Egypt look forward to U19 Worlds challenge

CAIRO (2015 FIBA U19 World Championship) - Egypt head into the 2015 FIBA U19 World Championship predominantly looking to take the difficult challenge head on and continue the program's on-going development.

Egypt head coach Branislav Jemc knows his FIBA Africa U18 Championship-winning team will not be considered one of the contenders. And the veteran Serbian knows his team will face a stiff challenge in Greece, where they were drawn into Group A with the talent-laden USA and Croatia as well as Asian stronghold Iran.

"It's obvious that we are not one of the favorites," Jemc said matter-of-factly.

"But it's a great challenge for us to compete with strong and great teams that have players of that caliber which will later reach NBA level."

The main thing is that Jemc expects his team to give 100 percent.

"We'll try to give our best effort and demonstrate our talent," said the coach.

Just the fact that Egypt will play in Crete is important for the basketball leaders in the country.

"The Basketball Federation of Egypt in its basketball development strategy for youth teams has the goal to qualify and participate in world championships and in that way to directly follow the development and new trends in world's basketball," said Jemc.

When asked about his expectations for the U19 Worlds, the coach replied: "The expectations are to show our quality and talent, and to demonstrate modern trends in youth basketball."

Jemc will call his team together for the first time after the Egyptian youth championship takes place in mid-April. He expects the main leaders from the teams that played at the 2014 FIBA Africa U18 Championship and 2014 FIBA U17 World Championship to play major roles again in Greece.

One player who will not play in late June and early July is Rauf Elsafvani because of school duties.

Jemc is particularly looking forward to mid-May when Mohamed Abdelrahmen returns to Egypt from his studies in the United States. The coach is anxious to see where his main leader from both the U18 and U17 teams last summer is development-wise.

"He is one of the team leaders. He possesses undeniable talent to create and he is one the most important players on the national team," said Jemc.

"After the U17 World Championship, the weaknesses that he needs to improve were pointed out to him, especially in individual techniques and individual tactics, and we had worked on that."

But that was before Abdelrahmen left for the USA.

"Considering that in the fall of 2014 he went to America to study, I don't currently know how much he did progress. Since I know that he likes to work and practice, I believe he made progress and thereby he will improve our game."

Jemc is hoping Abdelrahmen can improve Egypt's game enough to be competitive in Greece.

Ahmed Marei- The New Coach for Egyptian National Team

          Egypt

Amr Aboul Kheir led Egypt to an unexpected second-place at AfroBasket 2013, but after a modest 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup campaign,
in which they lost all their five games, the Egyptian Basketball Federation picked Josep 'Pepe' Claros as their new coach.
But last month they decided to work with a national coach, choosing former Olympian Ahmed Marei.

Nevertheless, Marei and the federation are yet to formalise their agreement.

                Siauliai signs Assem Marei

BC Siauliai (LKL) signed 23-year old Egyptian international forward Assem Marei (206-113kg-92). He just graduated from Minn.St.-Mankato (NCAA2). In 20 games he had very impressive stats: 19.3ppg, 8.6rpg, 1.3apg and 1.8bpg last season. He helped them to end the regular season as a second best team in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. They also advanced to the league semifinals. Quite impressive season as he was named to All-NSIC 1st Team.
As mentioned above Marei is just out of the college and it will be his first season as a pro.
The list of the past achievements is quite long as among others his college team won NSIC Tournament for two years in a row (2013 and 2014).
Marei has been also a member of Egyptian international program for some years. He has regularly played for Egyptian senior team since 2011 and previously for U19 National Team in 2011. Marei represented Egypt at the Afrobasket Championships in Rades (Tunisia) this year. His stats at that event were 7 games: 10.1ppg, Reb-5 (8.4rpg), 2.6apg, FGP: 44.1%, FT: 47.5%.
Marei has played previously for another Lithuanian team Zamalek.

Egypt’s Oraby sets eyes on the future

CAIRO (AfroBasket 2015) - Egypt missed out on long-term goal of qualifying for next summer Olympic Games, but Omar Oraby feels their future looks bright.

The youngest team - averaging 24 years old - at the 16-team AfroBasket 2015 held last August in Rades, Tunisia, Egypt finished with a similar record (6-1) to eventual champions Nigeria.

They claimed the fifth-place in Africa’s flagship basketball tournament, but the general feeling is that they could have done a lot better.

An 83-63 defeat to Angola in the Quarter-Finals ended Egypt’s hope of securing at least a place in the 2016 FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament, however, it is the future that matters for the North Africans.

“We are young, talented, and our next goal is to qualify for the World Cup [2019],” Oraby said to FIBA.com.

The 2.18m center provided Egypt with an impressive rim protection, averaging 1.3 blocks per game, but, it is the team success that keeps Oraby going.

“What we achieved in Tunisia was a starting point for the future our national team,” he noted.

We built a great chemistry, and hopefully we will continue to play together in the years to come - Oraby

With the AfroBasket 2015 done and dusted for another two years, the former standout at Southern California University who currently plays for Egypt side Gezira, sets his eyes on the future of his basketball career.

And, he has some high goals.

After playing for the Houston Rockets in the 2014 Summer League, and trying to become the first Egypt-born to play in the NBA, Oraby felt he had the necessary exposure for a professional basketball career.

However, in a turn of events, the 24-year-old saw his professional basketball career delayed.

“On my return to Egypt I was conscripted into the Army, which prevented me from leaving the country,” he recalled.

“Then I got a training camp offer from the Los Angeles Lakers but I couldn’t go due to my military obligations.

“But I finish my service obligation in August 2016 and I will try to resume my basketball career overseas,” he pointed out.

Next up for Oraby is the upcoming African Champions Cup (ACC), which will run from 10-20 December in Luanda, Angola.

And if he is cleared to play - after suffering two broken bones in the face during the 2015 All-Africa Games last September - he aims to start paving his way

                    to a professional basketball overseas.

Khalaf signing with Manresa a bet on future for both sides

REGENSBURG (David Hein’s Eye on the Future) - Ahmed Khalaf and Spanish basketball club l’iCL Manresa both took a leap of faith - with both hoping for a major payout in the future.

If you’re a young player from a non-traditional basketball country looking to take your game to another level, there are two popular choices.

One is to go to high school or college in the United States. And the other is go to Europe, like the 16-year-old Khalaf has chosen to do.

The talented young Egyptian center signed a long-term deal with Manresa and is taking the Old Continent route to improving his game. Manresa is a mid-level Liga Endesa club who decided they needed to strike early if they wanted to get a player with the potential of Khalaf.

The Giza native had showcased his skill-set the past two summers, playing at the 2014 FIBA U17 World Championship as a 15-year-old and more than holding his own with 8.8 points, 9.3 rebounds and 4.9 blocks per game.

This past summer, Khalaf was three years younger than the rest of the competition at the 2015 FIBA U19 World Championship and the 2.04m big man was outstanding with 8.3 points, 8.4 rebounds and 2.9 blocks a contest.

Khalaf topped off his summer by guiding Egypt back to the 2016 U17 Worlds by averaging 14.8 points, 12.2 rebounds and 5.6 blocks as Egypt won the title at the 2015 FIBA Africa U16 Championship.

"We saw that he has good intuition on rebounding and a possibility to grow as a player,” Manresa’s sport manager Pere Romero said.

“He’s a mature guy who is able to play against players three years older than him but still able to do the same numbers.”

Khalaf definitely has an intriguing skill-set, especially his rebounding and shot blocking instincts. He improved greatly since his first exposure on the world scene at the U17 Worlds in Dubai.

But much of that development has come while working with Egyptian youth national teams coach Branislav Jemc. Khalaf had moved to Cairo club Gezira Sporting Club, but it was time to take things to the next level.

For many other talents from less-strong basketball countries, the choice has been to head to the United States - to either college or high school.

Chilean 1998 born Nicolas Aguirre selected the U.S. school system. Japan’s star 1998-born prospect Rui Hachimura appears set on going stateside as well despite Japan’s national team director Torsten Loibl urging him to go to Europe. Hachimura has already visited among other schools Gonzaga University - a college known for an influx of international players.

While Europe doesn’t have the school-basketball combination of the United States, European basketball provides players more practice time than teams in the United States. And many would argue that players can get better in Europe than in the United States, where colleges have strict regulations about the amount of practice time - not to mention pesky exams and other homework assignments.

By deciding on Spain, Khalaf will undoubtedly face a major adjustment, adapting to an entirely new language, culture and surroundings. Romero and the club want to help the youngster in every way possible to make it easier in the province of Barcelona.

Just as big an adjustment will come on the court as Khalaf will likely start his new basketball chapter in Manresa’s junior team. And he will be facing the best of Spain - and many other countries.

Khalaf will square off against the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid, who both bring in talented prospects from around the world. He will also have to adapt to the speed level and rhythm of the game.

“He has to adapt to all of these things. Then we can see if he can develop at this level. But we think he can do it,” Romero said.

The big news is not that Manresa signed a 16-year-old to a long-term contract - not even that the player is from another country.

The Khalaf signing is big because the talented big man is from Egypt and that he decided to go to Europe. Most of the best of Egypt’s previous generations have chosen the United States route with Anas Osama landing at the University of Louisville while Ehab Amin attending Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

That’s not to say that the United States cannot be a positive. The 23-year-old Assem Marei excelled in three seasons with NCAA II school Minnesota State-Mankato and is playing this season with Lithuanian FIBA Europe Cup team Siauliai.

One thing is certain, the talent and potential are there for Khalaf. Romero and Manresa knew others had seen Khalaf and that they needed to pounce on him now.

Manresa will give Khalaf the things he needs to excel and develop into the player that both hope he turns into. It will solely be up to Khalaf to step up and work hard to get the most out of his talent.

it’s exciting for Egyptian basketball that a team from an established league like the Liga Endesa is ready to take a chance on a player like Khalaf. It gives the next generation of young Egyptians a whole new perspective on the future.

                      David Hein

Egypt is the champion of Arab cup for national-teams

After a big final game against Morocco, Egypt got the title of the Arab National Teams Cup by beating Morocco 96-90. The half time finished with the leading of Morocco by 9 points 51-42. Egypt dominated the game in the second half due to the great effort of Omar Tarek, Ypusef Shosha and Moataz Okasha.

The arab cup was a good opportunity for Egypt to prepare for the Zone 5 qualification to FIBA Africa 2017 which will be in Cairo on 12 March 2017.

Omar Tarek (218-C-91) is the former player of USC (NCAA1) and the recent player of Gezera club in Egypt.
