Comelec: No voting in malls owned by candidates
MANILA, Philippines – Voting will not be allowed in shopping malls owned by candidates or those associated with them.
This is to avoid conflict of interest and to allay suspicion of bias, according to Commission on Elections (Comelec) Chairman Andres Bautista.
“Under the law, it is prohibited to use a private establishment as polling place if that is owned by a candidate or a supporter of a candidate,” he said.
Bautista was interviewed yesterday at the SM Aura in Taguig, where he oversaw the satellite registration for senior citizens and people with disability.
The Comelec has been taking precautions to ensure that satellite registration and possible mall voting will not be tainted by politics, Bautista said.
