I just read on Yahoo! Sports that Antoine Walker signed to play with Guaynabo. Is that true? I read that he was only given a one-month contract because they're afraid he's out of shape.

PUR - Bayamon clinch first win of season

BAYAMÓN (BSN) - Vaqueros de Bayamón eged out Gallitos de Isabela 87-83 to take their win of the season.

The signing of import Robert "Tractor" Traylor paid immediate dividends as he had 18 points, nine rebounds and seven blocks to help the defending champions improve to 1-2 with this road win.

Christian Dalmau had a game-high 30 points in the winning cause while DeMarco Johnson added 13.

Devin Green had a team-best 22 for Gallitos.

Vaqueros got off to a quick start, taking a 10-2 lead three minutes into the game. They were up 26-18 by the end of the opening period with Traylor and Carmelo Lee accounting for six points each.

In the second quarter, Vaqueros continued to rely on some balanced scoring and an 11-2 spurt saw them go up 37-20 with 7:18 left in the half. They maintained that cushion for a 54-37 score at the break, by which stage Traylor had 12 points, Johnson 11 and Dalmau 9.

The hosts though didn’t give up and opened the third quarter with a 13-3 run to get within 57-50 on a free-throw by Green.

Vaqueros made some defensive adjustments and managed to stay in front the rest of the way thanks to their depth and efficiency inside.

Darnell Hinson and Shawn Pruitt each had 19 for Gallitos.

PUR - Puerto Rican League round-up

Complete team effort helps Leones remain unbeaten

PONCE (Baloncesto Superior Nacional) - Leones de Ponce have opened the 2010 BSN season with a 4-0 record thanks to great play from each and everyone of their players, from first to last.

On Thursday, Ponce went to Cabo Rojo, the current home of Indios de Mayagüez, and beat them 71-64.

DerMarr Johnson had a team-high 18 points in the win. Paul Graham scored 19 points and Michael Gale 14 for Indios.

The first quarter finished with the scored tied at six all, setting a league record for points combined (12) in a single quarter. The scoring did pick up from thereon and the visitors went on to claim their third victory in as many games.

Leones then travelled to Guaynabo on Saturday and dominated the Mets 105-86 to improve to 4-0. Ricky Melendez came off the bench to score a game-high 25 points, hitting seven three-pointers. Johnson added 18 while DeAngelo Collins had 16 and Alvin Cruz recorded a double-double with 14 points with 12 assists.

Angel Figueroa scored 20 points and Christopher Vega 19 for Guaynabo.

On Sunday, Cangrejeros de Santurce won their first game of the campaign by edging out Isabela on the road 78-76.

Marquis Gainous scored 21 points, Ricardo Dalmau added 16 while Wilfredo Pagan and Walter Hodge had 14 and 10 respectively for the triumphant visitors.

Shaun Pruitt's game-highs of 25 points and 14 rebounds just weren't enough for the hosts.

Meanwhile, in a BSN finals re-match, Piratas de Quebradillas outlasted Vaqueros de Bayamon 86-82 behind Lee Nailon's 25 points. David Huertas had 19 and Joel Jones Camacho 14.

Javier Mojica went for 25 of his own to lead Bayamon who were without guard Christian Dalmau. The team's leading scorer missed the game with the flu.

The league continues today with San German at Humacao. On Tuesday, the last two undefeated teams clash, as Ponce visit Arecibo and Humacao look for their first win when they play host to Santurce.

I read that Walker is doing just OK. Nothing spectacular. He had 13 (4-12) and 10 rebounds in one game, which is pretty good.

I think the best US imports in the BSN are Ira Newble (who had a great career with the Cavs), Lee Nailon (who also played for the Cavs too), and DeMarr Johnson (who is most known for getting arrested a few times and otherwise might have been able to stay in the NBA).

PUR - Capitanes beat Leones, stand as last unbeaten team in BSN

ARECIBO (Baloncesto Superior Nacional) – Capitanes de Arecibo saw off Leones de Ponce 74-66 on Tuesday night to stand as the last undefeated team in BSN.

David Cortes had a game-high 20 points, Angelo Reyes added 13 and Courtney Sims chipped in with 12 for Capitanes who improved to 3-0.

The defeat was the first of the season for Leones (4-1).

Cortes and Sims helped the hosts get off to a quick start out of the gates, to take an early 10-3 lead.

The visitors used an 8-1 spurt to tie it at 11 before Reyes and Cortes put Arecibo in front 15-11.

Alvin Cruz and Bobby Joe Hatton spearheaded a second quarter run by Ponce, who took a 35-29 at intermission.

The teams went back and forth throughout the third period, battling for the lead before Capitanes scored nine unanswered points in the final frame to go up 69-58 and Leones lacked the consistency required to make a late comeback.

Cruz led Ponce with 19 points and Hatton added 12.

Meanwhile, Caciques de Humacao won their first game of the season after edging out Cangrejeros de Santurce 74-71.

John Millsap and James Mays provided some timely offense in the final quarter to help Caciques regain the lead and never relinquish it. The two players combined for 35 points.

Roberto Nieves had 18 points for Cangrejeros and Marquis Gainous added 14.

Tonight, Mets de Guaynabo pay a visit to Indios de Mayagüez and on Thursday Arecibo travel to Santurce.

    PUR - Vaqueros crush Ponce

BAYAMON (Baloncesto Superior Nacional) - Vaqueros de Bayamon hammered Leones de Ponce 94-65 in Tuesday's BSN action in Puerto Rico.

The win saw Bayamon improve their record to 5-3 while Ponce dropped their fourth game in a row.

The visitors had started the season with four straight wins, but could not end the losing streak they have had since and dropped to 4-4 following Tuesday's result.

Terrence Shannon scored 20 points, Javier Mojica 19 and Christian Dalmau 17 for Vaqueros. The home side also got a big lift from Robert Traylor who controlled the paint with 11 rebounds and three block shots.

Leones jumped out to an early 7-3 lead before Vaqueros ran off nine unanswered points to edge in front and stayed in front, 16-12, as the first quarter came to a close.

The reigning champions blew the game wide open in the second quarter thanks to an 11-0 spurt that saw their advantage increase to 27-15 and they were in firm control up 48-23 at halftime.

They would predictably hold on to the lead for the rest of the game to secure another win at home.

Ricky Melendez had 21 points in the loss. Alvin Cruz added 16 to go along with eight rebounds and seven assists.

In the night's other game, Cangrejeros de Santurce won on the road, defeating Indios de Mayagüez 92-83 thanks to 18 points from Ricky Sanchez, 16 from Roberto Nieves and 12 by Walter Hodge.

Alejandro Carmona returned from a suspension to score a game-high 24 points and Paul Graham added 21 for the hosts, but it wasn't enough as they suffered their seventh defeat in as many games and are at the bottom of the league.

PUR - Capitanes hand Leones fifth straight loss

PONCE (Baloncesto Superior Nacional) - Capitanes de Arecibo beat Leones de Ponce 79-74 on their own court and sent them crashing to their fifth straight defeat in the BSN on Thursday.

Capitanes were without Courtney Sims after they decided to let go the American guard who had been averaging nine points and 4.4 rebounds in five games.

Leones entered the game featuring new faces, with Leon Rodgers and Andre Brown who replaced DeAngelo Collins and DerMarr Johnson.

Early on, Puerto Rican national team shooting guard Larry Ayuso accounted for most of Arecibo's offense, accounting for 12 of their first 16 points as they jumped out to a 24-17 lead at the end of the first period.

The hosts stepped up their defense in the second quarter and that enabled them to cut the deficit to 38-36 by halftime.

Leones carried that momentum through to the early part of the third quarter and took their first lead of the game on a basket by Manuel De Jesus.

However, that was short lived as Ayuso helped Arecibo get back in front and start the final frame with a 59-54 edge.

With eight minutes left to play, Capitanes were up 67-54, but Ponce made a furious run, reeling off 13 unanswered points to tie the game on Alvin Cruz's basket with 4:27 remaining.

But Angelo Reyes hit two timely buckets and Andres Rodriguez's drive to the basket ultimately deflated Ponce.

Ayuso led Arecibo with 19 points while David Cortes added 18. Jeff Aubry and Reyes had 12 points and 12 rebounds each.

Meanwhile, Mets de Guaynabo edged out visiting Vaqueros de Bayamon 77-74 in the day's other game.

Angel Figueroa had 19 points and Marcus Fizer chipped in with 17 as Guaynabo improved to 6-2.

On Friday, Piratas de Quebradillas play at Cangrejeros de Santurce and Leones go to Isabela.

Import changes in Quebradillas and San German

Piratas de Quebradillas released American guard Walker Russell Jr and signed forward Shawn Redhage.

Redhage, who is part of the Australian National Team, averaged 18.5 points and 7.3 rebounds last season with Quebradillas.

Meanwhile, Atleticos de San German announced the release of Blake Walker and signed Marcus Melvin. They will also get Carlos Strong (Boston University) and Ryan Abraham (Appalachian State University) who were selected in the BSN rookie draft.

PUR - Leones back to winning ways

PONCE (Baloncesto Superior Nacional) - After starting the season with four wins in a row, Leones de Ponce then dropped their next five but they have steadied the ship by winning their last two and climbing back up the BSN standings.

Ponce's luck turned around for the better after a change in their import players. They signed forward Leon Rodgers (picture) and prior to their last game added Lee Nailon to spark new life into their offense.

Nailon signed with the team after being released by Quebradillas, who let the American go to address other needs in their roster.

Last Friday, Leones put an end to their five-game losing streak by beating Gallitos de Isabela 86-77 behind Ricky Melendez's 20 points with Rodgers adding 19 and Bobby Joe Hatton chipping 17. The team shot 53% from the field (33-62) and 59% from three point range (13-22).

On Monday, Leones recorded their second win in a row with a 91-77 crushing of visiting Mets de Guaynabo. Rodgers had a team-high 20 points - 18 of them coming in the second half - and grabbed 12 rebounds. Manuel Narvaez contributed a massive double-double of 18 points and 16 boards, while Melendez netted 15. Nailon, who had averaged 21 points and 7.6 rebounds with Quebradillas, finished with 12 in his debut.

Meanwhile, Jonathan Garcia hit an incredible half-court shot to give Quebradillas an 88-85 win over visiting Indios de Mayagüez.

David Huertas finished with 20 points and Joel Jones Camacho added 15 for the hosts while Alejandro Carmona had 22 and James Maye 20 for Mayagüez who are still without a win so far this season with an 0-9 mark.

Elsewhere, Ricardo Dalmau reached the 6,000 point plateau last Friday after helping Cangrejeros Santurce beat his old team Piratas de Quebradillas 87-77. Dalmau had 19 points and joined his brothers Christian and Richie as well as his father Raymond in reaching that landmark.

Capitanes de Arecibo are top of the table with a 6-1 record after edging out Gallitos de Isabela 78-77 thanks to Larry Ayuso's winning basket in the closing seconds.

Gallitos dominated the whole game but Ayuso snatched the win much to the delight of the home fans. The shooting guard finished with 18 points and David Cortes added 16 in the winning cause while Filiberto Rivera was the game's high-scorer with 21 for Gallitos.

BSN action continues today as Vaqueros de Bayamon visit Atleticos de San German.

    So Antoine Walker got cut???

And I read that Gallitos de Isabela signed Alando Tucker, who started season in NBA. He will replace Devin Green.

PUR – Puerto Rican league review

Vaqueros fight back and hand Capitanes rare defeat

BAYAMON (Baloncesto Superior Nacional) – Vaqueros de Bayamón recorded their eighth win of the season by beating leagues leaders Capitanes de Arecibo 88-77 in front of 5,000 fans.

Capitanes scored the game’s first eight points and they were up 18-6 on Rafael “Pachy” Cruz’s three-pointer with 3:34 left in the opening period.

The hosts started the second quarter trailing 26-18 but were within 43-38 at the break thanks to some help off the bench.

Vaqueros found their range in the third quarter and Javier Mojica tied the game at 50 when he hit a three-pointer midway through the period. They would go on to take a 60-59 advantage heading into the final frame.

Franklin Western, Terrence Shannon and Christian Dalmau spearheaded a 13-3 run for the home side who built a 73-62 lead and rarely looked back the rest of the way.

Carmelo Lee buried a long bomb of his own to make it 86-73 and Capitanes turned the ball over allowing their opponents to stay in control.

Dalmau led a balanced offense for the hosts with 20 points, while Western and Shannon had 13 each. Robert Traylor had 12 points to go with four blocks and Lee had a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds.

The win saw Bayamón improve to 8-4 on the season.

Larry Ayuso had a game-high 24 points in the loss and Jeff Aubry – who had 12 points in the first quarter alone – added 20 to go along with 11 boards for Capitanes, who suffered only their second defeat and still boast a 7-2 mark.

Meanwhile, Quebradillas Piratas needed overtime to see off visiting Cangrejeros de Santurce, 76-72.

The trio of Joel Jones Camacho, Shawn Redhage and Damon Jones combined for 53 points in the winning cause.

The visitors were in front before veteran Ian Lockhart scored the basket that sent the game into an extra session. With the score tied at 70, Jones scored the last four of his game-high 22 points to ensure the win.

Wilfredo Pagan had 18 and Ricky Sanchez chipped in with 17 for Santurce.

I'm glad to see Dalmau playing well and getting 2000 assists. It seems like his career has been falling recently.

Damon Jones is leaving the Quebradillas Pirates.
