  • Philippines Senior National Team Thread Vol. IV

    Previous thread is here.

Castro may have played his last game for Gilas. Won't be surprised if the core of the silver generation such as RDO, Ping, and Chan will follow suit.

The guy is 30. He is still serviceable. An emotional decision, not a logical one if you ask me.

still at his prime of his game at 30. Really no tangible reasons to retire from international competition. No heir apparent yet....unless of course these consecutive heart-breaking losses is taking a toil on him.

It was bound to happen. His game has regressed since the final against China last year. Him retiring is more acceptable than Castro's.

Remember when Chris Tiu officially declared he was retiring from the national team after the 2011 FIBA Asia? That was funny. He had how many stints with the national team (not counting SEA Games)? 1?

And how old was he then? 25? lol

Has Tab officially come out and apologized to the nation for the team's shortcomings? 70 percent of the burden goes to the coaching staff. I did not see Tab making the proper in game decisions and adjustments in the tuneups all the way to the OQT games. Jeez 90 percent of his playbook was just Dray isos or the point guards isos at the top. The people I watched the games with cringed everytime Blatche tried to be Lebron. I dunno but Tab's offense is too predictable its as if he did not have one and dont get me started on the defensive lapses.

In the future Gilas we will have a tall pass-first PG in 6'1 Scottie Tompson and he is also a scorer, a good rebounder for a guard and a good defender(triple double man). Gilas program should also include 6'5 SG Dwight Ramos(18 yrs. old), 6'6 SF Kobe Paras(18 years old) and hopefully a vastly-improve and taller Center/Forward AJ Edu(6'9 16 years old) and Jeremiah Pangalangan(6'10 17 years old) in the future Gilas Pilipinas pool..

Not sure about this. He's in the SMC camp, we all know what happened to Junmar and Japeth. SMC lent them but didn't get enough burn on the floor.

SMC be like Bakit pa ako magpapahiram ng players ko, hindi rin naman gagamitin?

According to the Wikipedia of the SBP "The SBP will hold general elections in April 2016 (supposedly scheduled for January 2016) to elect the possible replacements of Pangilinan and other members of the SBP board". But no news if that election push trough, the replacements should be not from the MVP camp and the SMB camp for unity in Philippines Basketball..

                      Gilas may be feeling betrayed.

I believe no one is saying it out loud, but the players, especially the veteran campaigners are maybe feeling it, hence, the knee-jerk reaction at retiring. All the hard work just to be blindsided for an easy ambush from a gleeful bunch of tall blacks.

I think Abueva might have, could have, served a better purpose... if only to be the "clog" to stem the onrush, or provide the disruptive force to stymie the tempo build-up to an impending rout or just maybe something to ruffle their feather. No one among Gilas at the end of the bench could've provided this or was able to...

It was all too rosy how the tall blacks arranged and essayed the Gilas' ambush-- in hindsight, it might not have been such a bad thought by far and wide for Tab Baldwin to have provided as much thorns as possible along the tall black's way, in order to create as much difficulty... Calvin Abueva's name comes to mind.

TAB for whatever reason, probably knew or had a bad feeling that beating NZ was a tall order, a proposition stacked in a big way against Gilas, reason why he put all the eggs in the basket in their game against France.

Now, if that is so, why did we not see the twin towers summoned, which apparently is Gilas's best weapon, in our game against Les Bleus? Neither have we seen this weapon dutifully practiced, drilled, and perfected to the bone during the preparation stages and the preliminaries?

                      All too confusing.

SM would be ideal. Chito Loyzaga would make for a good program head.

Don't think Hans Sy is interested though. He already has the NU program to worry about.

Should Gilas have Romeo, Parks and Rosario as key core members for the 2019 cycle, we should be fine. The experience those three got from the games vs FRA and NZ should help their development.

Unfortunately, two of those three are PBA players, and the SBP seems pretty adamant that there will be little to no PBA representation thanks to the FIBA BS format, so we shall see.

Can't blame the SBP when the new FIBA qualification games run smack into the PBA season and the Jurassic Commissioner still wants to keep the 3-conference format to keep money flowing. After all, nobody watches regular season games unless it's the popular teams, and everybody watches championship games ESPECIALLY if it's the popular teams.
