  • Argentina NT 2016

    Good read: http://www.rio2016.com/es/noticias/e...-para-rio-2016

I recommend it as it describes the next generation being mentored by the likes of Scola in Rio.

Campazzo, Laprovitolla, Brussino, Delia, Deck, Garino and Gallizzi are next up and will only get better as they harness more seasons.

Ginobili-Scola-Nocioni that trio will play in their 4th Olympics together (2004-2008-2012-2016).Thats remarkable to me,usually there is only one player in generation that is able to play 4 straight Olympics.

With that trio in lineup Argentina made atleast semifinal in every world competion they played together (2002,2004,2006,2008,2012).This will surely be farewell tournament to this Golden Argentina team.

One of the most competitive character team i have ever seen.

One of the often forgotten games that in my opinion showed how good that Argentina team was took place in the 2003 fiba Americas tournament. Coming off the historic win over the USA in 2002, they next met again in the preliminary round of the fiba Americas the following year. A loaded USA team that had revenge on their mind was taken to the wire in a very close game. And although they got blown out later in the championship game they proved a point and set the stage for the following year in the Olympics when the USA sent a weaker team and was thoroughly outclassed and beaten by Argentina.

Yes, I actually remember that game (I have it on VHS tape!). What's interesting is that the 2003 USA Team exhibited the same deficiencies defensively that doomed so many US squads of that era. Despite all the firepower they possessed, they simply couldn't defend Argentina's continuity offense, and I remember being on the edge of my seat as Ginobili, Lopez, Scola, Delfino and the rest carved up the US with an endless array of backdoor cuts and slick interior passes. Ultimately, the US put together enough plays to stay ahead and win, but their narrow victory reinforced the flaws (2002 embarrassment) and foreshadowed (2004 struggles) the events that led up to USA Basketball ousting the incompetent Stu Jackson and his committee and bringing in Coach K and Jerry Colangelo to right the ship. The '03 team on paper was far superior than the 2004 Olympic product, and had its members gone on to represent the US in Athens they probably would've won gold...but USA Basketball would've still been broken as far as its philosophy and approach to international basketball. A 2004 gold medal would've only delayed the inevitable. Eventually had we kept the same blueprint (throwing all-star teams together and expecting them to gel seamlessly) the 2008 and 2012 titles would've never materialized. Thankfully we're at a point now where American players have a deeper understanding and better appreciation for FIBA basketball...due in large part to Argentina and the ass-kickings they handed us back then.

It's funny even before this Argentinian golden generation they have always competed well against the USA. In the 1986 worlds they were the only team that defeated the gold medal USA team doing what the Petrovic led Yugoslavian and Sabonis led Soviet teams could not do. And in the opening game of the 1996 Olympics against an unbelievably powerful USA squad they trailed by only 2 points at halftime and by only a dozen with about 7 minutes to play before the USA pulled away. Other than the final against Serbia that was the toughest game the USA had.

Yes...Argentina has a history of giving us fits. They've been exceptional at exploiting the US defensively in three phases: 1) Limiting turnovers 2) Slowing down the tempo 3) Spacing their offense

From the glory of representing Argentina to the satisfaction of winning the NBA Finals, Manu Ginobili's career was defined by his love of team.
