Tacardon’s Brace Powers UP to Victory Over UST

BY JEREMIAH M. SEVILLA ON OCTOBER 2, 2017 FOOTBALL TIMES

Fidel Tacardon struck a brace as University of the Philippines (UP) notched a come-from-behind 4-2 victory over University of Santo Tomas (UST) to strengthen its grip of the second spot in the top division of the Ang Liga Season 15 collegiate football tournament on Sunday at the De La Salle University Science and Technology Complex Football Field in Biñan, Laguna.

Tacardon fired two goals down the stretch as the Maroon Booters crawled out of a 1-2 disadvantage en route to posting their fifth straight win against a loss for 15 points, just two markers behind leader National University.

The Golden Booters remained No. 5 with seven points after absorbing their fourth defeat in seven games.

With the loss, UST’s title-retention bid was also threatened as it stayed five points away from No. 4 College of Saint Benilde.

Following a scoreless first half, Dionisio Busmion netted the opener for UST in the 52nd minute but UP’s Christian Lapas made no mistake from the penalty spot to equalize in the 56th.

Conrado Dimacali immediately reclaimed the lead for the defending España-based champions a minute later.

UP downs Ateneo, Takes Ang Liga Lead

BY JEREMIAH M. SEVILLA ON OCTOBER 7, 2017 FOOTBALL TIMES

Christian Lapas scored the lone goal from the penalty spot as University of the Philippines (UP) downed Ateneo De Manila University, 1-0, to grab the lead in the top division of the Ang Liga Season 15 collegiate football tournament on Saturday at the De La Salle University Science and Technology Complex Football Field in Biñan, Laguna.

Lapas’ penalty kick conversion early in the match proved to be the difference in the “Katipunan Derby” as the Maroon Booters cruised to their sixth straight win for 18 points.

With the victory, the State U snatched away the pole position from idle National University, which holds 17 points on a 5-2-1 win-draw-loss record.

The Blue Booters’ rough preseason continued as they absorbed their third loss against two wins, keeping them stuck on No. 7 with six points.

UP’s early aggression paid off when Darwin Basconcillo’s shot hit the hand of Ateneo defender Jeremiah Rocha inside the box, resulting in a penalty kick for the Diliman-based booters.

National team standout Lapas made no mistake from the spot as the midfielder sent goalkeeper AJ Arcilla to the wrong side for the goal in the 18th minute.

Blue Eagles Gain Invaluable International Experience in Asian University Football Championship

        by Chino D. Reyes • Published 30 October, 2017 at 8:13 AM

LOOKING to garner more silverware and experience after taking the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 79 Football Championship, the Blue Eagles flew to Taebaek, South Korea to participate in the fourth Asian University Football Tournament from September 18 to 28.

Arranged and hosted by the Asian University Football Federation (AUFF), the University-specific arm of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), the tournament followed a group stage format with two groups of five teams each. After playing each team in the group once, the top teams of each group advanced to the finals while the second-placed teams in each group played for third place. The Blue Eagles were pitted against university teams from Korea, Japan, Iran, and Taiwan in Group B.

Having claimed the UAAP title last season, the Ateneo Men’s Football Team (AMFT) was the only university team from the Philippines to qualify for the prestigious invitational tournament. Multiple teams, however, from Korea, Japan, and Iran, composed of individually selected players from different universities, played in the competition.

Given the international experience of many of the teams within their group, AMFT Coach Jaypee Merida chose to deploy a similar side to their UAAP-winning lineup, making use of their favored 3-5-2 formation, but with a more defensive look.

Despite playing to their strengths, the Blue and White suffered a series of harsh defeats, losing to Japan B (0-12), Korea B (0-7), and Iran (1-4). The sole consolation of the tournament for the Blue Eagles was a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Taiwan.

Regardless of a rough set of results, the team was upbeat about the opportunity to experience top quality Asian competition. “It’s always good exposure to play in international tournaments, especially this tournament. We know that we won UAAP last year, but this tournament helped us to see what level we need to keep on striving for,” says Captain Julian Roxas.

San Beda Smothers Lyceum in Football

posted November 30, 2017 at 07:20 pm by Manila Standard Sports

MARIANO Suba Jr. unleashed a seven-goal effort as reigning titlist San Beda College smothered a hapless Lyceum side, 10-0, and remained unbeaten in the juniors’ division of the 93rd NCAA football tournament at the Rizal Memorial grounds Wednesday night.

Suba went to work early as he knocked in three of his team’s four first half goals and remained in attack mode in the second half where he poured in four more to power the Junior Red Booters to their second straight victory.

Samuel Reuben Chavez, Christopher Villanueva and Roejen Josef Sermese accounted for the other goals of San Beda, which downed Perpetual Help, 6-0, in the opener last Monday.

Letran bested Perpetual Help, 3-0, to likewise nail its second win in a row and a share of the lead.

San Beda Forfeits Two Games in NCAA Football

            Posted at Jan 07 2018 04:25 PM

MANILA, Philippines – Defending champion San Beda College has forfeited two of its games in the NCAA Season 93 men's football tournament, after midfielder Dane Penaflor was found to be ineligible.

That sent the Red Booters skidding from the top spot to fourth place in the Final 4, which begins on Monday at the Rizal Memorial Complex field.

Arellano University's Peter Cayco, who chairs the football tournament's organizing committee, said San Beda sent them a letter admitting that Penaflor was ineligible.

UAAP Football: FEU Clobbers Adamson Behind Andes' Hat-Trick

              ABS-CBN News
              Posted at Feb 22 2018 05:13 PM

MANILA, Philippines – Rico Andes overcame his scoring woes to power Far Eastern University (FEU) to a dominant 7-0 victory over Adamson University in the UAAP Season 80 men's football tournament on Thursday at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.

It was the first time in the tournament that the Tamaraws got full points.

Scoreless in their first four matches, Andes found the back of the net in the 41st, 79th, and 88th minute to help the Tamaraws move up with five points in the table.

Andes, who had six goals in Season 79, became the second player this year to notch a hat-trick. Marvin Briceno of University of Santo Tomas also had three goals during their season opener last February 4 – incidentally, against FEU.

FEU scored two goals near the end of the first half, with Andes and Marole Bungay finding the back on the net.

Alex Rayos Jr. tapped in the ball for another goal in the 58th minute, while Audie Menzi scored a header seven minutes later that opened the floodgates for the Tamaraws.

Andes found an empty net in the 79th minute, followed by a goal by substitute Harold Alcoresa six minutes later to make it 6-0.

UP Withstands Ray Sanciangco Injury, Hands NU Third Loss

Published 14 hours ago on February 22, 2018
                By Lorenzo del Carmen

The University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons maintained their impressive start to the UAAP Season 80 Men’s Football Tournament with a 2-0 victory over the National University Bulldogs, Thursday night at the Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila.

This is State U’s fourth win in four games, and they go top of the standings with 13 points. In stark contrast, this result was NU’s third defeat of the year and the Bulldogs go down to seventh place with four points.

“I thought we played a good first half. Second half we made a lot of lapses sa backline. At least Anton Yared was able to save a few attempts,” said UP coach Anto Gonzales after the match.

State U just needed five minutes to break the deadlock. Rookie Fidel Tacardon, who has been a standout this season for UP, finally scored the first goal of his UAAP career when he dribbled past the Bulldogs defense to give his team the early lead.

UP Keeps Unbeaten Slate, Ateneo Clinches Semis Berth

                    5 Apr, 2018

Rookie Fidel Tacardon netted a hat trick in the first half as league-leading University of the Philippines overpowered winless Adamson, 5-1, in the UAAP Season 80 men's football tournament at the Rizal Stadium.

Tacardon, who now has five goals in the season, led the Maroons in taking a 4-0 lead right in the first half. UP never looked back to maintain their unbeaten run and keep their spot at the top of the bale with 32 points from 10 wins and two draws.

"Even before his first UAAP game, I think the expectations for him to deliver were tremendous. He has been delivering so far. He has been creating scoring opportunities for us. Not just scoring himself, but also creating," said UP coach Anto Gonzales on his prized rookie.

Earlier, reigning MVP Jarvey Gayoso netted a brace as men's titleholder Ateneo joined UP in the semifinals with a 4-0 victory over University of the East.

UST Beats Ateneo to Return to UAAP Football Finals after Six Years

                      26 Apr, 2018

University of Santo Tomas ended a six-year wait to make it to the title round with a 1-0 win over Ateneo in extra time in the UAAP Season 80 men's football tournament Thursday at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.

Conrado Dimacali's header from a saved attempt in the 105th minute put the Growling Tigers in front.

The Blue Eagles tried to equalize and possibly send the match to penalties but Koko Gaudiel's free kick deep in extra time hit the crossbar.

Proud owners of league-best 35 titles, UST will face University of the Philippines, which eliminated De La Salle in the other semifinal, 1-0, in the one-game final next week at the same Malate venue.

"For the players, they deserve to be in the finals because they did everything they could to win. We didn't give up. We didn't give in since the first half," said coach Marjo Allado, after the Tigers secured their first championship appearance since the 2011-12 season.

MANILA, Philippines -- Top-seeded University of the Philippines (UP) clinched their second finals appearance in three seasons after taking down De La Salle University, 1-0, in the UAAP Season 80 men’s football semifinals Thursday evening at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.

After a scoreless first-45 minutes of action, the Fighting Maroons got things going early in the second half, thanks to a masterful finish by Kyle Magdato, who scored off the rebound in the 47th minute of action.

Looking to force an additional 30 minutes of action, La Salle tried to push their offense and managed a number of opportunities to pull even, but ultimately came up short.

UP came dangerously close to doubling their lead when rookie Fidel Tacardon’s cross found Raphael Resuma for the header, but La Salle keeper Ace Villanueva was able to stop the goal in time.

At the end of 90 minutes, the lone goal was enough to vault UP back into the finals.
