Serbia was an underdog and has been considered an outsider by many in recent tournaments. Spain was expected to win the gold no matter what. This changes everything in basketball. In 2015 when Serbia was seen as the 3d favorite to win the tournament, they choked against Lithuania (who won because they were the underdogs).

During the last three years, Spain was number #1 in Europe talent wise, while Serbia was something like #4-5. They relied on team chemistry to win medals.

Medals aside and all things considered, during the last three years, the best teams in Europe were Spain, France, Serbia. In that order.

Also, some people are mentioning that Spain is in decline. Perhaps they are. They are declining from being the best team in Europe to one of the best teams in Europe. Even without Pau, Navarro, Reyes, Spain still has more skilled players around than Serbia.

      2013-2016

Spain have bigger talent in the team, Serbia better motivation and team play.

In my opinion, Spain has been more powerful NT than Serbia in 2013-2016, but great respect for Serbia (especially Djordevic and Teodosic).
Djordjevic is a great coach and he has done a great job with an average roster.

But in the end the answer is easy

Can anyone imagine Serbia winning by 20 to Spain?

Spain traditionally starts slowly at the tournaments, then starts playing amazing basketball and converting to the best European team by far. Nothing changed again in this Olympics but This time they paid the price of the slow start. This Spain would easily win EC. Serbia is probably second best team with Lithuania based on the results. As talentwise, France is the 2nd, IMO.

Can anyone imagine Spain being blown out by the US?

Serbia actually quite matured under Djordjevic, not necessarily his coaching magic, but cohesion work he did on the team + actual maturing of some key players (Teo and Bjelica are not kids any more). It would surely be interesting to see a match-up of Spain in play-off mode and this Serbia in thrashing Boomers mode. That one would be a game to remember, don't dare to say who'd win.
