Like the American NBA, the game has passed Filipinos by. The US will always be a contender in international basketball, but it will more and more be relegated to the semifinals, or maybe even the quarterfinals in international competition. It emphasizes only dunks, three-pointers, and other entertainment-oriented offensive showmanship. The NBA doesn't know how to play defense.

The PBA is a carbon copy of the US NBA. It's like the NBA Little League. It's all entertainment, showmanship, and offense. No offense, but the PBA doesn't play defense.

In the 1992 Olympics, the USA destroyed all the competition by an average of close to 40 points. In the 1996 Olympics, the point differential was only about 20 points, and in 2000, they beat Lithuania by two, and France in the finals by only 10. And finally, in 2004, they were only third place. This is what's happening to the Philippines in SE Asia. The gap is closing rapidly, and in probably less than 10 years, the gap will be gone; then the Philippines will have to fight for survival even in SE Asia.

To be competitive, not only in SE Asia, but in all of Asia:

    (1) the PBA must emulate the European basketball system, not the declining US NBA system, by inviting European coaches, teams, players, and referees to the Philippines.

    (2) the PBA must be aggressive in seeking out and recruiting big and tall Americans and Europeans of Filipino descent.

    (3) the PBA must recruit quality American and European coaches.

    (4) the Philippines must send teams to compete in more competitive tournaments in Asia, Australia, South America, and Europe.

    (5) college teams must recruit more international players, like the US NCAA teams.

Of course, all of the above means a huge financial investment. If the Philippines and the PBA don't want to spend big on basketball, then the country has to start looking at other sports where there are height and weight classifications like boxing, martial arts, etc. Basketball is a big man's sport, and Filipinos will always be smaller than the rest of the basketball world. Good, tall basketball players will always beat good, small basketball players.
can i agree/disagree with your comment??

    1. following european rules is not the solution (not that im an expert) but changing certain rule in pba are more realistic...
remember its the excitement that are making the PBA attractive to filipino's..take that away and you see a boring style of play...(ive seen enough FIBA games to make this conclusion)..and if its boring then people wont come..no people means no money and no money well...why do you think corporation do this?? for glory? nah...money money and more money...

    2. makes sense...although its recruiting tall ones that are hard to get...
remember filipino's are pandak (short) by nature...but yeah i agree

    3. i dont know about this...american coaches OR european doesnt make them the best coaches...i see this argument in australian soccer where theyre torn in hiring a 'high class' coach or a local coach..and you just basically contradicted yourself when you said US is not par to europe...so if that so why hire one...

    4. I fully agree on this one...exposure is the key..china is sending its development team for exposure which will benefit them in the future..
    the more exposure the better..

    5. this is a bit tricky...usually they recruit locally and if they see potential filipino from overseas (like that japan base filo i forgot his name that played for la salle archer) but with sam ekwe of san beda (i think hes from nigeria? i forgot) i think this is a good idea but the chances of them playing for their country is big and might not reap from the effort in developing them while in the country...

and lastly...every sport needs money...not just basketball...
this is not america dude...this is the philippines...this is not a personal attack on you....but when you said to concentrate in a sport that we are good at then you probably have not been in the philippines long enough to know how basketball run deep in the Filipino blood regardless of height...
and of money consideration...point blank blunt? we dont have much...
and considering we dont have much...wouldnt you agree that we achieve too much with a penny??

    my thoughts....

3 to 4 players are expected to get the boot soon- to be replaced by those that chot feels more adept to the international brand of play. quickness and rebounding will prolly form the emphasis of the changes.

instead of taking them out, reyes should expand the pool and relegate them there. 15 to 20 players will be alright for the meantime.

There's no such thing as "european rules" there is such a thing as "FIBA rules"--which I believe should be implemented by the PBA...

enough with the stupid and "trying to be NBA" 3pt range... adjust the 3pt range to that of FIBA, this shall encourage a lot more players to take the 3 and develop the skill...

there is no point to a player adjusting to the rules every time he plays internationally... this should be second nature to him and the only way to get used to it is by playing it FIBA rules in the PBA

Please post anything about the Philippine Team, which is not related to the SEABA Championships, on the Philippine Basketball section. Also, there is a thread there dedicated to Philippine National Team Discussion.

    FIBA/EUROPE EUROPE/FIBA...same thing...
ok maybe i should have said fiba rules...

anyway the pba needs to have a major haul in terms of rules...
i just watch a CBA games..(china) where hard bumps is a natural thing..
remember their league is NBA affiliated playing a FIBA rules...

in the pba...i see these 'soft foul' all the time!!!
we just need a little tweak here and there and it should be a competitive league and at the same time exciting league...

oh well...well just have to see the after math of these games...
