None notable, as of now. There are couple of players making a name for themselves in the Collegiate leagues, but they sort of disappear when they move on to the UFL or the National teams.

I checked the ages again, and Azkals standouts MANNY OTT and HIKARU MINEGESHI are only 24-25 years old, so they will be around for awhile. MARK HARTMANN is also only 24, so there is time for him to blossom.

But so far no PHIL YOUNGHUSBAND or STEPHAN SCHROCK quality among the younger players. Schrock is Bundesliga level quality, while Phil is the highest scoring Azkal ever in the history of Philippine Football with 43 Goals. I expect or hope that Phil will hit 50 goals for the Azkals before he retires.

What we really need is a strong youth system so that these players get noticed by foreign scouts. That way, they get the chance to play overseas in much higher competition. Sorry to say but the UFL has a long way to go before it can produce the next generation of Younghusbands and Schrocks.

We will still need the Fil-Foreigners for the National Team for the next decade or so. Hopefully after that our National program will be good enough to allow staffing of more locally developed players in the NT.

2016 AFF SUZUKI CUP: Azkals Post-Mortem, Offense and Defense

            November 27, 2016 rhk111 2016 AFF Suzuki Cup

I just wanted to take a look at the Goals Statistics of the Azkals’ games in the 2016 Asian Football Federation (AFF) Suzuki Cup and try to analyze how well they did both on Offense, and Defense. I am going to limit the data on the Goals only since it is the most important, game deciding factor anyway.

            ‘Data’

Below are the Goals data of all the six games that were played between the three teams in Group A during the Knockout Phase of the 2016 AFF Suzuki Cup:

            Singapore – Azkals, 0-0
            Singapore – Thailand, 0-1
            Singapore – Indonesia, 1-2
            Indonesia – Azkals, 2-2
            Indonesia – Thailand, 2-4
            Azkals – Thailand, 0-1

            ‘Defense’

            * Total Number of Goals Allowed – The Azkals allowed a total of three Goals in three games, which is worst than Singapore and Thailand who only allowed two Goals in the same number of games. In this metric, Indonesia was actually the worst after allowing seven Goals in three games.

            * Number of Games Where Opponents Scored Goals – In this metric, the Azkals allowed their opponents to score in two of its three games. This is the same number as Singapore and Indonesia. Thailand was the best, allowing only one opponent to score against them, which is Indonesia.

            * Defense Verdict – Based on the observations above, I would say that the Azkals are just average in terms of defense compared to the other teams. They are in the middle in terms of the Total Number of Goals Allowed, and the same as most teams in terms of the Number of Games Where Opponents Scored Goals.

Soccer in the Philippines Scrambles for a Toehold, With an American Leading the Way

By JOHN DUERDEN NOV. 23, 2016

MANILA — Thomas Dooley has bad memories of the 1998 World Cup. He was a player with the United States back then, when the team lost all three of its games in France. After the tournament, FIFA ranked the 32 participants; it put the Americans last.

“We had no team spirit, no positive team energy — nothing,” Dooley said. “After the coach announced the roster, we got the bonus and then there was just selfishness. The players didn’t listen anymore. They were against each other. The coach lived in a different hotel. Everything was negative. I didn’t want to be a part of it, and I wanted to go home.”

Dooley has little time to follow U.S. Soccer’s activities these days, not even the departure of Jurgen Klinsmann, who briefly brought Dooley back into the national team fold in 2011 to help him coach his first match, a friendly against Mexico. Dooley has his own leadership concerns now: As head coach of the Philippines national team, he is busy trying to prevent another first-round exit.

The event in question is the Suzuki Cup, Southeast Asia’s biennial championship and a big deal — especially as no team from the region has been to the World Cup since 1938, when Indonesia participated as the Dutch East Indies. With 2 points from its first two games, against Singapore and Indonesia, the Philippines has to defeat Thailand, the defending champion, on Friday to be assured of a place in the semifinals.

Dooley, who won the Bundesliga title with Kaiserslautern in 1991, wants the win, the semifinal berth and the trophy. That could help bring an even bigger prize: an opportunity to help soccer compete with basketball in the Philippines, a sprawling archipelago that is home to more than 100 million people and was a United States colony from 1898 to 1946.

Next door to the Quezon City hotel where the Philippine team is staying this week is the Araneta Coliseum, which in 1975 hosted the Thrilla in Manila, in which Muhammad Ali defeated Joe Frazier. These days it plays host to basketball, and on the biggest nights, more than 20,000 pack inside to watch the games. The equivalent showdowns in the country’s national soccer league regularly struggle to attract four-figure crowds.

Basketball is still king here. The N.B.A. opened an office in April, and there are three official N.B.A. stores in the country. The big European soccer clubs that visit Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Shanghai and Bangkok on their summer tours do not make it to Manila. In the lobby of the official hotel here, even the branded Suzuki Cup television in the corner is showing women’s basketball from the United States.

“We are not a soccer country, simple as that,” said Cedelf Tupas, a sports reporter for The Philippine Daily Inquirer. “It is easy to play basketball in Manila.” While he praised the rising standards in the soccer league, he said: “People don’t watch. It is not promoted.”

Events like the Suzuki Cup may help, but that depends on how Dooley’s team performs. After a disastrous record from 1996 to 2008, a period in which they lost 19 of 21 games, the Azkals, as the Philippine team is known, have reached the semifinals on the last three occasions. This time, it wants to play in the final.

“Every win is another log on the fire,” said Dooley, who was hired in February 2014 after the father of a boy he was coaching in California alerted the Philippines Football Federation to his availability. “Although it doesn’t help that much. There are so many things we need, the organizational things.”

In the nearly three years since Dooley took the job, there have been improvements. “Now we have nice bags, the backpacks,” he said. “At the airport, everyone looks the same with the uniforms. We used to look like a bunch of tourists.” But there is still something missing.

Schrock announces on his Facebook account that his going back to Germany. His stay here really was to try to help the Azkals win the Suzuki Cup, but that hasn't happened. A truly heroic effort on his part, sad to see him go.

Nice reads about the future of the Azkals here:

? It was supposed to be a dream. Now it’s more like a nightmare for Philippine football. The Philippines failed to qualify for the Semi Finals of the Suzuki Cup for the first time since 2008 d…

In Part One?I talked about the postmortem of the Philippines’ exit in the Suzuki Cup and how Philippine Football hit a ceiling years ago. Yes, playing Phil Younghusband in midfield left the Azkals …

We can really use more futsal tournaments in the country to quell the notion that football requires a huge amount of space which is a bit of a premium here in the Philippines. The best football players in the world played football as kids in spaces much smaller than a regular basketball court.

Regulation futsal courts are slightly bigger than regulation basketball courts, but the latter shall suffice. Assign two endpoints as goalposts, get a volleyball, a flattened basketball, or even a good old tin can and you're good.

PFL is a good step moving forward. city based league. UFL merging with PFL. teams that has good financial status can buy some reserve or squad roatation players from other asian football leagues to boost the competition. they can also get players from division 3 players from europe and some division 2 from south american countries. thus this will make the competition better, plus it'll help the local pinoys to improve their game by playing against some division 2 and division 3 players from other countries. hope in the future we can see some pinoy clubs playing in afc champions league.

Priority now for the PFF should be to search for the next generation of Azkals in anticipation of the retirement of the Younghusbands and Schrock in a couple more years.
Hopefully,by next year Coach Dooley and Dan could already inject younger players on the Azkals squad in preparation for the Asian Cup qualifier and if ever we can make it to Asian Cup in UAE in 2019.

Some of them are already in contact with sir Dan, its just that some of them are not yet ready to give their commitment to the Philippines.

CB Jesper Nyholm will be playing for AIK football next season, AIK plays in the Allsvenskan league in Sweden and is one of the top teams there. Michael Kempter play for FC Zurich, Francesco Posarelli from Fiorentina Youth system. Coach Dooley already gave some of our homegrown players a bit of experience by using them in our Friendlies and Suzuki Cup. Aside from Amani Aguinaldo,Daisuke Sato,Porteria all under-22, Daniel Gadia,Paolo Bugas, Marco Casambre - still 17yrs old have appeared for us this year for the Azkals.
