Lady Maroons Regain Form, Blast Fuego Espana in PFF WL

BY JAELLE NEVIN REYES ON DECEMBER 11, 2016 FOOTBALL TIMES

University of the Phil-ippines reentered the winners’ column after beating Fuego Espana FC, 3-0, in the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) Women’s League first round at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium on Saturday.

The Lady Maroons managed to bounce back through the three-goal performance of high scoring standout Mary Rose Obra, who registered her second hat trick of the tournament.

During the game, Obra was off to a hot start in the opening minutes of the contest after connecting deep inside their opposition’s territory in the second minutes.

After conceding early in the game, Fuego Espana reorganized their defense and fortified their back line to prevent a blowout throughout the majority of regulation.

However, the offense of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines champions came alive in the final 10 minutes of the match to secure a victory for their squad.

Proficient scorer Obra struck back-to-back goals in the 85th and 87th minutes, respectively, to extend their advantage to 3-0 before the final whistle.

Consequently, the Ladies of Diliman were handed their first loss of the tournament after being stunned by Outkast FC, 0-2, in their heated meeting last December 3.

PFF Women's League Leads the Charge for Pinay Football

An 11-team league and promising youth players augur well for the female game

    Bob Guerrero
    Published 4:48 PM, December 15, 2016
    Updated 4:48 PM, December 15, 2016

MANILA, Philippines – There may only be a few hundred spectators at any match in Rizal Memorial. There is no sound system, so at times the players playfully hum the FIFA anthem when they take the field. No TV coverage and just a handful of media.

But the 2016 PFF Women's League is part of a quiet revolution in the women's game in the Philippines. Apart from the 5-team UAAP, it's the only 11-a-side, 90-minute senior women's league in Metro Manila and perhaps even in all of the Philippines.

“We have lots of 7-a-side games but the complete performance of a player can only be checked over a long period in a game,” says Let Dimzon, the FEU women's coach.

“I hope PFF will keep this league,” she adds.

First, a few facts about the competition. It's funded through the Women's Development Program of FIFA. Each team, for a bargain-basement registration fee of P15,000, gets free uniforms, socks, and shoes. There are balls thrown in as well. The matches are all held in Rizal Memorial on Saturdays and Sundays.

Since there are 11 teams and it's a double-round robin affair, each side gets 20 matches, with one club getting a bye on a given weekend. The competition will have a break for Christmas then continue into the new year.

All 5 UAAP teams, UP, DLSU, FEU, ADMU and UST, are represented. Two UFL teams, Kaya and Green Archers United, have fielded squads as well as The Younghusband Football Academy, (TYFA), Fuego Espanya, Hiraya, and Outkast. These non-UAAP sides are largely composed of school alumni, former national team players, and recreational players with varying degrees of skill and experience.

One team, Fuego Espanya, reportedly has 5 players who had never played 11-a-side in their lives before this tournament.

The tournament will try to complete its first round before the UAAP early next years since the UAAP doesn't want its athletes plying in other comps while theirs is ongoing. Then after the UAAP, the second round will take place.

Yes, it's true. The PFF is certain of holding a women's senior league next year, but not a men's league, since the Philippines Football League is still not a certainty yet.

It's remarkable to note how hurriedly this league was organized. I'm told that the shoutout for the manager's meeting was given on one day's notice. And yet 6 non-UAAP teams were able to participate. It speaks well about the untapped pool of female players in the country.

The league also gives a second chance for women to continue their football journey after UAAP, which previously was pretty much the highest tier of female football in the country.

“It's a motivation for us old timers to get back into shape and try and compete with the kids,” says Patrice Impelido of Hiraya. Impelido is a Filipina-American who learned soccer in Western Michigan University before playing for the Philippines. She is now an assistant coach with youth national teams.

Lemoran Leads PFF WL Top Scorers

BY JAELLE NEVIN REYES ON DECEMBER 25, 2016 SPORTS

University of Santo Tomas star Charissa Lemoran leads the pack of top scorers after the initial four weeks of action in the first round of the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) Women’s League 2016.

The sophomore Lady Tigress played a vital role in the two-game streak of UST in their first three games, garnering a total of eight goals for the tournament’s fourth seeds.

Lemoran was off to a bright start in the competition after clinching a hat trick against Fuego Espana FC in the lopsided 7-0 victory against the newbie club.

She once again exploded in their second game with an impressive five-goal haul as the Thomasian ladies demolished the young Kaya FC, 8-1, last December 3.

Lemoran Remains PFF Women’s League Top Scorer

BY JAELLE NEVIN REYES ON FEBRUARY 3, 2017 WOMEN SPORTS

University of Santo Tomas (UST) standout Charissa Lemoran emerged as the top scorer of the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) Women’s League going into the mid-season break.

The prolific striker scored 12 goals in five games for the Espana-based Lady Tigresses in the opening round of the tournament.

Lemoran established her dominance early with a hat trick performance in their 7-0 win against Fuego Espana FC at the start of the competition last November 12.

In her second game, Lemoran exploded for five goals in UST’s 8-1 rout of Kaya FC.

In UST’s recent outing, the high-scoring lady booter once again showcased her offensive prowess with a three-goal haul in their 8-1 victory over The Younghusband Football Academy.

Meanwhile, De La Salle University’s Kyra Dimaandal finished second with nine goals while University of the Philippines’ Mary Rose Obra was third with eight.

Philippines Set Sights on New Horizons

            (FIFA.com) 09 Feb 2017

Football is currently enjoying a significant growth spurt across many parts of south-east Asia. The same is true of the Philippines. A sprawling nation comprised of thousands of islands in the western Pacific Ocean, the Philippines boasts a population of 100 million, making it one of the largest in the world. It is a country with enormous potential in the world game.

Change has come quickly to the men’s game in a relatively short space of time. The national team has made significant progress under firstly Michael Weiss and, more recently, Thomas Dooley, the former USA national team skipper. They have reached the AFF Championship (South-east Championship) semi-finals on three successive occasions in recent years, having never previously progressed beyond the group stage.

The Azkals, as they are affectionately known, were also just one match away from qualifying for the 2015 AFC Asian Cup. Meanwhile, at domestic level a new national league is just two months away, while local side Global FC recently became the first Philippines side to compete in the AFC Champions League.

While the same level of growth hasn’t yet been achieved in women’s football, there has been clear evolution. The new women’s league is already three months into its maiden season. Above all though, there is a realistic chance of reaching the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow – qualification to the FIFA Women’s World Cup™.

            Road to riches
Last month’s draw for Asian Zone qualifying revealed the pathway towards France 2019. One ticket to the eight-nation AFC Women’s Asian Cup is available in a group that includes Philippines, Bahrain, Iraq, United Arab Emirates and Tajikistan. Jordan are also in the group for competition purposes, though they qualify automatically as hosts of the 2018 continental event. Of those eight teams competing next year, five will represent the world’s most populous continent in France.

Can the Philippines do it? One person who has a better oversight than most is Marielle Benitez. After 12 years in the national team, and having experienced the 2015 Women’s World Cup qualifiers, Benitez, who still plays in the national competition, is part of the pool of coaches assisting the senior national team and currently manages the U-15 national team. She also somehow manages to find time to tour locally and internationally with the Philippines National Folk Dance Company.

Famous names capable of promoting the cause of women’s football are thin on the ground in the Philippines, but former national team captain Benitez is very much an exception to the rule. She is a well-known TV host covering club and international football, and helps provide a much-needed public profile for a game that has traditionally been some way down the pecking order in terms of popularity.

On Friday the Philippine Women's National team demolished Tajikistan 8-0 in AFC Asian Cup qualifying. It was the third straight blowout win after 4-0 triumphs against the UAE on Monday and Iraq on Wednesday.

The Philippines are in a 6-team qualifying group for the final stage of the AFC Asian Cup in Jordan next year. The Jordanian women are in Group A with the Pinays despite the fact that they have qualified as hosts. Only the top team is supposed to make it out of this pool, and if Jordan finishes on top, the second-place team progresses.

A draw or a victory against Bahrain on Monday and the Philippines will likely ice that second spot no matter what happens in Wednesday's final match against Jordan, unless the Jordanians slip up against Tajikistan on Monday, a long shot. Bahrain are third in the table with 4 points, Jordan walloped them 6-0 and they drew against UAE 1-1.

This plucky bunch of Filipinas has overcome plenty of adversity to get to one win away from a first appearance in the Asian Cup. Attendance in training was spotty because of school and UAAP games. Securing a training ground was not always easy. Preparation time was, as usual, in short supply. But the stars have also aligned for Buda Bautista's side. Here are the factors that have led them here.

Title IX. Yes, the seeds of this amazing week in Philippine women's football were sown on June 23, 1972, when, with a stroke of President Richard Nixon's pen, Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 became law in the United States. Co-authored and introduced by Senator Birch Bayh, (D-Indiana), the portion of the act states that “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.”

That included sports in public schools and colleges that received federal funding. In effect, whatever money spent on boy's sports in this school had to be equal to what was given to women. Since public educational institutions in the states spend a great deal of money on sports like basketball and American football, a similar amount of cash got poured into girl's and women's sports. And one of the most popular women's sports in the states is Soccer.

This is one of the reasons why the USA is a serial world champion in soccer. They won the World Cup in 2015 for a record third time. The American women perform much better than other traditional football powerhouses like Italy and Spain. In the states there is so much public sector support for the game in all levels from grade school to college. Hence generation upon generation of quality female women players, thousands upon thousands of them, are being churned out. And some of these girls just so happen to have Filipino heritage.

On Friday 6 Filipina-Americans took to the field against Tajikistan. Hali Long nodded in a hat trick of headers. Claire Lim served up quality set pieces and so much more. Patrice Impelido, the unretired captain, secured the center of the park. Patricia Tomanon displayed blazing speed on the flanks, even deep into second-half stoppage time. Hanna Parado pulled the strings in midfield. And Eva Madarang once again struck. She is lethal with either foot and apparently with her head too.

The big question for me is this: should the Philippines have its own Title IX? I hope our legislators are taking note.

A Golden Generation of homegrown girls. While the overseas-born Pinays have been stellar, it is apparent that the homegrowns in the lineup are playing near or at the level of the Filipina-Americans.

Irish Navaja's lobbed goal from an acute angle is no fluke. Her coach in DLSU, Hans Smit, says the Bacolodnon does it all the time. Navaja also crossed to Sara Castañeda, who controlled deftly and finished for 4-0. Castañeda is also a DLSU player, a product of De La Salle Zobel.

In the second game Sara scored again, and centerback Dai Dai Dolino from San Carlos City got on the scoresheet as well with a perfect header.

In the 8-0 beatdown versus Tajikistan, Sara's younger sister Anicka got in on the action with a pair of goals, one a rocket from distance that the Tajik keeper could not prevent from going in. Late sub Mary Christine Duran also nodded home for a goal. Duran is from Talisay, just outside of Bacolod.

These are amazing players but in reality only the tip of the iceberg. Because of school commitments and other reasons, a bunch of very experienced quality players were unable to make the team. Absent from the roster were the likes of Molly Manalansan, Kyra Dimaandal, Cristina De Los Reyes, and Natasha Alquiros. Etang Ladero of FEU and now Air Force is another amazing player who wasn't in the team. Ditto for Charissa Lemoran, a prolific scorer for UST.

Kyla Inquig scored a brace as De La Salle University nipped University of Santo Tomas, 2-1, at Rizal Memorial Stadium on Thursday to retain the championship in UAAP Season 80 women's football.

An 80th-minute strike by Inquig followed by several key saves by goalkeeper Tashka Lacson sealed the Lady Archers' back-to-back title romp.

De La Salle is now tied with Far Eastern University for the most number of women's football crowns with 10.

Malditas Earn First 2018 Women’s Asian Cup Win, Thailand Lose to China

                              Kelvin Leong

A second piece of good news for Philippines football as the women’s national team claim their first win at the 2018 AFC Women’s Asian Cup over host nation Jordan.

Following the Azkals’ historical qualification for the 2019 AFC Asian Cup, their female compatriots made it a fortnight to remember in their AFC Women’s Asian Cup Group A match against Jordan.

After a spectacular opening ceremony, the Malditas wasted little time and matched the host nation stride for stride to seal a 2-1 win at the Amman International Stadium.

Jordan opened proceedings in the 11th minute through striker Maysa Jbarah who put the ball past goalkeeper Kearra Bastes-Jones after a lovely ball over the defence from captain Stephanie Al-Naber.

The Malditas came out for the second half refusing to give up and levelled the score on 51 minutes when Jordan centre-back Yasmeen Khair headed into her own net under pressure from Sarina Bolden.
