    Default WNBA 2014 Season

Atlanta Dream made a big move by hiring former NBA player Michael Cooper. Cooper also coached the Los Angeles Sparks who won two WNBA championships in his tenure.

    Team press release:

The WNBA Atlanta Dream today announced that former NBA player and WNBA champion coach Michael Cooper has been named Head Coach. Cooper was a five-time NBA Champion as a player with the Los Angeles Lakers, and led the Los Angeles Sparks to two WNBA titles as the team’s head coach.

Cooper is one of the most successful coaches in WNBA history, ranking second in career winning percentage (.663) and sixth in career victories (167). He is the last WNBA head coach to have led his team to back-to-back league titles, winning the 2001 and 2002 championships in Los Angeles.

Said team owners Mary Brock and Kelly Loeffler: “As we look to take the Atlanta Dream to the next level, Michael Cooper brings a caliber of coaching and leadership that is truly unique. His passion for the game, for the WNBA and his focus on player development will be invaluable. We are excited to build on the success of our franchise for our team, our fans and for the city of Atlanta, and are already working toward an exciting 2014 season.”

“We are thrilled to announce Michael Cooper as our new head coach,” said Dream CEO Ashley Preisinger. “We had an outstanding pool of candidates to consider for the position, and we are excited for Michael to lead our team. He is a proven winner and leader with a track record of success at the highest levels of basketball and we believe he will be a tremendous asset to our team.”

“I’m very honored and pleased to be named the head coach of the Dream,” said Cooper. “It’s a great organization, and the leadership has it headed in the right direction. The team’s appearance in the WNBA Finals shows they are on the right track. They’ve been knocking on the door of a championship, and I know what that felt like in my early years with the Sparks, but now it’s time to kick the door in and make it happen.”

It seems that the Golden State Warriors ownership group plans to take over the Los Angeles Sparks franchise with the latter ceasing operations.

WNBA Board and Players Association agreed on a new CBA, allowing teams to increase their rosters to 12 (finally!) and, among others, providing incentives for players to spend less than three months playing overseas.

Atlanta Dream signed French floor general Céline Dumerc to a multi-year contract. After her heroics at the Olympics, Dumerc was named 2012 European PoY.

After signing French star Sandrine Gruda and veteran Armintie Harrington, Los Angeles Sparks have added Candice Wiggins to their roster.

2014 Draft will be held April 14.

Very interesting battle for the #1 pick, probable top five being (in alphabetical order):
Stefanie Dolson (had an xcellent final tournament)
    Kayla McBride (as above)
Chiney Ogwumike (Top-10 in points, rebounds and FG%)
    Odyssey Sims (National top-scorer)
    Alyssa Thomas (xcellent full season)

Not comparable to the hype surrounding the 2013 top-three drafts, but 2014 shows more depth on standout players.

Among other possible #1 round picks:
    Bria Hartley
    Natasha Howard
    Jordan Hooper
    Tricia Liston
    Maggie Lucas
    Astou N'Dour (Spain) ?
    Shoni Schimmel
    Meighan Simmons

Canadian Natalie Achonwa, very likely a #1 round pick, could drop out being injured and unavailable this season.
Another potential #1 round, G Chelsea Gray also injured early this year.
Not sure about who else could be picked from outside USA, but someone will maybe enter the draft.

    Chiney Ogwumike, Stanford, Forward
    Shoni Schimmel, Louisville, Guard
    Meighan Simmons, Tennessee, Guard

Quite complex move by Sun. They traded former MVP Tina Charles to NYL, obtaining 1st round pick Alyssa Thomas, 2nd-year center Kelsey Bone (who has recently won the EuroLeague with Galatasaray of Turkey) and the 1st round selection of 2015. Besides Ogwumike, Sun chose guard Chelsea Gray (likely to play in the 2015 season) and fw DeNesha Stallworth.
In another trade, Mystics sent their top Fw Crystal Langhorne to Seattle Storm for 1st round pick Bria Hartley and 2nd year fw Tianna Hawkins.
Two young Aussies among the drafted, Carley Mijovic and Stephanie Talbot and Ukrainan Inga Orekhova of South Florida, a surprisingly high pick.
Among the undrafted, Haley Peters, Jasmine Lister, Aaryn Ellenberg, Katherine Plouffe, Karla Gilbert, Artemis Spanou, Samarie Walker.

Looks like Sun #1 round draft Chelsea Gray might play at some point during the 2014 season.
