First result: Uruguay 88 - Panama 84, in overtime. Esteban Batista tied the game in 75 with 1 second to go in the fourth quarter.

BRA - Brazil beats Canada , Barbosa explode for 30 Points

LAS VEGAS (2007 FIBA Americas Championship) - When you think of Brazil's Leandro Barbosa, you think of speed.

True to form, the 6'4'' guard got off to a fast start and ultimately helped Brazil race to a 75-67 victory.

Canada, however, would not go quietly. As such, the contest was much more a marathon than a sprint.

Barbosa netted 11 points during an opening quarter in which Brazil, as a team, shot 67 percent from the field.

Facing a 25-12 deficit after one period of play, Canada would make some noise.

Juan Mendez's hot hand in the second stanza (five-of-seven from the field), helped pull the Canadians to within three points at the half, 36-33.

The second half would once again belong to Barbosa, who finished with a game high 30 points.

Adding 12 points and nine rebounds was forward Tiago Splitter, who was a factor inside all night.

Samuel Dalembert tallied 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Canadians while Mendez finished with 18 points in a losing effort.

Notes: Canada's Andy Rautins sustained what appeared to be a knee injury early in the first half of Canada's loss to Brazil.

USA - United States dominates Venezuela to close day 1

LAS VEGAS (2007 FIBA Americas Championship) - If the United States was trying to send a message that it is the team to beat in this tournament, most would agree that Venezuela got that message loud and clear on Wednesday night.

The USA scored early and often, opening the game on a 9-0 run and rolling to a 112-69 victory to cap the action on day one at Thomas & Mack Center on the campus of UNLV.

The USA employed a balanced attack, with seven players scoring in double digits.

Carmelo Anthony and Michael Redd led the United States with 17 apiece. The USA also dominated inside, outscoring the Venezuelans 58-14 in the paint.

Defensively, Dwight Howard led the USA with three blocks while Kobe Bryant and LeBron James teamed for 6 steals.

Collectively, the USA forced Venezuela into 20 turnovers, capitalizing on those miscues with 41 fast break points. Greivis Vasquez led Venezuela with 12 points.

Barbosa and Machado took 35 shots of 61 from whole Brazilian team. And both with a bad FG%. I am asking me if Brazil benefits from the play of Barbosa or not? For now and what i see at the WC last year i would say NO. He was bad at the WC and yesterday too. It is not that difficult to make 30p when you take 26 shots. What is he thinking? Brazil has enough good players compared to other teams in this tournament and there is no need for Barbosa trying it to do all alone.

Perhaps somebody from Brazil and South America can tell me more about his attidue to play for his country.

IMO, I expect this tournament to be walk in the park for the USA Team, this is probably one of the best team ever assemble since the 1992 USA Dream Team.

Although, no one was expecting that Venezuela would put on a great game because this team is not even in the same level as Argentina and Brazil.

I praise the United States for dominating on both ends of the floor they started pretty hot in the 1st half and by the time the game is already decided their role players still continuously hitting their shots.

If everyone can stay healthy they can win the gold in '08. They just need to stick to a team that will fit them together.

The tone was set from the opening tap by, who else, the Lakers' Kobe Bryant. Coach Mike Krzyzewski put him on the Venezuela point guard, Greivis Vasquez, a Maryland sophomore, who was challenged even in trying to complete an entry pass.

"I don't know how to explain it," said Vasquez after the game. "That was amazing."

"I grew up watching the NBA. I was in College Park, watching his highlights. All of a sudden, he was guarding me like it was the last game of his life. . . .

"I'm 20 years old. . . . It was tough. I'm not going to lie to you guys. I lost the ball on a couple of possessions. . . .

"But tomorrow's another day. It's all good. I'm glad it happened."

Kobe was the perfect addition to the team. People will start to realize that Kobe can be a sick playmaker when he has good players to pass to. Kobe is playing like he used to when the Lakers were winning their championships. This tournament will be a good way to build up the chemistry between these guys, so next year in the Olympics, they will be a tight squad. USA will be taking the gold in '08.

Lebron/Melo and Kobe prove their leadership role in this team by being aggressive at the early part of the game.

Dwight Howard and Amare Stoudemire might be one of the best front courts in this squad as they attempt to get as many rebounds as possible and make sure that the other team will not be making their easy baskets.

Jason Kidd and Chauncey Billups look like they hit the fountain of youth when they are able to run with the young guys of the other team.

Michael Redd/Mike Miller/ and the rest of the guys prove that they are part of this team by contributing very well in the 2nd half when Coach K finally pull his starter out of the game.

Brazil played a very bad game, it's not a surprise for us brazilians since we know that every first game of the competition we suck, just like against Australia in the World Championship. Leandrinho started the game very well, scoring a lot of points but suddenly he started to miss some shots, and he did not stop to shoot

. Marcelinho Machado is a selfish player, nobody likes him here in Brazil, he has talent but he doesn't know how to use it for him and for the team. The canadian team based their defense on the paint, just watch the fouls Nene received, they were very hard.
Since brazilian head coach knew that the most important thing in the first game was to win, no matter if you played well or not, he kept Leandrinho in the game and even though he missed a lot of shots, he still was the main reason we won the game.
Brazil always starts slow in the competition and then improves, that's very bad for us. Against Venezuela on friday, you'll see more players scoring.
