  • South Korea NT 2016 - 2018

Recently, the Korean Basketball Association reformed internally to appoint officers from the KBL, KUBL and High-School varsity associations into a cabinet for closer coordination when it comes to both administrative and domestic coordination when it comes to organizing national teams and local competitions.

This is a move related to the "recommendations" sent by FIBA, questioning the structure that the KBA operated where it was deemed less efficient.

Thus, the Korea Republic Basketball Association was formed in late January, culminating with a press conference that announced the reformation of the basketball federation. Korea Republic Basketball Association will still be known as the KBA.

Under this structure and model - which was approved by FIBA, will aim to better accomplish what the old KBA had trouble accomplishing, which was mainly finances. Ironic given the fact that the national basketball teams have no long term sponsors in the land where giants such as Kia, Hyundai, Samsung, Korean Ginseng, Kookmin and LG are located.

This year, the KBA will appoint a long term national team coach for the men and women instead of the annual appointments which was normally given to whoever coaches the champions of the KBL and the WKBL.

The campaign will start at the FIBA Asia Challenge, formerly the FIBA Asia Cup where the KBA will form a commission to select the national team coach, his assistants and name the player pool.

But according to the news, whom ever the KBA will appoint as the coach for the FIBA Asia Challenge will not necessarily be the long term coach to pilot the team towards the new FIBA Asia format for qualifications to the 2019 World Cup in China.

This early, finances are a problem but the KBA is working on it.

Why does the KBA have difficulty securing sponsors? Do the industrial giants have trust issues with the people managing their federation? Or is basketball a less profitable venture compared to football?

Two main factors come to mind:

One is marginal returns for whom ever sponsor the national basketball team. In Korea where conglomorates have gone global, companies like Samsung, LG, KGC see very little return of investment when sponsoring the national team -- despite these companies maintaining their respective KBL teams. The maintenance of KBL teams is to simply have a market stance. Say for example the tech rivalries of Samsung and LG, the Telco presence of SK vs KT.

The last major sponsor for the NT was KIA in 2011 while NIKE just supplied the gear. That year, KIA had more traction in sponsoring Figure Skaters over the NT.

Then basketball's failing popularity where hardly anyone watches the basketball NT.

My guess for the pool of players:

        Lee Jong-Hyun - Korea University
        Kang Sangjae - Korea University
        Choi Jun-Young - Yonsei University
        Cheon Ki-Beom - Yonsei University
        Hur Hoon - Yonsei University
        Kim Jong-Kyu - LG Sakers
        Oh Se-Keun - Anyang KGC
        Lee Jung-Hyun - Anyang KGC
        Park Chan-Hee Anyang KGC
        Kim Giyun - Anyang KGC
        Moon Seonggon - Anyang KGC
        Lee Seung-Hyun - Goyang Orions
        Choi Jin-Soo - Goyang Orions
        Jang Jae-Seok - Goyang Orions
Ha Seung-Jin - Jeonju KCC Egis
Kim Ji-Hu - Jeonju KCC Egis
Song Kyochang - Jeonju KCC Egis
Doo Kyung-Min - Wonju Dongbu Promy
Hur Ung - Wonju Dongbu Promy
        Han Hee-Won - Incheon Elephants
        Jeong Hyeo-Geun - Incheon Elephants
Kim Sun-Hyung - Seoul SK Knights
Lee Jae-Do - Busan Sonicboom KT
        Kim Jun-iL - Samsung Thunder
Kim Si-Rae - LG Sakers / Armed Forces
Lee Dae-Sung - Ulsan Mobis / Armed Forces
        Yang Jae-Min - Kyongbokgo HS

Yang Dong-Geun is widely considered retired and Korea needs to rebuild after FIBA Asia 2015. Kim Tae-Sol could return provided that he is healthy after the KBL finals. Park Chan-Hee is thirty years old while protege Kim Giyun this season had a breakout year.

According to rumors NT head coach candidates are: Kim Seunggi (KGC), Choo IL-Seung (Orions) and Choo Seung-Geun (KCC).

Kim Seunggi of KGC runs a Pinwheel Offense that places emphasis on sharp cuts and slanted screens to free shooters while the screens are aimed to throw off the defense to free a shooter or the diving big man to the basket.

Choo Il-Seung runs a Dribble Drive Offense with an emphasis on mobile big men (Seung-Hyun, Dong-Wook and Jae-Seok) to actively set screens to set themselves up for a trailer play or a wide open jumpshot. Designated creators include Jackson, Haynes, Tae-Jong and Hyun-Min to create situations basing on the defensive gaps opened up by the screens.

Choo Seung-Geun runs a modern 4-1 Dribble Attack offense where it could sometimes go without a post player or utilise a float scenario where big men even go as far as beyond the arc to set screens to really open up driving lanes. Unlike the modern dribble drive that aims to open up shooters with a dribble entry, Seung-Geun's offense is wired for high percentage drives via the baseline or the quick feeds to a trailing big man. Ha Seung-Jin has remarkably thrived under this setup. Shooters here await at the corner, waiting for a quick pass.

Roster for the South Korea University Basketball All-Stars that will tour Japan starting from May 10 - May 15 to play against their Japanese university counterparts.

              Hur Hoon (Yonsei)
              Kim Nak-Hyeon (Korea University)
              Cheon Ki-Bum (Yonsei)
              Park Ji-Hun (Chung Ang)
              Lee Seung-Kyu (Chosun)
              Choi Jun-Young (Yonsei)
              Kang Sang-Jae (Korea University)
              Byeon Jun-Young (Dongguk)
              Jang Moon-Ho (Konkuk)
              Lee Jong-Hyun (Korea University)
              Park Cheol-Uk (Chung Ang)
              Ahn Jeong-Hoon (Sangmyung)

Probably the strongest collegiate all-star team assembled ever since the batch of Oh Se-Keun, Kim Sun-Hyung, Kim Jong-Kyu and Kim Min-Goo back in 2012. There are a lot of KBL Draft bound seniors for 2016, namely Lee Jong-Hyun and Choi Jun-Young.

KBA released a statement regarding the national team head coach.

The KBA will appoint a new head coach under a three year contract that will span July 2016 - November 2019. That coach will have a "progressive pool" for the national team that will include HS, College and KBL stars in regards with the players.

Progressive meaning, the player pool may add new players that emerges within the HS, KUBL and KBL ranks.

Min-Goo is no longer the same player after his comeback in 2015 after his car accident. The lateral movement, quickness and lift that made him an all-star is no longer there. He is more of a spot-up shooter now.

Lee Jung-Hyun of Anyang KGC, their best three point shooter is recovering from an injury. After 10 years, Yang Dong-Geun was cut. Oh Se-Keun is also out but Yang and Oh according to Hur Jae can still return for 2017.

Incheon's Park Chan-Hee withdraws from NT training due to an injury suffered while practicing with Anyang KGC. KBA named Yonsei's 180cm guard Hur Hoon as a replacement.

Hur Hoon joins brother, Hur Ung of Wonju with the NT, that is coached by Hur Jae, their father.
