Veteran shooter Cho Sung-Min withdraws from NT participation due to ailing ankles. Hur Jae will decide if he may or may not call up another player to replace Cho.

Sung-Min's withdrawal leaves Korea with one less three point specialist as Lee Jung-Hyun also withdrew. Only Heo Il-Young and Kang Sangjae remain as three point specialists.

The NT team looks new as Yang Dong-Geun withdrew also and with Cho also out, their back-court since 2010 is gone.

In watching the replay of the Korea - BYUH Asia Pacific Cup, Lee Jong-Hyun has an improving mid-range game that he often mixes up with his screen and roll game. Despite Jong-Hyun's improvement, teammate Kang Sang-Jae has even better range, drilling six three pointers.

After FIBA Asia U18 tournament, Kyongbokgo's 16 year old Yang Jae-Min (200cm / SF) will play professional basketball in Spain. Fuenlabrada has offered a 1 year deal while Real Madrid Baloncesto offered a multi-year, partially guaranteed contract.

According to sources, Yang Jae-Min is "closer" in signing with Torrelodones over Real Madrid or Fuenlabrada. Real Madrid is not really known for developing youth, but "poaching" them from smaller competitors.

            Observations VS Egypt

            - Hur Hoon's lack of experience on PG hurt the team in the 1st and 2nd quarter. Hur Jae benched Kim Sun-Hyung early and let his son, Hoon run the team. Hoon often dribbled and set the offense on the opposition's strong side of the defense, leading into heavily contested shots and did not call much screen action when confronted with a defensive split scenario on the baseline.

Although Hoon has seen a bit of flashes of brilliance in his quick passing, he is learning the hardway as he gets pushed around by Egypt's veteran, Elgammal.

            - Kim Sun-Hyung needs more minutes. Korea's offense ignited in the 3rd quarter when he was playing. Quick 7 point swing in two minutes after his steal and layup. Lee Jae-Do has yet to see action and most likely do so against USA later.

            - Choi Jin-Soo brings nothing to the table, especially when you have Kang Sangjae in the roster. Kang is the better shooter and rebounder. Kang is quicker and knows how to play the screen game, compared to Choi, who waits around for the open shot.

            - Lee Seung-Hyun played SF exclusively due to him showing up with the NT, 15lbs lighter and has been working on his dribbling during the summer. Lee's shooting is the primary reason why Hur Jae trusts him on the SF role. Lee on SF allows Hur Jae to field in a bigger Korea frontline with Lee Jong-Hyun and Kim Jong-Kyu.

            - Kim Junil needs more minutes. Can shoot just as well as Lee Seung-Hyun at PF.

            - Hur Jae does not encourage his centers to shoot and makes them focus on setting screens and rolling to the basket, maintaining the team's Box-1 defense as a primary defensive setup.

Choi Joon-Young of Yonsei is out of the national team due to an injury. Seoul SK's Byun Ki-Hoon, who played in the Jones Cup before being cut will replace Choi.

Choi has been disappointing for Korea since last year and his non-inclusion is not a huge loss. Byun, is much more ready for FIBA tournaments as he showed good three point shooting during the Jones Cup and is better defender.

                          Game 1 Final: Korea 65 - 59 Tunisia

Korea was off to a fast start in the first half with Hur Jae using most of the flex offense in getting Cho Sung-Min those catch and shoot motion. Game standout is Lee Seung-Hyun, who proved to be very competitive against players who were 208cm and 204cm in his coverage. Lee used mobility, heft and tenacity to finish with 14pts and 14rebs.

Korea survived the 3rd and 4th quarter rally due to team play with their sustained offense operating on a 1-4 high flex system.

Offense looks pretty sharp, at least from highlights. Korean style is always about lots of perimeter movement, off-ball screens in baseline or weak side, 3 pointers and fast breaks, something a lot of teams can learn from.

However without a rim protector down low Korea will always be a vulnerable team. Will be interesting to see how they perform in FIBA Asia Challenges, on paper they are likely top 3.
