Basketball: AfroBasket qualifiers - National team off to Zimbabwe today

The country’s men’s national basketball selection leave the country this afternoon for Zimbabwe to compete in the Afro-basket qualifiers.

The players received their air tickets yesterday during a small ceremony at Victoria Gymnasium where the team have been following intensive training.

Seychelles Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association (Socga) president Antonio Gopal, National Sports Council’s director for sports development and management Robert Auguste and members of the Seychelles Basketball Federation (SBF) attended the ceremony.

It was team captain Cyril Agrippine who received the tickets from Mr Gopal on behalf of his teammates and he stated that the team are prepared for the challenge that lie ahead and will do their very best to make Seychelles proud.
Mr Gopal on his part wished the team well and urged them to keep improving so as to be able to defend the gold medal in the forthcoming Indian Ocean Island Games (IOIG) in Reunion.

The team played two friendly matches. In their first game they beat men’s division one league champions Baya 85-23 with Ron Estico scoring 19 points. Baya were without their four players who are part of the national side.

The team’s second friendly match was against MBU Rockers and this time it was Dave Roseline who led them in scoring with 17 points in a 63-44 victory.

Coached by Tony Juliette and Nigel Ah-Kong, the team will meet hosts Zimbabwe, along with Angola, South Africa and Zambia in the qualifiers from February 21-28 and the team will be vying for a place at the Fiba Africa's flagship tournament in Tunisia in 2015.

The 12 players selected for the qualifiers are Abdel Sylla (Pro A side L'Elan Béarnais Pau-Lacq-Orthez), Andrew Rath (Italian Serie C side Sports club Cestistica Audace Pescia), Bernard Bristol (PLS Hawks), Cyril Agrippine, Ron Estico, Steven André (Mont Fleuri Dawgz), Timmy Adam, Amadou Sylla, Dave Roseline, Faizel Naiken (Baya), Arnaud Arrisol (Drifters) and Nigel Sinon (MBU Rockers).

Maggie Lespoire (physiotherapist), Tetyana Kozyr (doctor), Jean-Guy Alphonse (manager) and Ambrosse Kisoi (referee) will accompany the team in Zimbabwe.

Essengue to lead Cameroon in AfroBasket 2015 qualifier against Republic of Congo

YAOUNDE (AfroBasket 2015) - Gaston Essengue is expected to play a key role for Cameroon this weekend (20-22 February) when they seek to overcome the Republic of Congo and secure a place at AfroBasket 2015, which will take place in Tunisia from 19 to 30 August.

As a result of the withdrawal of the Democratic Republic of Congo and Equatorial Guinea, the two-game FIBA Africa Zone 4 Group F qualifier will take place this Friday and Sunday at the Palace Multi-purpose Sports in Yaounde.

Essengue, who plays for Argentinian side Alianza Viedma Rio Negro in Torneo Nacional de Ascenso de Básquet, has missed out a significant part of the team's preparations. However, head coach Louis Tsoungui insists he is a valuable addition to his team.

The 31-year-old power forward will be the only player in the Cameroon squad who featured at AfroBasket 2013. The other 11 players from the side that came in fifth in Abidjan two years ago remained committed to their professional clubs elsewhere.
"Any contribution from Gaston is always welcome. We hope Gas can make an impact for us, and I am happy to have him in the team," Tsoungui said to FIBA.com

Tsoungui, who replaced his countryman Lazare Adingono as the person in charge of Cameroon, knows what to expect from the Republic of Congo.

After all he coached the Republic of Congo at the continental championship in 2013.

"It is going to be difficult for us because they know my tactics and I know theirs. But I am looking forward to the challenge," he pointed out.

"They are a talented team and I know they are bringing a few players based in France.

"For us, the only problem is that some of the players will not have much training time with the team. Hopefully we can manage it and come home with a win.

"I wanted to have Frank Tchoubaye Bakala in the team as well, but he had some issues with his club in Egypt, and he can't join us."

Cameroon will face Congo with a team made up mostly of local players.

One of the locally based players that coach Tsoungui is relying on is Samuel Soup, described as a skilful swingman with enormous potential.

"He is strong, has a good game reading, and keeps getting better and better everyday."

Congo finished 14th at AfroBasket 2013 and are now looking to achieve a second consecutive appearance.

The hosts of the 2015 All-African Games have made changes of their own, appointing Frenchman Stephane Paty to coach the team.

This qualifier coincides with a visit of FIBA Africa officials who will check the progress of Cameroon hosts duties of the AfroBasket Women 2015.

Cameroon squad for AfroBasket 2015 qualifier against Republic of Congo: Seoud Njoya, Taku Sama, Charles Sibetcheu, Felix Bogmis, Chris Kuete, Steve Mbog, Naha Harding, Gaston Essenge, Michel Ipouck, Samuel Soup, Stephane Kamagou and Simon Bileg.

Angola are taking part, but their matches will only count towards All-Africa Games qualification (as they are already qualified for Afrobasket). All the other teams will be fighting for places in both competitions simultaneously.

Various news sources say Botswana will take part, but they are playing Mozambique in a separate qualifying group.
Zambia has withdrawn due to lack of funds.
Seychelles, who had originally qualified automatically due to Madagascar's withdrawal from Zone 7 qualifiers, have also been drafted in, after FIBA Africa apparently objected to a team qualifying without playing a match.

So, Angola, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Seychelles should be the men's teams participating.

              First matches today:
Zimbabwe v South Africa (women at 16:00, men at 18:00)

                              It happens only in Africa.
They did this with many of the the zones (divided them into more than one group). There are 11 groups for 7 zones (4 zones are divided into 2).

It's not clear how qualification will be decided.

Tunisia qualify as hosts, Angola as holders, and then 14 places will be decided through 11 groups (one of which, Zone 7, has been cancelled, and Seychelles moved to Zone 6). So, 14 places from 10 groups means that 2 teams will have to qualify from 4 of these groups. One of these will be Zone 5 (which had 5 teams), but there are only 2 other groups with more than 2 teams (the current group in Bulawayo and the upcoming group in Central African Republic). This means that in at least one of the 2-team groups, both teams will qualify, meaning that that qualification group is actually pointless.

I expect Senegal will be invited as a wild card even if Mali knock them out.

Angola not really being tested. I don't expect South Africa to do too much better than Seychelles or Zimbabwe.
