  • So sad to see this, especially from a team with such a distinguished history as Global Cebu FC. It's no secret though that Dan Palami's company isn't doing as well anymore financially as it used to, hence problems like these are happening in a league with high Operating Costs and not enough other sponsors.

    • PFL: DAVAO AGUILAS 0-2 CERES-NEGROS

      By Ceres Media | May 2, 2018

Ceres-Negros maintained its unbeaten run in the Philippines Football League after they hammered out a 2-0 victory over a the dangerous Davao Aguilas last May 2 at the Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila. Bienvenido Marañon and Mike Ott scored the goals while Toni Doblas was declared as man of the match.

The home squad had the best chance early in the match when Angel Guirado sent a good ball towards Harrison Sawyer. The Australian headed well towards goal but Toni Doblas stepped up to make a fine save in the 4th minute.

Ceres-Negros wrested control of the match after a good spell by Davao early in the match. Marañon slid into the box for a shot but the ball went wide. Manny Ott and Marañon linked up well in the 21st minute but the Davao defense cleared the ball to safety after the shot from Ott.

Both teams struggled to create under the searing heat with temperatures reaching 36 degrees with a heat index of 42 degrees. It was only in the 42nd minute where a moment of brilliance saw Ceres going ahead. Marañon casually ran into the box before unleashing a glorious chip over Nick O’Donnell to score the opener.

The Aguilas had a good chance to equalize on a breakaway in the 52nd minute through the James Younghusband. Sawyer broke free on the left hand side and found Younghusband who evaded his marker before unleashing a point blank shot. Doblas however was there to thwart the attempt to keep Ceres on the driver seat.

Stephan Schrock sent a well-timed ball to Marañon but the Spaniard’s attempt went straight to the keeper. Mike Ott had a chance moments later when he broke through the trap to set-up a one-on-one with O’Donnel. Ott’s initial chance was blocked by the keeper but he persevered to secure the rebound to slot in the second goal in the 55th minute.

Davao tried to get a goal back minutes later but Doblas was there again for a wonderful save on Guirado’s attempt in front of goal. The Aguilas tried again moments later but the veteran keeper punched the ball out to safety.

      • Based on this statement, it seems to me that the issue is that the new owner of the club, Carranz Outdoors doesn't have a very deep pocket and is unable to finance Global Cebu FC's commitments in the PFL and abroad.

It seems that the management of the team, though, have been trying to meet its commitments to the PFL and abroad on its own. Ultimately, I think this is an exercise in futility. Money is what the club functions, and whoever has it will ultimately have control of the team.

I appreciate the somewhat heroic actions of the management, but they cannot force to spend more than they want if they don't want to. Sad to see this happening, but it is what it is ...

Global-Cebu Management Breaks Silence on Club Affairs

Published 1 min ago on May 5, 2018
        By Lorenzo del Carmen

One of the most storied professional football clubs in the Philippines is in utter disarray

Global-Cebu Football Club Chief Operations Officer Josef Malinay released a statement to the media Friday night clarifying some of the issues that have plagued the club such as ownership and financial matters.

It is safe to say that all is not well for Global off the pitch and that their problems have spilled onto the field as the Cebu-based club failed to qualify out of the 2018 AFC Cup group and failed to travel to Iloilo recently for the Philippines Football League assignment against Kaya-Iloilo Football Club.

The statement stated that Azkals team manager Dan Palami sold the club to Carranz Outdoor CEO Alvin Carranza “as early as December 2017.” One month later, Carranza wrote to the PFL for the club to not participate in the 2018 season of the league, a move that would have cut the competition to five teams after the exits of Ilocos United and Manila Meralco.

        • In few more minutes, if the trend continues, we'll have a SEAsian and Pinoy in the English Premiership. My Birmingham City Blues also doing Cardiff a favour by beating Fulham 2-0 atm. Let's hope and pray that the scoreline staysthe same until at the end of the FT whistle!

                • Ceres’ Martin Steuble in Trouble for PFL Remarks after AFC Cup Match

                  Earl Averilla

Liga Futbol Inc. (LFI), the governing body of Philippines Football League, is about to commence proceedings that will lead to disciplinary sanctions towards Ceres Negros defender Martin Steuble.

This is in-line with the Azkal’s scathing remarks towards the local league in a post-match interview of Ceres Negros against Yangon United in Myanmar last Wednesday, May 16.

Speaking to FOX Sports PH after the Business of Football-Philippines event in Makati, Mr. Xavier shared the league’s stand regarding the contents of Steuble’s statements:

“It’s unfortunate that the player (Martin Steuble) had to make such remarks which, of course, affects the credibility and integrity of the league.

“Having said that, we have investigated this matter and we will definitely open disciplinary proceedings against the player hopefully next week.”

It's always great to see someone supporting the home team. The atmosphere in those home games are fantastic, the PFL now has a couple of teams with excellent home support in Davao, Iloilo and Negros.

Binan has a smaller but enthusiastic following. Marikina has yet to play consistently at home while Cebu is having financial problems.

                              • Only in the Philippines where the fourth (?, maybe even lower?) tier National Basketball League (NBL) gets regular TV coverage of all their games while the top tier Philippines Football League (PFL) can't do the same.
