San Beda Denies Lyceum an Upset Win in NCAA football

    ABS-CBN News
    Posted at Jan 10 2017 06:45 PM

MANILA, Philippines – Fil-Brit Connor Tacagni scored two goals to lift San Beda College to a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over the upset-seeking Lyceum of the Philippines University in the NCAA Season 92 football tournament on Tuesday at the Rizal Football Field

The Red Booters, seeking a sweep of the tournament, found themselves down by a goal after Lyceum's Riel Mark Subebe came through on a set piece in the 15th minute.

The 24-year-old Tacagni, a native of Manchester, England, came to San Beda's rescue as he unleashed a pair of rockets: the first of which came in the 41st minute; and the other – the match-winner – on the 81st.

"I just focused on helping my team win," said Tacagni.

The victory pushed the Red Booters closer to their goal of sweeping their way to the championship. San Beda also won all of their matches in the first round to take the pennant.

San Beda Downs Arellano, Moves One Win from NCAA Football Title

By Joey Villar (The Philippine Star) | Updated January 12, 2017 - 4:58pm

MANILA, Philippines — San Beda leaned on the late heroics off Mike Daniel Riconalla and Adolfo Abada as it edged last year's champion Arellano U, 1-0 to move on the crest of claiming the 92nd NCAA football title at the Rizal Football Field Thursday.

With the match appearing to head to a shootout after a scoreless tie, Riconalla headed home the match-clinching goal off a beautiful corner kick by Abada on the 81st minute that pushed the Red Booters one win away from claiming the crown via sweep.

The win by the Mendiola-based school came on the heels of a come-from-behind 2-1 win over Lyceum of the Philippnes University that was decided by Fil-Brit Connor Tacagni's double.

This time, San Beda went to Riconalla and Abada to secure the win.

San Beda will play St. Benilde on Tuesday and a win will seal the former a league-best 22nd crown, leaving former member La Salle as the second most titled school with 21 championships.

Tacagni Weaves Magic as San Beda Claims 22nd NCAA Football Crown

        By: Randolph B. Leongson - Reporter / @RLeongsonINQ
        INQUIRER.net / 06:19 PM January 17, 2017

Connor Tacagni pulled off his biggest trick late to help San Beda complete a perfect campaign in the NCAA Season 92 men’s football with a 1-0 victory over St. Benilde Tuesday at Rizal Memorial Coliseum.

Tacagni converted an unassuming cross that found the left corner of the net in the 116th minute to snare the Red Booters’ 22nd NCAA football title.

“The desire of the players to win was so big,” said a jubilant coach Christopher Pedimonte.

The Green Booters still had a chance to force a penalty shootout, but San Beda keeper Ralph Datoy stopped Jonel dela Cruz’ potential equalizer at the 120th minute to end the match.

NU Bulldogs Football Team Feeling at Home in Cebu

The NU Bulldogs are preparing for the UAAP Season 79 football tournament with a 10-day camp in Cebu, playing against other college teams from the CESAFI

CEBU CITY, Philippines - The National University collegiate football team are wrapping up their preparation for the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 79 seniors division football tournament with a 10-day training camp here in Cebu City.

Newly installed head coach Mari Aberasturi said that they decided to come to Cebu because there are a lot of strong teams here with whom they can play tune-up games with as part of their final preparation.

“In the 10 days here in Cebu, you can already go up against 5 quality teams,” said Aberasturi, who is also the assistant coach of the San Beda Red Booters who took the men’s football title of the NCAA Season 92 last Tuesday, January 17.

The UAAP 78th Season will kickoff on February 5 with the NU Bulldogs facing the University of the East (UE) Red Warriors.

The best finish that the NU Bulldogs had in the seniors division football tournament was at fifth place in the 76th season. Last year, the team finished 6th.

“Right now we are working on their mentality, that they have the capability to win because right now they don’t fully believe that they will win. So we are confidence building,” said Aberasturi, who took over as head coach of the NU Bulldogs last September.

He added that they will go through the season per game without thinking of advancing to the top 4 just yet as they still have adjustments to make in the team and the system.

UAAP Football Fires Off Feb. 4

BY JAELLE NEVIN REYES ON JANUARY 29, 2017
            FOOTBALL TIMES

The 79th season of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Football Tournament tips off with a triple-header at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium on February 4.

A total of eight squads in the Men’s Division and five teams in the Women’s Division will be vying to bring home the coveted collegiate football crown.

This year, reigning champions University of the Philippines (UP) will be jumpstarting their bid to defend their title with a heated match-up against De La Salle University in the main match of the Men’s Division at 4 p.m.

UP proved their dominance in last season’s competition after sealing the top seed in the elimination round with a record of nine wins, three draws and two losses.

They success of the Fighting Maroons continued as they blanked University of Santo Tomas (UST), 3-0, in their semifinals meeting before edging Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU), 4-1, in the championship.

Weekly LIVE coverage on ABS-CBN S+A and S+A HD begins Thursday, Feb 9

The UAAP Season 79 Men's Football season starts on February 4. Anto Gonzales' UP are one of the favorites to lift the trophy once again, a year after defeating Ateneo 4-1 in the Season 78 final match.

The selectors for the SEA Games team will no doubt be keeping a keen eye on the matches this season, which will mostly take place in Rizal Memorial on weekends. The televised Thursday matches will be played in Ateneo's Moro Lorenzo Football Field.

The Maroons face stiff competition from the rest of the 8-team field. Let's take a look at each side.

              Adamson: Continuing Growth

Coach Nolan Manito achieved a milestone two years into the Falcons' return to UAAP football last year. The squad notched their first win, a 1-0 victory over UE, and finished seventh, one better than the year before.

Manito brings an largely unchanged roster to battle this year, with leadership from the Jumo twins, Bless Brian I and Bless Brian II.

The Falcons are often competitive in their matches but tend to leak a lot of goals. The centerback pairing of Bryce Rabino and Jackson Ramos will need to work well to insulate goalkeeper Carl Viray, whose development as a goalie must also accelerate. Viray is a fine shot-stopper who needs to make better decisions about venturing out of his area. It's likely he will get plenty of work once again this season.

Adamson will not be a favorite to make the Final Four but they have been together now for 3 seasons, and cohesion counts a lot in football.

Ateneo: New Cogs In The Mix.

The Blue Booters have three new overseas-born Filipinos on their team, goalie AJ Arcilla from the USA and Jordan Jarvis and William Grierson from Hong Kong.

Watch Jarvis score a glorious header in a loss to Timor Leste in last year's AFF U19 championship at 1:50 of this clip.

The Freshman will likely play wingback for coach Jaypee Merida.

Arcilla will battle incumbent Kenn James for the right to wear that number one shirt for the Eagles.

Don't be surprised to see Carlo Liay drop back to centerback, where his experience and composure will be vital in the backline. Grierson could partner Liay in the back.

Ateneo is bristling with weapons like Julian Roxas, an aerial threat in Rupert Baña, and sophomore sensation Jarvey Gayoso, who is likely to continue his goalscoring ways from the left flank. Gayoso recently raised eyebrows with a dazzling 40-yard run and shot in a U22 friendly against Malaysia's U22 team. Sam Lim, a rookie from Colegio de San Agustin, could also play a big factor.

Another rookie, PAREF-Springdale's Enzo Ceniza is a highly-rated central midfielder. The son of coach Mario Ceniza, the Cebuano is known as a savvy passer.

Ateneo fell one win short of the crown last year then were runner-ups again in the Ang Liga a few weeks ago. This could be their tournament to go all the way.

              De La Salle: One-two punch.

The biggest off-season bit of good news for La Salle is the return of striker Gelo Diamante. The former youth national team striker is back for one more spin before taking medical school. For a second year he will play alongside younger brother Jed.

But there is even better news: the Archers attack will also feature another gunslinger in rookie Mathew Custodio. The former U19 national team goalscorer was raised here but has a British father. Last year he went to the UK for some trials.

Custodio is the kind of big forward that can really give UAAP defenders problems. Given the proper playing time he should be good for a half-a-dozen goals at the very least.

DLSU has yet another homegrown Filipino-Brit rookie forward in Chris Lawless, who like Custodio played with Nomads. Smit says Lawless has “a real knack for goal.”

Providing supply lines for the forwards will be Yoshiharu Koizumi, the Japanese-Davaoeño deep-lying playmaker who has tremendous passing touch. Koizumi impressed in the recent U22 friendly versus Malaysia and it's likely he will be serving up plenty of assists this season.

“He's in the best shape since I got him,” marvels Smit.

Far Eastern University: One Last Hurrah.

FEU is in transition. The architect of their football program, Kim Chul Su, has gone home to Korea. Vince Santos, former Loyola coach, is now in charge. Midfield sparkplug Nano Amita, who sat out last year with an ACL injury, is a scratch for this season too after reinjuring the knee.

This will be the last year of eligibility for a passel of standouts who formed the backbone of FEU's halycon days when they won the title in Seasons 76 and 77. Paolo Bugas, Val Jurao, Reymart Cubon, Patrick Rallos, Nicolas Ferrer, and Justin Calamba will all ride into the green-and-gold sunset after the last ball is kicked in a few months. Then next year a new crop of Tams, led by the promising youngster Gio Pabualan, will take the spotlight in Season 80, hopefully alongside Amita.

Master Kim may be gone but there will still be a Korean influence in the person of UFL veteran Park Bo Bae, who is part of the Tams' coaching staff. Bugas says that Park's system will be similar to Kim's, so there will be little adjustment. The team is determined to forge ahead despite the transition.

“Napagusapan namin sa buong team, including ang juniors team, na kahit anong mangyari, maglaro pa rin at mag perform ng maayos,” asserts Bugas, who is with both Global and the Azkals. (The whole team, including the juniors, agreed that no matter what happens we will play and perform well.)

Ateneo, UP Score Comfortable Wins in UAAP Football

MANILA, Philippines – Jarvey Gayoso scored a goal and assisted on another as Ateneo de Manila University picked up a second straight victory in the UAAP Season 79 men's football tournament with a 3-0 mastery of the 10-men National University (NU) Bulldogs on Thursday.

Rookie Sam Lim found the back of the net from a Gayoso assist just before halftime to put the Blue Eagles ahead in front of a cheering crowd at the Moro Lorenzo Field in the Ateneo campus.

Gayoso then converted a penalty two minutes upon restart, as NU defender Ross Lawagan was given a straight red card. It was Gayoso's third goal of the season, having netted a brace in last Sunday's 4-0 win over Adamson University.

Mario Ceniza put the finishing touches on the Blue Eagles' comfortable win with a strike in the 78th minute.

"Talagang nag-focus kami sa defending. Talagang there is no reason para mag-concede kami, kasi ayun ang pina-practice namin," said Ateneo coach JP Merida.
