After 6 games, an unlikely team sits atop the UAAP standings. Ateneo has ridden a bumper crop of rookies and other young players to take pole position with one match left in the first round. See the standings here.
Coach Jaypee Merida sometimes starts as many as 6 rookies in his squad. Enzo Ceniza, Jordan Jarvis, keeper AJ Arcilla, William Grierson, Mark Nacional, Jimi Haosen, and Sam Lim all sport the shaved head that marks them as first-year players.
One of his most senior players, captain Carlo Liay, is still recovering from a calf injury, meaning Jay-Ra Rocha has taken his place as the central man among the 3 centerbacks.
None of this has fazed the team that has only allowed two goals all season long, against UE and UST. But complementing the ironclad defense is a prolific attack that has rocked opposing goal frames with 17 scores in 6 matches, 6 more than the next best side, UP.
Three-pronged attack
Ateneo's marquee player is sophomore Jarvey Gayoso. The wide attacking threat has sporting pedigree on both sides of his family. His father is former PBA player Jayvee, and his maternal grandfather is Ed Ocampo, a legendary Ateneo basketball and football star. The upper college field in Ateneo is named after him.
Gayoso is a serial box ticker. A Kiefer Ravena in cleats. He has scoring chops, as evidenced by his 5 goals this season. Amazingly he says he has 5 assists this season too. The kid displays a preternatural ability to outfox defenders with his mind as well as his feet.
One unheralded but very important arrow in Gayoso's quiver is his corner-taking. At the UAAP level many corner kicks are soft and high, necessitating Incredible Hulk-like neck muscles to power headers goalward. But Jarvey, (pronounced “Harvey”), has the technique to zip them in low and hard, so that center forwards need only to redirect the ball with power to beat goalies.
Gayoso is also internationally-sized and internationally-quick. He has played for our national U19 team and is definitely in the mix for the SEA Games. What he needs to work on is his physical strength (he is a bit reedy), and his right foot, which plays a distant second fiddle to his world-class left.
But playing off Gayoso is Ceniza, who is an early favorite for Rookie of the Year honors.
“Enzo has impressed me the most of all the rookies,” says Gayoso. “It's difficult for a rookie to be in an intense position like his and he has handled it well enough to dominate against the teams in the middle.”
Ceniza was a prodigy. He first started playing at the age of 4 and was in the youth national team system at the age of 13. He has won the Milo nationals twice as the tournament MVP. Ceniza is also the son of legendary Cebuano player and coach Mario Ceniza. No doubt all the football talk over the kitchen table has helped.

ADMU dominated the first half, but UST made adjustments and dominated the second half, almost sending the game into overtime. Nevertheless, ADMU secures the first finals slot in the UAAP.

Blue Eagles’ Silence in Front of Goal Marks 0-3 Loss to NU

AFTER SECURING a 1-0 win over the University of Santo Tomas (UST), the Ateneo Men’s Football Team failed to to maintain their winning form in their matchup against National University (NU) at the Ang Liga tournament on Saturday, August 18 at the Gatorade-Chelsea FC Blue Pitch in Makati City.
Failure to snuff out attacking threats and a barren spell in attack let the table-topping Bulldogs steal a 3-0 win at the Blue Eagle’s expense.
The match took the character of an open game, which signalled a chance for Ateneo to explore other attacking weapons and test their defensive mettle in the absence of striker Jarvey Gayoso, defender Jayrah Rocha, and coach Jaypee Merida. Unfortunately, an efficient NU performance exposed the Blue Eagles’ weaknesses on both ends as Ateneo struggled to find the net and lacked the organization to track the opposing front line.
A slow start for Ateneo allowed NU to pin them back in their own half, but their scrambling defense was enough to hold the Bulldogs at bay. The tide of the match took a turn after NU’s Marvin Viray was sent off in the 15th minute for a dangerous high kick. True enough, the Blue Eagles began to take control and respond with attacking pressure of their own.
Midfielders Enzo Ceniza and Julian Roxas were instrumental in launching swift Ateneo counterattacks by spraying passes forward and to the wings, but numerous chances went begging as the front line failed to fire past NU keeper Hayeson Pepito. Michael Castillo and Rupert Baña in particular had clear-cut attempts in the 23rd and 34th minutes that sailed inches wide.
Though Ateneo looked the more dominant side with long spells of possession, NU found acres of space down the wings and kept a constant presence in and around the box. The offensive threat paid off just as the 1st half drew to a close, as NU strikers Sean Epili and Owen Padernal each took advantage of defensive errors in the 40th and 44th minutes to put the Bulldogs up 2-0 entering halftime.
The deficit seemed to spur the Blue Eagles on even more as they turned up the heat on NU’s defensive line. Gaudiel’s high-tempo pressure was highlighted in particular as Ateneo began the second half camped in the attacking third. Baña linked up well with the midfielders, who set up chances for Castillo and Paolo Alilam to score. Carlitos Mathay and Xavier Alcuaz also gained chances in the box, but the NU defense had luck on their side and managed to escape with a vital interception or blocks.

NU, UST Draw in Ang Liga Season 15

National University (NU) and defending champion University of Sto. Tomas (UST) shared the spoils in a goalless draw in the top division of the Ang Liga Season 15 collegiate football tournament on Saturday at the Blue Pitch in Circuit, Makati City.
Both teams out of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines churned out scoring chances but goalkeepers Hayeson Pepito of NU and Zaldy Abraham of UST made crucial saves to preserve the result.
With the scoreless stalemate, the NU Booters hiked their tally to seven points to regain the pole position with a one marker-lead over the streaking University of the Philippines.

UE Forces Goalless Draw Against NU
ON SEPTEMBER 17, 2017 FOOTBALL TIMES
National University (NU) was left frustrated as it settled for a goalless draw with the struggling University of the East (UE) in the top division of the Ang Liga Season 15 collegiate football tournament on Saturday at the San Beda College Football Field in Manila.
The NU Booters failed to grab the maximum points, which could have lifted them back to the top spot, while the resolute Red Warriors notched their first point in their third game.
Ninety minutes of football produced nothing but botched efforts in the encounter featuring two teams from University Athletic Association of the Philippines.
With the draw, National U remained on the second spot with 11 points, one point behind leading Lyceum of the Philippines University, while UE stayed on the eighth spot in the ten-team field.
