Malditas Fall to Thailand, Women's World Cup Chances Rest on Fifth-Place Match

    By ABS-CBN Sports on Apr 13, 2018 05:10 AM

The Philippine Women’s National Football Team could not close out the 2018 AFC Women’s Asian Cup with a win, as the fell to Thailand, 3-1 at the King Abdullah II Stadium in Amman, Jordan, Friday morning, Manila time.

With a spot in the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup at stake, Kanjana Sung-Ngoen came up big for Thailand once again, much like she did in the 2014 edition of the Women’s Asian Cup where in she scored twice in the Fifth-Place Match to send Thailand to their first Women’s World Cup berth.

Against the Philippines, Kanjana opened the scoring with a 28th-minute penalty after Malditas’ co-captain Tahnai Annis was whistled for a hand-ball inside the box. Kanjana then doubled Thailand’s lead in the 53rd minute with a strike from inside the box off a cross from the left side.

Less than ten minutes later, Silawan Intamee put Thailand up by three after curling in a free kick from the right side that sailed past Philippine keeper Kearra Bastes-Jones.

Our girls are actually playing pretty good despite the losses. They're simply facing much stronger and experienced opposition. It's going to be tough but we need to beat Korea for fifth place.

Just the highlights. Our girls tried hard, but South Korea is a World Power in Football, even in the Women's Division ...

We will get there soon enough. The Malditas are strong, it's just they were up against world-level opposition. The opponents were just too good.
