  • 2016 Fiba Africa U18 Championship

U18 Fiba Africa tournament is currently underway (22-31 July) in Kigali, Rwanda.

    Official Site

From the 12 scheduled teams, split in two groups, Zimbabwe withdrew.

Group A: Algeria, Cote d'Ivoire, Gabon, Mali, Rwanda
Group B: Angola, Benin, Congo (DR), Egypt, Tunisia, Uganda.

No surprise in D1, except the overwhelming win of host Rwanda over Gabon 94-64, while Angola defeated Tunisia, in a game between two of Group B favorites. Egypt had no problems with Benin buried by 141 pts (Group's result in Fiba Africa site is obviously wrong - it's the opposite way).

Egypt, Mali, Angola should be among the favorites in the tournament, that will qualify the top two finishing nations besides host Egypt for U19 WC.

    Games can be watched live.

Edit: D1 Egypt-Benin result now fixed on Fiba Africa page.

After the preliminary phase, Angola and Mali top their respective groups and advance unbeaten to QF.
No real surprises so far, except home team Rwanda finishing unexpectedly 2nd in its group, but with a tough task next against Tunisia.

    QF pairings, scheduled July 29:

    Cote d'Ivoire-Angola
    Algeria-Egypt
    Tunisia-Rwanda
    Congo (DR)-Mali

      Sf field defined:
      Mali-Egypt
      Angola-Tunisia

In today qf only Egypt had a hard fought game vs Algeria, that tried to comeback with a strong Q4..

Angola won the title beating Egypt at OT, 86-82, after a hard fought game in the fully crowded Kigali arena.
The talented Angolan team had to face a more experienced Egypt, that nearly won the game before the score was tied by one Angola FT with few seconds remaining in the regulation time. The winners were led by center Bruno Fernandes with 21 pts.
Silvio Sousa of Angola was named tournament's MVP.
Mali beat Tunisia 59-52 to finish 3rd earning the last spot for 2017 U19 WC.

Watched a lot of the semifinals on Saturday and Angola looked like by far the best team, but I guess Egypt had enough size to give them trouble. The crowd in Rwanda does not like the North African teams.

Crowd in fact was wildly rooting for Angola tonight...

Some more on Angola: MVP Silvio Sousa and leading scorer Bruno Fernandes have played at Montverde Acad, Fla. Sousa is a highly ranked 2018-class prospect while 2016's Fernandes decommitted from SMU and will return to Montverde having reclassified into the 2017-class. He's already played with the Sr NT at the recent OQT.
