GW vs Japan NT game 1 today.

Yuta Watanabe suiting up for GW and is a manifest of how we would have never made progress with his game had he turned pro in the NBL.

George Washington won 88-61 over Japan NT. Yuta Watanabe 15pts and 9rebs vs Japan. Japan almost had nothing going inside and their front-court. Most of the points were generated by the guards like Tsuji and Tanaka.

After the series vs GW where Japan lost all threw games, the team needs the following:

Centers - Ota is very slow and was often outrebounded by younger and more athletic front-court of GW. Kota Yamamoto and Kai Morishita should have been considered. Yuya Nagayoshi is too short and unskilled.

Two way wingers - Add a rebounding wings like Ryumo Ono or Takahiro Kurihara to join Harimoto and Mitsuhara.

JBA announced a 68 man player pool for the national team's FIBA Asia 2017 and beyond preparations. The pool consists stars of the B-League, players in the United States (Hachimura, Watanabe) and HS players that will have an active schedule for participation with the national team training camp stretched across 2017.

First one is this mid-December and early January where 25 players are invited for each for each of the session. JBA is now forming an off-season training schedule for the NT after the B-League playoffs.

The following HS & College prospects practiced with the Team A training camp this week: Daniel Nana, Kohei Takahashi, Gen Hiraiwa, Natsuki Noguchi, Kai Morishita, Kiharu Ozawa, and Yusei Sugiura. Avg age are 19yrs of age for these prospects. All are big-men, in which Luca Pavicevic is addressing the big man problem of the future as early as now.

195cm Yudai Baba although listed as SF, actually plays SG and PG.

Japan will host EABA 2017 and the roster will be announced sometime in March. B-League season to conclude late in May 2017, so the national team members -- from eliminated teams can practice together.

In watching the split series replay of Japan vs Iran friendlies, Luka Pavicevic runs a double motion high-screen offense with the Takeuchi twins + Ira Brown helming that horns set. Both twins can shoot outside and are mobile, so it makes sense to have them roll up high and set in simultaneous fashion a high-staggered screen and an elevator screen. This allows the ball-handler to create in between panel, find a flanking shooter or shoot a mostly easy baseline shot. For Ira Brown, Pavicevic has him rolling to the basket immediately as the ball-hanlder brushes shoulder with the adjacent screener, mostly for alley-oop opportunities or have Brown in the best position to crash the glass.

Interesting part is that Japan's top gunners Makoto Hiejima and Kosuke Kanamaru somewhat struggled in this offense setup. From years in seeing them play, both are heavy ISO players who has tunnel vision and are often distracted on how the opposing defense or the team offense develop under a screen. It can be noted that under the previous NT coach, Kenji Hasegawa utilised screen to free up Hiejima and Kanamaru to score. Under Pavicevic, he would like the ball-handlers to create opportunities by taking up the screen or start a mis-direction set when they veer on opposite floor of the screen.

This is where Togashi excelled and its growing comfortably under the system of Pavicevic as Togashi has always been a quick reader of the offense with his quick playmaking pedigree that honed further with the Texas Legends. Togashi directed the offense well, often sizing up defenders that are caught staggered by the blind-screen and allows him to shoot his signature square up. What I would like to see Togashi develop is how he calls upon a staggered screen to develop the inverse play that comes up upon using a screen to start a misdirection; this means probing into the baseline and aligning a tri-corner in between him and the shooter as well as the re-posting big-man.

This set of Pavlicevic makes good use of Japan's forwards: Hashimoto, Harimoto, Ono, Mitsuhara, Baba and Nagayoshi. Once Watanabe and Hachimura comes in within the near future, they will add an interesting mix of short burst drives and step away threes. Matsui and Furukawa; one of the best in Japan when it comes to catch and shoot, will also be ideal into this mix.
