  • 2016 U20 European Championship - Finland

It seems that Bayern Munich's head-coach Svetislav Pešić, GM Marko Pešić and assistant-coach Oliver Kostić were forced to go to extensive effort to personally convince 6'10" Bosnian Serb PF Dejan Kovačević (late '96) to pick Germany over Serbia and have recently granted him with his first ever appearance in German League. For his part, Oliver Kostić, who is also in charge of Bayern's B squad where he works with Kovačević on a daily basis, has also been awarded with a quick integration into German Basketball Federation youth program.

Let's hope that the Basketball Federation of Serbia and head-coach Aleksandar Bućan will have the audacity to call up IPFW's 6'5" swingman John Konchar ('96) and St.Joseph's 6'10" bigman Nick Rakočević (late '97) to the Serbia U20 peliminary roster. To me, a low risk and potentially high reward move.

If I were in charge of the Great Britain U20 national team, I would invite 6'2" Spanish PG Andrew Ramirez-Mountain ('97) to join with the squad to increase competition for the starting point guard spot. As his mother is British, he has dual citizenship.

Though the matches are less than 7 months away, it's not unreasonable to think that Croatia U20's roster could look somewhat different. Barring injury, the core group, Dragan Bender, Ante Toni Žižić, Marko Arapović, Ivica Zubac, Lovro Mazalin and Nik Slavica are almost certainties to be in the roster, but this summer's Olympics and the ealier start of the Olympic Qualifying Tournaments could provide other surprise absences and additions. Depending on the possible hosts the Olympic Qualifying Tournaments, Croatia as the 2nd best non-qualified team for Europe could be invited to participate.
In that case, Croatia U20's frontcourt could be weakened if Croatia's senior National Team head-coach decides to call up Ante Toni Žižić ('97), Dragan Bender ('97) and maybe Ivica Zubac ('97) to his preliminary lineup. Players like Duke Blue Devils' 7'1" freshman C Antonio Vranković ('96) or Spire Institue's 6'9" post graduate PF Marko Ćuže ('97) could perhaps be decent backups respectively to Zubac and Arapović. Otherwise, Vranković will be able to workout during the offseason in order to earn more playing time as sophomore next season, while Ćuže who has a several NCAA D1 offers may consider playing for Bosnia U20 as he is native of Herzegovina.

Weighing in at 250 pounds, Al Wakrah's 6'11" Bosnia-born Qatari C Emir Mujkić ('97) has the legitimate size of a true NBA/Euroleague center, which makes him bigger and stronger than the current Bosnia-Herzegovina U20's center duo Polutak/Lončar. He also is a nice finisher, shooting a ridiculous 74% on 2-pt attempts near the rim in the Qatari Basketball League. However he is a tragic free-throw shooter at this point and doesn't have the lenght (average wingspan and standing reach for his size) and the leaping ability to become a good rim protector.

6'5" American of Serbian ancestry SG John Konchar ('96), who was recently named Summit League First Team as a freshman, registered his 13th double-double of the season in NCAA with with 16 points on 7/11 FG, 16 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 assists in IPFW 86-70 victory over South Dakota in Summit League Tournament quarterfinal.

To date, uber atheltic Konchar (originally Končar which means wire maker or/and wire seller) is averaging 12.9 points on 59.1% (inclunding 43.8% from the 3 point line), 9,1 boards (which is terrific for a guard), 2.7 assists and 1.8 steals per game. http://espn.go.com/mens-college-bask...2/john-konchar

Despite the fact that he demonstrates a true interest in playing for Serbia in FIBA competitions and that his father is in touch with the Vice-President of the Basketball Federation of Serbia Igor Rakocevic for more than a year, he still hasn't been granted Serbian citizenship contrary to former Crvena Zvezda's guards DeMarcus Nelson and Charles Jenkins who have no family inks with Serbia. Go Figure!

Compared to previous years, 6'11" PF/C Nick Rakocevic ('97) has gained weight, bulked his upper body up and his playing much closer to the rim. He averaged almost 20 points, 14 boards and 4 blocks per game during his high school league regular season.

Italian Basketball Fed. has announced a preliminary player-pool for next mini-camp on March 21-22.

                Players list here

Two big names missing for the time being, Federico Mussini (who's engaged at St. John's, NCAA) and Diego Flaccadori (he's currently playing with Trento in Italian League). Hopefully they will join later on. Mussini is currently the 2nd best scorer at St. Johns's and leads the team in assists and steals (but unfortunately also in turnovers).

Our 96-97 generation talent pool is so deep and the guys are doing very well in their teams so far. The coach will have difficulty in choosing the final roster.

PG: Kadir Bayram - İsmail Cem Ulusoy - Berk Uğurlu - Ege Havsa - Mertcan Solkol
SG: Furkan Korkmaz - Enes Taşkıran - Yiğit Arslan - Oğulcan Baykan - Erten Gazi - Rıdvan Öncel - Kaan Sarıslan
SF: Tolga Geçim - Okben Ulubay - Egehan Arna - Mert Çevik - Erkan Yılmaz
PF: Berkan Durmaz - Ege Arar - Barış Ãœlker - Ercan Bayrak - Mehmet Alemdaroğlu - Arber Berisha
C: Metehan Akyel - Egemen Güven - Ayberk Olmaz

Most probably the team will consist of bold the bold ones. Very strong roster, there is no excuse for coach at all.

Sports is not only considered as a superiority of physical capability. Perception, intelligence and morality assist it as well. The strong with less intelligence and comprehension can not cope with the less strong but with sufficient intelligence and comprehension. I like the sportsman who is intelligent, agile as well as morally upright.

Prospect High School's 6'8" senior Lukas Swidler (late '97) could be a nice addition to German U20 frontcourt. Swidler is a poor man's Kevin Love (without Love's 3-pt range and wingspan) who mostly relies on his bounce and brute strength to bully high-school teens inside the paint but may struggle against higher level of competition where he will face taller and stronger post players due to lack of outside shooting and overall skills.

Capo d'Orlandino's 6'7" swingman Vojislav Stojanovic ('97) will likely miss the U20 European Championship after suffering a season-ending injury (severe ankle sprain which will require close to 3 months of rest and maybe a surgery) few days ago.

Nonetheless, Serbian U20 NT backcourt can still count on several talented players such as Barcelona's Peno, Partizan's Marinkovic, FMP's Lazarevic or Mega's Radovan Djokovic and Simic.

6'11" PF/C Nick Rakocevic ('97)has committed to High Major program USC where he will play next to rising senior Nikola Jovanovic. I believe Jovanovic will be the perfect mentor to help Nick to adapt to college life and basketball.
