules, and continental tournaments such as the Southeast Asian Games and Jones Cup.

              • Indonesia has a new recruit,6'2 Kim Pierre Louis.
Maybe we should step up our foreign recruitment and naturalization as well.

Wag na Chinese. Since, we will be battling a lot with China in Asian qualifiers, I think it is better to look for a candidate from the west. An American,European, Latin American or even African players, but not someone from Asia which can be easily scouted by their former coaches. Maybe a 6'4 power forward/small forward with very good range and very efficient rebounder and defender would do.

We should aiming first beating Taipei and NZL then saka na yung big 4 of Women's circuit (Australia, China, Japan and Korea).. I think we should get a African woman.. It's cheaper than getting naturalized players in US then develop nalang natin.. Or we can use this as advantage that we should under 16 young African girls to live/study here and give them a passport, Unlike men's squad that so much controversy eh our women's side are not so popular to most of people, medianmen, etc.. We can plan properly on women's side than on the men's side..

It may sound a bit opportunistic, but if we could steal a WNBA level player or even a very good European import type player the better, not just because it is cheap.I feel that quality should come first and there are really good players not just Africa. We may even opt to get Brazilians or Canadians who were not able to play for their respective national teams.I think we have another 6'6 Filipino-American recruit who is already eligible (forgot the name) that could play alongside or come off the bench after Jack Animam. If kelly Hardeman can be considered by FIBA as a local after getting naturalized (since she was born in the Philippines), it would be great as well then we could naturalize another player and probably recruit some overseas eligible players to beef up our team some more. By the way, is Kelli Hayes a naturalized player or a local?

Seven-hundred two hopefuls have applied for the first-ever draft of the Women's National Basketball League.

The high turnout forces the league to close its application window earlier, from October 1 to September 22, as Filipinas all over the world submitted their applications.

WNBL Executive Vice President Rhose Montreal expressed her gratitude to each and every dreamer that sent their application forms.

"It's overwhelming," shared Montreal. "We at the WNBL are truly humbled with the number of applications we received. This just shows that we have a lot of talent in women's basketball here in the country."

Well-represented were the three major island groups in the country and, as well as Filipinas living abroad.

Some of the marquee players who threw their names in the draft are Monique Del Carmen, Raiza Palmera-Dy, April Lualhati, Jack Tanaman, Janette Yanez, AJ Gloriani, Tina Deacon, and Fille Claudine Cainglet.

Now, the process to trim down the applicants begins.

Players below 21 years of age are not allowed. Aside from that, the credentials of each player will be the main criteria for making it to the Draft Combine set from October 12 to 16 in Pampanga.

The announcement of the final list that will enter the combine will take place early next week through an online show. The online draft lottery will happen on October 18 while the draft proper takes place on October 30.

Each team will have a 'protect six' list.

On the other hand, teams from the Armed Forces, namely Air Force, Army, and Navy, will not join the draft and must submit their full lineups with each player having been enlisted for a minimum of one year.

Once she gets to Taiwan, Animam will be subjected to a mandatory 14-day quarantine before she can finally blend in with her new squad.

The Malolos, Bulacan native, however, is positive that things can only work out well, believing that she has ample time to build chemistry with her new teammates.

"Saktong sakto lang yung dating ko. May time pa ako for adjustment and para makabuo ng chemistry with the team," she said, with Shih Hsin's first game slated on November 16.

I hope she gets better as her dad is the assistant coach of UP girls. and also, she would not transfer to NU. This will help her be stronger preparing against the powerhouse NU.

EXCITING TIMES for women's basketball team.
